Because people think it's cool to hate something that has alot of fans and is popular
and i also think Yahtzee clones may have a say in this too, but i also think it's down to someone saying it's crap or they hate it just cause they support say, call of duty or half-life. they think these games are better (fair deuce) but they also feel the need to call everything else absolute poo because of it.

[edit]: And as a great man once said: if you really enjoyed a game then they shouldn't get to you (unless of course theirs a despicable little niggling doubt in the back of your mind...) And incidentally i love all three of halo, cod and HL

Ironically, Halo is one of the huge franchises that hasn't been milked to death.

Halo hate is the new thing. People think they're cool to hate Halo, regardless of how good it actually was.

Haters are more stupid than fanboys, in my opinion: at least the fanboys are optimistic.

The reason I don't really hold Halo in that high regards is that is that it was (at least around where I live) praised for all it's glory and fair enough, when you started it the first time it was pretty fucking sweet. The opening level was cool and it really set the tone when you crashed down in the ring and all. But then it kind of got turned down a notch and got stuck there for the rest of the game.

The second one was kind of still stuck there I thought and I never got around to finnish it. Multiplayer was fun though I'll admit that, but not really all that better than much else.

But I have to say I don't really get what was so revolutionizing about it though tbh. It was all right, pretty good multiplayer but as far as I was concerned.

I just don't like Halo. Why do you think I'm doing it to be cool? Do you only hate Nazis because it's cool?

Many find that Halo is inexplicably popular, and most people denounce Halo because they are taken aback and confused when they hear all of the praise and hype surrounding Halo, only to play it and realize that it's nothing special.

It's not because it's cool to hate Halo. It's because it's jarring to people like myself why the game is so popular. Unfortunately, people who post threads to ask this question often don't realize it's already been brought up about a thousand times on the Escapist alone.

Look, the tradition of liking halo to a religious degree was far more annoying than the fanatic hatred of halo. I know that there are those who hate halo because it seems like a popular thing. But I would rather that than people defending the structure of halo's hollow repetitive gameplay. In addition, I am so bored with halo fans been annoyed that the anti-theists to their totem of worship are almost as fanatical as they are that it is starting to look like they are saying "IT IS ONLY GOOD WHEN WE DO IT!"

It's neither new nor cool. It's all based on opinions.

Speaking of which, has anyone else noticed the absense of _oo_oo_?

From what I have seen in this forum, and in the world around me, hating the Halo series (Or one of the games in particular) has become the new cool thing to do. Whenever someone mentions that it might actually be good, they have to include an add-on like "Yeah, I went there" or "I guess I'll be that guy".

It seems like people just insult Halo just so they can say "I insulted Halo".

Has anyone else noticed this?
Don't make Halo threads!!!
OT: Yes it does happen quite a bit but the series is also very very very hyped which means that hate is bound to follow as you have those over zealous fans taht worship it more than God.

You'd be amazed about the amount of people who haven't, and act surprised when they find someone else (out of the 200 other people saying the exact same thing on the thread) about how they've finally found somebody else who hates Halo.

It's an opinion that I don't even take seriously anymore. It's a very good barometer of who is and who is not driven by groupthink.

This is another thing- I have never actually seen this "Halo fans worship it more than God" nonsense that everybody keeps alluding to. It's an excuse for being a dick to people on the internet that other people have picked up and keep repeating, but it has never actually matched reality.

Personally, I never saw what was so great about any of them... I even asked someone why they were the "best games ever" one day and he said all these things it had in it... well, everything he said was done in Quake way before it was in Halo...

Meh...I've felt ambivalent about the Halo series from the very beginning. Just found them a bit boring and average. Just my opinion, of course, but I wouldn't say I "hate" them. I find the hype and stuff surrounding it really annoying, but I mostly ignore it.

It's all about opinion. I enjoy the Halo games, but it is a really overrated series.
I'll second that, I own 1, 2 and 3 but would never seriously put much effort into defending them as, while fun, they are nothing particularly special when compared to some other titles out there (but they are FAR from bad).

The irony being that compared to a certain gaming company beginning with N and ending with 'intendo the Halo universe has barely been milked at all.
For example everyones favourite plumber has appeared in over 200 games acording to Wiki when combined with the content of some of those games that's more like sheer outright rape rather then milking.

Utter bullshit, regeneration ruined nothing. Picking up medic packs every 5 feet has had its day, it naturally progressed onto a different style after being the basic fps method for a good long time. Even the first game stuck with the tried and tested health bar.

Yes, we hate the franchise that brough intelligent FPS AI and halfway decent vehicle use to the console market with it's first title. A second title that introduced online play to the console community (I can't think of a sucessful online console FPS before halo2), as well as a third title that took a unique approach with 'the forge' so as to try and best suit it's user bases demands. Even the terrible RTS was attempting something new for the console market, the only title that even remotely seems like a cash in is the ODST, which is supposed to be an expansion. It has nothing to do with the game that microsoft deciding to try and sell it as a full game. Every single halo title has attempted something new and innovative, people accusing bungie of milking the franchise are clearly clueless (fine, pushing that much out of game material from the universe may be milking it a little, but there's adequate demand for all the books, animes etc).

These same people then go on about how much they love half life 2 (and it's various episodes) or recent games from the call of duty cashcow, the hypocrisy is very unsettling .

The truth is that of the few people who actually have the intelligence to muster up their own opinion of a game (note this is a seperate entity from its community) nearly always have a blind hatred of anything that draws gaming away from the PC platform, as they are nearly always PC elitists. A smaller, more educated portion of the halo haters (obviously not the legions of sheep) hate it because of how agressively and effectively it was marketed, there's no doubt that halo:ce would have been a flop without microsoft pushing it, and some people hate it for that.

And then I suppose there are a portion of posers within the gaming community who feel better (a sort of snobiness) if they reject anything popular, kind of like how everyone hated greenday after they sold out.

In all fairness the first ones health system made logical sense, given you had a shield and regular health, and you were in power armour and genetically enhanced. However in Halo 2 and 3, that shield was your only health and for some reason, MC could only take one shot after the shield went down before he collapsed, heck I'm pretty sure the marines could take more punishment than that.

Selling out is never good in all fairness, it's like Metallica with Justice and backwards their stuff was great, after justice they cut their hair and tryed to appeal to the mainstream they sort of went down the drain, eventually reaching an all time low with St Anger, which I shall never mention again if I can. Fans of a band are perfectly entitled to get annoyed if they sell out, especially metal bands, as by their very nature they are "underground" changing your style to the point where it's mainstream, purely to roll in more cash and to hell with the genuine fans is a bit of a dick move.

I know you said green day, but this is an easier analogy for me to make, given I've never really been a fan of green day.

Although I dont really see how people can say they milked it, 4 games is hardly milking it.
