Have you ever bought two copies of the same game on multiple platforms?

So, i was playing through Deus Ex: Human Revolution for the first time today on my xbox. While i am certainly having fun with it, i'm having a nagging feeling in the back of my head that i should've got it for PC. There were a couple of reasons why i didn't - being an achievement nut, i wanted DE 1k'd on my card, and my graphics cards (295GTX in SLI) aren't capable of Direct X 11, which is something a lot of PC games are moving towards now and i figured i'd get a less than optimal experience anyway.

I stopped playing and i got to thinking; what if i simply purchased the game again over steam to play on the PC? Partly because i'm sure the graphics and overall performance would be significantly enhanced, partly because i prefer aiming with a mouse, but also because on my current run through on the xbox i'm having to go for this borderline perfect pacifist no alarm hard mode run, which is really restricting my experience in some places. The copy on PC would be the "dick around" copy, if you know what i mean. Use whatever gear i want, let myself suffer consequences as they come (if plot specific characters die for example, just carry on instead of reloading)

I've actually bought multiple copies before. I've done it for Arkham Asylum, Call of Duty, Fallout, Oblivion and a few others. While i do enjoy playing them on either the PC or xbox / ps3 respectively and feel they offer comparatively different experiences, i do get a niggling feeling in the back of my head that i'm sort of squandering money by being indecisive about what platform i want to play on. Generally, i only purchase multiple copies for games i'm truly impressed by or enjoy enough to play through again without giving it a month or so.

I was just wondering the escapist's opinion on this weird little habit of mine. Do you think it's wasteful? Also, do any of you also purchase the same game on multiple platforms like me?

All the games I had for my 360 I got again for my PC.

I moved over to full time PC gaming so had to redo my entire collection.

Yup. Bought Borderlands, Fallout 3, Oblivion, Far Cry 2, both Left 4 Deads, and Bioshock for both my Xbox 360 and PC. Well I bought the 360 ones first then the PC versions once I built my new computer. I got them cheap on my PC though thanks to Steam sales.

I own 3 copies of Ocarina of Time on different consoles, but that is really the only case of me buying more than one copy of a game. I don't even download VC games that I already own. Also, did the Deus Ex game not come with an onlive passcode? Is that only for the PC version?

What's an onlive passcode? I got a code for the Explosive Mission Pack, if that's what you mean. And a code to register that copy of Deus Ex if you're a Square Enix member.

Thanks to Steam, yes on many, many different titles. Like Oblivion, Borderlands, Team Fortress 2, Plants vs. Zombies, Portal, Assassin's Creed 2, Braid, all the Grand Thefts, Max Paynes, and Bully, etc...

Onlive is a cloud based distribution service that you can buy games with. I think Deus Ex: HR came with a code to get a free version of the game on onlive, that way you can play it on your PC without being forced to buy another copy (the reason I know about this is that there was this big scandal with Gamestop taking out all the onlive game codes because they are the competition; look it up).

Not in a long time since I was royally buttfucked by Fallout 3 GOTY for PC.

The computer didn´t recognize the program, just the files, it crashed every 2-3 minutes and it was a pain in the ass to unistall, because deleting the "program" didn´t delete all the files.
Ironically, I´m thinking about buying Fallout New Vegas GOTY if it comes, but if the same think happends again, there won´t be a Bethesda/Obsidian building intact to the end of the month.

Ahh, if that was the case then i wouldn't have that code anyway - i'm a UK resident and we don't have Gamestop here. As far as i'm aware, Europe generally isn't included in that type of thing. For a moment there you had me pretty excited!

I only have the money to buy the game once, so no, I don't rebuy games. I can't. And I wouldn't want to. I don't understand why I would want two copies of basically the same game, even if they are on different platforms.

Just seems like a waste of precious money. Money I don't have, never have had, and probably never will have to spare.

But hey, if that floats your boat, then by all means go for it.

Sorry, glad I could help. The PAL regions always seem like they tend to get srewed over more often...but you do get Skyward Sword 2 days early, so I guess that makes up for it.

Generally I rebuy games on other platforms that play differently, back in the good old days pc and console games were almost completely different games due to engine restrictions meaning it was fun to try both versions.

I dont think Portal 2 counts because i bought the PS3 version which came with the redeem code for a free Steam version.

I did get Borderlands a few hours ago on that awesome 75% off deal though.

Sort of.

I had Prince of Persia: The sands of Time for Gamecube, then I bought The Prince of Persia Trilogy for PS3.

I also had Tomb Raider Legend for PS2, then bought the Trilogy for PS3.
