Not letting Hollywood get hold of it is a good start, but definitely don't let Uwe Boll get anywhere near it.

I have a suggestion for Bioware on this. Let Ronald Moore (Battlestar Galactica) write it. Then it really will be the first truly excellent video game movie.

Probably turn out similar to the star trek movie that came out last year. If made I some how just don't see it being profitable.

Wait, I'm not done being ticked off. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to start an email campaign or something. Surely Bioware would put a stop to this... if money hungry EA wasn't their new lord and master.

Alright, now let's break down a few (a very small percentage) of the reasons this won't work.

Shepard's character is malleable and personalized to the player. No writer can show every aspect of that without making the him seem insane.

The universe of Mass Effect takes pages and pages, hours and hours to create and flesh out. You can't do that within the time frame of a movie.

Ensemble Cast is a vital part of Mass Effect, something Hollywood routinely screws up. Sure, Seth Green can actually play Joker. But if you screw up or marginalize even one character, you destroy the story. For instance, you make Halle Barry Storm in the Xmen. Or in Mass Effect, you make Meagan Fox into Ashley Williams. Same problem. She's a celebrity, she's popular right now. Cram her in anywhere she fits. Damn you and your committee-based casting Hollywood!

Effects. The SFX in Mass Effect, done right, would cost more than Avatar. Your alternative is atmosphere destroying cheap CGI.

Racism. Racism is a very real part of Mass Effect, but Hollywood has rarely, if ever, handled racism deftly. Sure, the occasional movie gets it right, but its hardly universal. And you thought Fox News' Sexbox - Mass Effect Porn story was bad? Wait till Hollywood mishandles the racism and suddenly: Video Games turn kids into racists.

I could keep ranting, and its tempting to do so. But I try not to post more than three times in a thread.

Isn't Mass Effect a movie already? I mean, it tells it's narrative quite well, it doesn't need a movie based off of it to fill in the gaps.

could be really, really good
Of course the best bet is that it will be anything but. After all how many other video games that have had movies that could have been good? Potential means nothing when idiots involve themselves.

Once again Hollywood exemplifies its creative bankruptcy.

I'm at least surprised to see BioWare are not in a hurry of giving away the franchise. But I doubt any good production will ever come out of it, so long as the creatively-bankrupt Hollywood continues to show disrespect to game franchises by treating them as a free idea bucket.

I kind of thought the entire point of Mass Effect's style was that is was movie-esque in it's own right. It's already a playable movie, we don't need an actual movie to go along with it.

That said, if it was done properly, it could be awesome. But I have little faith in that happening.

Same, and it would appear Bioware shares the sentiment at least

Could work. The story of ME1 is that of a hollywood sci-fi movie to begin with, so adapting it shouldn't be too difficult. Actually, I think I said to myself when I finished it that "huh, I would've rather watched this as an action movie..."

ME2 looks like it'll be a much better 'game' and not as suited for movie adaptation.

I don't see how they could really do the story justice. ME was essentially a 40 hour+ movie...

I think ti would be hard to develop the characters in a manner that wasn't herky-jerky.

Yes, because movies based on video-games are always successful and enjoyed by everyone...
Well, maybe more movies based on games with an actual story would have a better chance, wouldn't they?

I mean, what's our frame of reference here? Super Mario Bros, a game about a plumber jumping on top of turtles? Tomb Raider, a game about big boobed girls shooting at T-rexes? Doom, a game about absolutely nothing? I can't even count the Uwe Boll movies because, let's be frank Uwe Boll would make a crappy Shakespeare adaptation, too.

But there's no reason for Mass Effect to be adapted any differently than Ender's Game or Star Trek. The same kind of storytelling is at the core and a screenwriter should find it remarkably easier to adapt the already narrative plot of ME than, say, the disconnected assassination missions of Hitman.
You forgot about how horrendous the Max Payne movie was.

What would be the point in making a film out of a game that pretty much is a film? It'd be a shortened, over-edited silver-screen Let's Play by someone who has missed the point.

Seriously, i don't want mass effect being ruined. There is far too much for just a movie to do it justice, stop trying to cash in damnit.

As a rule of thumb,an story driven game can NOT be put in movie format.
Unless they went for a 3h30 per movie triology,a Mass Effect movie would an incoherent shit pile with bland, undevelopped characters, and blue boobies popping up for no reason at one point in the movie.
