Has a game (if any) actually offended you?

I don't think so no, but I've been offended by reactions to games, like the fact that the medium is nearly (or well over, depending on your point of view) 40 years old and almost any sign of a fully exposed human body in the main stream titles (Outside of God of War oddly) is still blown into (insert not-so-clever porno title here): the game. And to the guy/girl about to name out Japanese porn titles, a game which is not released outside of a single country is not main stream.

Surprisingly enough the gore on Fallout 3. I know it's kind of an odd choice but it just stuck with me for some reason. The fact that it's unrealistic and seems more there to be cool I guess. I mean, when do you ever blow someone to smithereens by shooting them in the arm or leg? Killing dogs, especially via slo-mo cartwheeling decapitations, makes me sad :( . That being said, I'm currently bidding on it for my PC...

I suppose you can say I was a bit wierded out by the "No Russian" level of MW2. And I am not a hater of the game, I play quite a bit of it online. It was probably the realism of the situation and of the people. It was uncomfortable seeing people crawl for their lives in fear like that. Its strange, because I enjoy mass murdering people in crackdown and prototype. However, I am pretty sure it is the realism of the situation in No Russian that makes me so uncomfortable. I really do not believe they should have added the level in the game, even though skipping it is an option.

The closest thing to offending me in a game (And I say closest, because I found this more awesome than offending):

Jabbing Poseidon's eyes out in second person.

There was one game made by some white power type people where you go around gunning people down in the ghetto. I was pretty offended at that for never even playing it. Who plays that kind of crap? I mean normal people wise, who plays?

A previous topic kind of got me thinking; has a game offended you? I Don't mean foul language but the subject matter or the way it was conveyed? I can say pretty honestly that I have played video games for around 18 years now and only one game has struck me as ''nah, that isn't right''

That game is the XBLA Toy Soldiers.

Now at first glance the game seems harmless, it's a bunch of toys on a table top in a classic towers defense game. but after playing for a few minutes, it dawned on me that the game was hiding its true content beind a playful name.

If you zoom in on individual 'toys' you see sa expressions as they walk into machinegun fire, while the gunners laugh and smile, the same when mustard gas is released, the gunners are laughing and slapping their thighs! All the while the enemy 'toys' walk slowly to their deaths, which are portrayed just as realistically as any death in COD.

I wasn't sure what offended me, I have played game where you shoot civillians, gun down animals etc and have never been offended. It dawned on me that it was because the game makers were making fun/light of the war. All shooters dealing with real events (D-Day etc) try to show the events realistically but with respect. It was blatently obvious that this game was accurately portraying the slaughter of WW1 but poking fun at it. They tried to disguise this fact by simply caling the game 'toy soldiers' when infact it had nothign to do with toys apart from the odd boss. The vast majority of the game comprises of you gunning down and gassing hundreds of soldiers who crawl around on the floor dying and choking, while your troops roll about laughing their asses off.

So games like GTA, Soldier of Fortune, manhunt etc never offended me in the least, it was eithre over the top comicbook violence or showed real events in a respectful way.

Has any game offended you either by suprise or just in general?
I found Toy Soldiers affect me in quite a profound way too, but I'm not sure whether I was full blown offended by it...

I felt that it portrayed the horror and senselessness of World War 1 quite well, perhaps too well in fact, and I find that I can only manage a few levels at a time before I'm overcome with the feeling of senseless waste and get a bit depressed.

I'm not sure that I agree with you that it's poking fun at World War 1, but after playing I realised that any game that makes entertainment out of that war can be in dubious taste, even if the soldiers are only tin toys which explode into gears and cogs.

The reason the soldiers are based on the old toy soldiers, I think is because that's the only way on earth they would have ever got approval to release that game on X-Box Live... it would have been too horrific to make that game with the soldiers being real instead of toys.
I think the developers had the idea to make a World War 1 trench defence game first, then made them toys when they realised that was the only possible way to approach the subject, by tying it in with the old toy soldier that boys used to play with before video games.

I think the reason slaughtering hundreds of virtual soldiers in this game is far worse than in other games is that, in other games it's quite funny to laugh at the dumb A.I. and it's poor path-finding, which sends wave after wave of grunts into your machine gun fire, but when you're doing it in this game it's not so funny if you realise that's what actually happened in real life.

The generals were the dumb A.I. and the brave soldiers were the lobotomised grunts with atrocious path-finding abilities, who were ordered to walk at machine guns or be executed for cowardice.

Hentai games in general tend to do that, the worst by far being anything made by the people who made Bible Black and Discipline. Those games are just sick.

And I mean in a "cry naked in the shower like that scene from The Crying Game" sick.
Heh. Good to know. *looks for better hentai games.*
You don't know the half of it. If I could describe even a small *fraction* of what happens in either game, I could earn myself mod wrath. It is THAT bad

The games are practically a laundry list of most every depraved sexual act ever conceived or committed by humankind, and I qualify the "most" because I never played long enough to confirm if it does in fact include every depraved sexual act known to man.

Brutal Legend. The fact that the first real metal game they released, the put that fat fuck Jack Black as basically the hero of metal.
Whoever thought of that should be lined up against a wall and shot in the face 7 times.

Probably the same with games where you have to kill dogs. I love dogs more than people and if I ever encountered a dog in a game that you needed to kill I would simply run and run until I got to the next checkpoint etc

...but yeah COD5 kinda stopped that for me...stabby stabby!

Kingdom Hearts offends me. Fucking Disney. TAINTING A PERFECTLY GOOD RPG SERIES WITH IT'S KIDDIE BULLSHIT.
You just made yourself a powerful enemy... *glare* No offense, but I cant stand people who say Dinsey ruins it; it adds a refreshing quality to the games. If your sence of macho can't get over it, so be. But appealing to kids =/= kiddie.

On topic, it never effected me, but I remember the time a family member walked by as I chainsawed a Locust in Gears of War; then proceded to vomit.

AND HOW COULD I FORGET. Modern Warfare; the level where you crawled around as a soldier, dying from a Nuke. I thought that was disrespectful and wrong. Also, in MW2; No Russian. Lets be honest, they didnt NEED that part in the game as a playable part. It was just sold to rake in money off of shock

Modern Warfare 2.

It offended me that they thought I might be offended by "No Russian".

Well thats the most shocking thing I have read this year so far ...

Also kind of weird how your profile pic looks like your avatar pic. Kind of surreal 30 seconds I just had.

On topic. I have never been offended by a game/film/book etc ever.

I think your example is more in bad taste than actually offensive, to me anyway.
