Ah, yes, I had this right in mind right as I was reading the topic. I wasn't sure how exactly to say it without coming across to someone as silly, but that's pretty much my thoughts right there.

There's a clear upgrade to villainry that starts in "Best Wishes".
Yeah they're actually competent. I mean, there must have been a reason why they never got fired from TR all these years of sucking
Except Meowth
. They are actually decent criminals. They are doing actual criminal things.

Did the universe just implode or something?

Most likely. Many things suck, or at least arent as good as once thought, when you remove the view of nostalgia.

Though I think the original series going through Kanto was probably the best, and still holds up well enough.

...

and personally I think the Orange Isles ones are good too.

The anime is clearly overrated, but I can get a few laughs out of it. Sure it's not high class and any character growth and trainer experience is set to 0 once there's a new season starting, but if you can look away from that it's decent.

Yeah I gotta say Team Rocket has become a hell of a lot more badass in the new season.

Thats something the writers actually did right, now if only they can make Ash more intelligent since this season hes fighting like a rookie

I haven't seen the show for around eight months now, but in the last year I watched it (at least), it was awful. Never any Pokemon battles, always Team Rocket blasting themselves off into the sky while Ash and the gang would help random strangers. So boring. I'm fairly certain that the first three seasons of the show were fantastic, according to my memory. Though that might be a bit biased.

Pokemon has always been AWESOME in my opinion. Along with Mario, Zelda, Kirby, and everything else by Nintendo.

I do think that they focus too much on adding new Pokemon instead of new game mechanics. Still, they're continuously pretty solid jRPGs. Certainly more solid than the direction Final Fantasy has gone, Pokemon is giving you more options(slowly but surely), while Final Fantasy is giving you less.

Edit: Oh, you're talking about the anime. Eh, the humor is still much the same. Though it's pretty stupid that Satoshi/Ash is still considered the same age as when he started. They can keep him young looking or whatever, but when you're 10 years old for over 10 years, it's ridiculous. It's not like the creators have to shrink his eyes, make him super tall, and give him a beard. Just stop calling him 10 years old. And let him actually mature a little bit mentally.
I lol'd at your edit. You've really gotta read the topic first dummy :p

OT: I remember thinking it was the shit way back in the day, but it's painful to watch now. I still think the movie with Mewtwo is decent though.

I watched it quite often as a little kid, but later I realized that it was quite lame (Always the same, repeating structures, when one can see through this as a kid, it's pretty darn shameful for the creators) and... yes, that's about it.
Haven't watched it seriously since then.

Hey, she only needs to splash around like that for another thirty hours or so to turn into Gyrados.

But seriously, yes, it was pretty crap.

I wouldn't call the anime crap. Cheesy? Yep. Cheesy can be good, and so was Pokemon in it's early years. It was a commercial product of a franchise that brought a little something (much like Digimon, though Digimon I believe hid it more). Though it did go downhil pretty fast, and now whenever I can hear the whole "I'm gonna be a Pokemon Master" from Ash with a straight face all I can do is facepalm.

I showed my little cousin the original Pokemon and he laughed at how terribly corny it is.

Yes, it's laughable even for an eight year old with ADHD.

I loved the first season because it was kind of tongue-in-cheek and self-aware of it's goofy premise. The later Pokémon episodes seem more to focus on cuteness and drama, lacking the great humor of the first season.

Also: The 'Ash meets a new girl and blows up her bike' thing is really worn out... Did they actually do it with the new girl?

I have to say this: The Japanese original is way better then the English dub.
Actually Ash tried to catch the girl with a poke'ball. -_- Another one of those rookie mistakes I was talking about.

I think the problem with that Anime is that it's made to go on and on, as long as people watch it. If you look at the old Pokemon episodes, it seems like it actually had an overarching plot, character development, etc. They had actually a goal where they wanted to go to with the Anime.
That goal has long since disappeared. Most Animes have an ending, a conclusion at some point. Pokemon however has mutated to something that's never going to, if it has enough viewers. All the episodes, characters, the plot, everything is made to never really develop. For example, Ash is still ten, even though he should be about my age now.
It's kinda sad, it will never really have a true ending. The last episode will be aired when, whoever finances this, decides that it's not worth it anymore.

OP is asking about the tv show, not the games.

On Topic: Maybe it's just the nostalgia talking, but I remember the first season not being so bad.

That's how it is in the latest US episode.
A criminal job went very wrong apparently and Meowth was to blame and subsequently got fired. Jesse and James left Meowth behind. I don't think this is permanent as the episode these events are revealed there's a strong 'good friends make up in the end' morale message. Besides could be a very clever rouse by Team Rocket to steal Pikachu by using Meowth's sense of over-dramatisation and the Twerps blind good nature. Is funny though in the episode. Ash sends Snivey out to do a thing and instantly attacks Meowth with vinewhip because Snivey thought Meowth was the enemy. <3 Snivey's character.

But yeah, Pikachu is suspicious. I highly doubt Meowth would switch sides perminantly so... abruptly in terms of continuous narrative.

<3 Snivey.
