From what I have seen in this forum, and in the world around me, hating the Halo series (Or one of the games in particular) has become the new cool thing to do. Whenever someone mentions that it might actually be good, they have to include an add-on like "Yeah, I went there" or "I guess I'll be that guy".

It seems like people just insult Halo just so they can say "I insulted Halo".

Has anyone else noticed this?

It's not new.
Yeah, people noticed this trend and by now there is a similar number of people hating Halo as people trying to protect it.

I don't care either way, to be honest.
Halo (the first game) was boring, uninspired and average in every way possible.
I don't have an opinion on any other installments of the series, though, since I didn't play them.

no.
It's because people around here have played many games. it's not a trend.
that would make people stupid if they followed a trend just to say something to be the 'Coolz'.
It's called opinions. many people on this site are prepared to share them.

It may not be new, but why is it happening?
often because we don't like series milking it or more general we have a reason to dislike it though it varies from person to person

EDIT: it seems I am getting a lot of hate for this post I apologize for calling unnecessary sequels milking it, NOW STOP QUOTING ME ON IT!

True.
Thank you by the way for not being a forum elitist and yelling "There isn't an amazing discussion here!!! You are a troll!!!".

Made a little EDIT to my first post.

Why is it happening? Well, if I had played any of the other parts of the series, I might be able to tell you.
However, from what I have gathered, the "haters" got annoyed with fans constantly proclaiming their love for the games and began to spite those fans.

Or it might be because "mainstream gamers" like Halo and people want to be edgy, I dunno.

It might also be that the other parts of the series are just as average as the first one and that that's why some people hate it. But as I said, I can't really say anything about those later games in the series.

So scratch what I said as it's not really fair towards Halo 2, 3 and whatnot (a buddy of mine said Halo 2 was awesome in comparison to Halo 1, for example).

Don't mention it, you weren't trolling you were pondering big difference :p also I'm not one of the elitists or anything, not my style, especially for things like punctuation I often ignore it too... >.> And as for this altogether it has discussion value so don't expect much negative feedback just opinions. you will learn to love us. ^^

Your "Getting annoyed with fans point" is very true since I think Halo was the first game (series) for fans to go "OMG!!!! YOUR GAME SUCKS!!! MY GAME RULEZ!!!!!" and make total idiots of themselves.

P.S. BTW H2 and H3 are way better than 1.

To be completely honest, most of the Halo-haters I've talked with are simply bleating sheep. Our society has conditioned us to go against what is popular, what is accepted: thus, as soon as something gains status, a lot of people will start hating it just because of that. It happens in everything, from movies to music to games. I personally can't stand self-righteous people who somehow think they're better than everyone else just because they "go against the flow." If Halo is a good game, it's a good game, no matter how many people like it, how overhyped it is, or how stupid many of the fans may be. Get over yourselves and judge the game, not its status.

And yes, I know I made a generalization. I've found that to be the rule; don't be offended if you are one of the exceptions to it.

i think its probably because better games have come out since halo and now that its not the best FPS out people think its bad. people will do the same thing to CoD when better things come out.

i think also that hating halo has become pretty mainstream on the internet

I played Halo 1 and 2 solo, co-op, multiplayer on hard and legendary all the way through many times (friends wanted to play) and I have been through it many times and I just don't like the game.

The enemies mostly bugged me, wearing brightly colored armor, the midgets screaming and saying cheesy lines as you gun them down felt like mowing down the Muppets.

I don't personally like it, but I'll play it if someone wants to, and I'm not going to knock someone for enjoying it. If you like that's cool, whatever ya like.

Because its trendy to hate something thats popular. Even if it is shit (or even if it is good) Halo is very popular and so makes a great target for people to hate, and i'm sure it makes people feel superior if they don't agree with the masses.

Bandwagons happen.

SMOKING IS COOL
DRUGS ARE COOL
HALO SUCKS COCK
LINKIN PARK RULES
LINKIN PARK SUCKS

People see something popular and start to like it because it's popular (and because they're shallow dicks.)
Then people see those people and start going "You know what? Fuck you, I'm going home. And FUCK YOUR SHITTY [X] TOO!"
And then people see those people and think "Holy shit they're sooooo cool and subversive! RAWWWWWKKKK"

And then people who genuinely like/hate something are lumped in with those other fucks.

This is exactly how it happens.

EDIT: And for the record, yes, I rank Halo up there as one of the worst games I've ever played <---(this part is important you guys)
Couldn´t agree more. and btw, congrats on the 15000 posts :)

I still rank Halo 2 multiplayer as the single most enjoyable thing I have ever experienced in gaming. I played that shit for 3 years straight, every single day, and still loved every second of it.

Like many have said, Halo is seen as "average" to a whole lot of people, and that's totally fine. What isn't fine is hating anything just because it's mainstream or popular. I would compare it to fans complaining that a band has "sold out" because they have a song played on the radio or whatever. They're just hating it because it's popular.

Well people always reject things that appear to popular. I've seen lots of people hate the Final Fantasy games. Either everyone just has horrible taste or they're just tired of the series being dragged on this long.
This can be noticed with Halo since I preferred the first game to the others.

Whatever you may think of Halo, I think it's undeniable that it's the first console fps to actually be acceptable. Everybody liked Goldeneye back in the day, but go back and play it now and it's nearly unplayable. If you were a console gamer, there's no way you can deny the fantastic contributions halo made to the genre on consoles. It's the first one that garnered any sort of popularity where you didn't feel like you were fighting the control scheme the entire time.

That being said, it is the target of a great deal of hate. Some will even say it's "suxorz werst game i evar palyd". I think at least a few of those people have already commented on this thread.

A lot of people dislike the original for one of three reasons:
a) They played it after other games which improved on its formula came out, and correctly judged it as inferior to the new and improved games. This isn't fair, of course. It'd be like criticizing the original pac man's graphics. But they do it anyway.
b) They played good fps's on the computer. fps's will always be better with a mouse, and so a decent console fps just isn't as good as a good computer fps. Is the fact that it was "good for a console shooter" a proper defense? I think so, because more people play consoles than pc. The fact that there were better pc shooters before it is completely immaterial.
c) They had a ps2 or gamecube and were unable to get an xbox. Thus, they had to "hate" it to justify the fact that they couldn't play this exceptional (for the time) game. This is understandable at the time, but if you're old enough to have had a system during that time, you need to grow up and forget your childhood coping mechanisms.

Those who didn't fall into one of these three groups probably hate because of the reason mentioned by others already. They make themselves feel better by criticizing that which is popular. By doing this, they feel they differentiate themselves from the "sheep".
