To be honest, he's a tad late with the advice, given we've been transmitting radio and TV signals for 50+ years.

If they are as advanced as Hawking hints then why would they give a shit about us? There is a reason Italy doesn't invade San Marino. At a certain point we are just so small that we aren't worth the time.
The same reason why colonial empires like Rome and Britain have historically conquered what they considered "savage" nations.

Raw resources, and a good environment, not to mention potential "lesser" sentient beings for use as slaves, technological alliances, trade, commerce, and the military advantage of a self-preserving outpost.

I'm watching, "Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking," right now. Oddly enough, it's the episode where he discusses this very subject. It's fascinating.

Look up the 'WOW' signal. It will blow your mind!

Personally I just don't see something like this happening. To me, it seems like maintaining an entire fleet of ships capable of housing your whole species and having it fly across the galaxy would require an unimaginable amount of resources. I think ti would get to the point where raiding a foreign planet for resources wouldn't be cost effective. If they have the resources to maintain such a flotilla, then I don't think they would need to take over garden worlds. They obviously have an incredibly efficient method for using resources.

I dunno, it just seems somewhat implausible that all of the resources on Earth are worth flying across the galaxy for. It's not like Christopher Columbus traveling across the ocean. It seemed absurd in his time, but with their technology it was still feasible. Crossing across the whole galaxy would require unimaginable future technology. If they have that tech, then I imagine they would also have created a reliable method for gather resources.

Man if only Hawking wasn't wheelchair-bound. Then we could just let the 'Gordon Freeman' effect take its course.

- theoretical physicist --- dues # 1 --- check

- never speaks --- at least not with his voicebox --- check

- can wield a crowbar --- damn....

We're just 1/3 away from meeting the criteria to save our species...
QUICK! Someone tell Hawking to work on a way to cure his own atrophy!

Then get the rest of the world's scientists on it! Screw climate change; he'd solve it FOR us. One Combine soldier at a time.

Just kidding, but you're scarily right about how similar he is to Freeman.

I wonder why when the subject of alien contact comes up, that everyone silently assumes that aliens will be more advanced that us, and that they will be the one's finding us.
What if we are ahead of the game? Would an alien life form even wish to be found by us?
coz we wont see other planets until we invent FTL travel. that wont happen while you and i are alive.
only possiblity for us to see aliens is that they come to us.

If a hyper advanced people can't find an uninhabited planet to mine those resources from without having to deal with invading a planet full of sapient beings then they probably aren't advanced enough to escape their own solar system. It might not take them forever to get rid of us pesky humans but it would still be cheaper and easier and faster to just ignore us and move on.

The title of the story is a bit silly "Hawking Warns Humanity to Avoid Dangerous Aliens"

Some type of planetary defense would be nice before we started broadcasting where we are.
totally agree on the whole planetary defense system idea

but what makes us think that they will even reply to the signal let alone deem us worthy of contact

No way! Aliens are awesome! Were going to have a federation set up to explore space, meet new lifeforms, and boldly go where no man has gone before. There are going to be starships, and captains, and aliens who look human that rely solely on logic. Its going to be awesome.

Hawking is a god.

In his lifetime he's had an affair with his nurse, solved the mysteries of Time, appeared in the Simpsons and Futurama ripping into himself, had a fight over the Higgs Boson, and is now telling NASA to shut the hell up.

This is while he only has limited muscle movement in his face.

If he had full mobility, Chuck Norris would be running.
OMG! Scariest avatar ever! The new ep with the Weeping Angels has some crazy nightmare fuel! *shivers

OT: If alien races are anything like they are in Doctor Who (and since we have no Doctor to defend us), we should probably be afraid... very afraid...

On a more serious note, humanity hasn't learned it's own lesson with each other. We can barely stomach other cultures in the same country that look the slightest bit different. (Also Anti-Semitism is on the rise again, not that it ever really went away.) I agree with Hawking. Aliens = Bad news

I don't agree. Aliens may not like us. But why would they want to colonize OUR planet? If they already are space-faring, wouldn't that have set up colonies on other planets, somewhere nearby their original planet? That would solve their resource problems. Plus, The Earth is already be depleted pretty rapidly, I can't think there'd be much the aliens would want on our planet.

They may destroy us, but they aren't gonna bother trying to colonize the planet.

I fully agree with Steven Hawking on this one. Sure, they could be friendly like the Vulcans from Star Trek, but there's an equal chance that they'd resemble Lovecraftian horrors more than anything, and even if they aren't as bad as that, they could be fascist, manipulative dicks like the Vorlons from Babylon 5. And even the Vulcans (other than Spock) were dickish a lot of the time. Bottom line: it's just not worth the risk.

EDIT: Corrected errors. I can't speel.

well, while im all in favor of discovering new life and learning about an entirely different species, I also have played enough Halo too know that Space is filled with assholes who want to blow up the universe with a bunch of rings. I say we wait till we can develop super soldiers named after an Ancient Greek city state before we sound the space-matter horn.

He's got a point. Maybe we should shut down that Arecebo Dish in Puerto Rico. You know, the big mammoth dish that was used in the movie, Golden Eye. Anyway it waits for signals from outer space but we're not really technologically prepared if there was an invasion. We barely understand space travel now.

Then again, maybe it could be like XCOM: UFO Defense and we'd steal the aliens technology. (I think the tv series Robotech/Macross followed along these same lines).

Its stuff like this that makes me think half life will soon become a reality, ready your crowbars every one.
