I wonder what determines, when it should pop up because many seem to have that problem here but I haven't encountered it in months.

What gets me is when I forgetfully sign in with my username instead of my email address, and it tells me "the password is correct, but you must sign in with your email". Like seriously? Fuck you, I clearly have the password and account, just sign me in.

I also remember the first time I rejected giving my full name, and a survey came up asking why. None of the possible answers were why I didn't want to give my name. That's pretty annoying, like it's great that you want to know why people don't want to give out their names, but the information isn't going to help if you don't let people tell you specifically why.

Also I hate how the "what to watch" tab is the first thing to come up when you go to the site, instead of my subscriptions. I don't know why YouTube assumes it knows better than me when it comes to what I want to watch.

And when videos that I have already watched and are greyed out appear in the "what to watch" tab, you know you've fucked up.

I also agree with the "plugging everything in to one another" annoyance. I've disabled all "share" and "like" buttons on my browser (aside from the actual ones on Facebook itself), so I don't have to see people begging for free advertising on every site.

That also reminds me of when people beg you to "like comment favorite subscribe follow share" etc on every video. Particularly in the beginning of a video. So ok, I get that there's obviously some kind of correlation between shares, likes, etc and monetary gain from YouTube ads, and it's alright to remind people that those options are there at the end of video, if they liked it, but telling people at the beginning of the video to do this boggles my mind. First of all, I haven't seen the video yet to know whether it's worth doing all that crap for, and second, if it's at the beginning of the video, by the time I got to the end, I've probably forgotten about all that stuff anyway.

Well this post is a little different for me, I usually try not to go on these rants but this just reminded me of a lot of little annoyances I had about YouTube in general.

I think he was just doing that out of spite. If you choose "I don't want to use my full name", it assumes you may want to change your mind two or three days later. And then you reject it again...and again... and again.

I agree, it's really annoying, and if there's one place I don't want to use my real name it's youtube.
IKR! What if you have to get into a crazy debate with someone(this happens far too often for me)! You don't want everyone knowing who you are.

Damnit YouTube, stop asking me to give you my name. I've already said no, several times. I've given you the reasons why I don't want to use my name and still you persist, giving me an inescapable popup that won't go away until I say, yet again, that I DON'T want to use my actual name for YouTube.

What is this fascination with plugging people into "the system"? Where all your social media places are morphed into one? I don't even have a Twitter, or a Facebook. In fact, the only "social media" site that I'm signed up to is YouTube.

Well...anyway. Micro-rant over now. I wouldn't even mind so much except it's a HUGE popup that not only pauses the video I'm trying to watch but I can't even click away from this invasion of privacy. If I refresh the page, it comes back. Even though I've said no, given my reasons. Now I can only say "ask me again later".

If there's an option to turn this entire thing off then I haven't seen it yet. If anyone else is having the same annoyances as me then go ahead and share.
I have a brilliant suggestion that will blow your mind.

Nobody is forcing you to use your real name. Make a general-purpose alias account and use that.

Actually it's not all that mind-blowing to anyone who has spent more than 12 seconds on the internet.
For example my real identity doesn't exist on the internet and pretty much never will. My IRL friends/colleagues know who I am, know the aliases I use, know my work/home email on a need-to-know basis...but my real name stays off the web. I have 2-3 "dump" email accounts, whenever some trash site wants to know my email I give them one of those. My spam-free email accounts remain with me.

I honestly could never understand why so many people can't grasp the concept of using alias names to quickly create accounts and just get shit over with. It takes only seconds. You're on the INTERNET and have 100% control over your anonymity, so use it for christ's sake. You can be a 15-year-old schoolgirl virgin or a 40-year-old father of 3 kids who owns a 5 million dollar house. How is something as little as Youtube putting you off lol?

I don't know why specifically he didn't do it, but it's asked me five times now since I first said no.

Yeah, YouTube is a piece of shit sometimes.

I get that annoying thing at least every day, I wish they would just let me watch my damn videos.

And don't get me started on the new shitty layout.

Well, at least they give you the option of saying no. They could just say "oh, you have a google account with your real name? Let us just make this universal so people will know its you!" But yes, a "don't ask me again" checkbox would be nice.

http://www.youtube.com/feed/subscriptions

Favourite that link rather than the homepage, and it'll take you where you want to go, rather than looking at videos you've already seen.

The homepage should be this anyway, but it's fairly easy to set this up instead.

On an unrelated note; I don't know what the fuck this Black Mirror thing is, but it can already go and die in a fucking fire. I'm already sick of seeing that same fucking long captcha. Piss off.

If I wanted to use my full name on Youtube, I would have used it as my username in the first place.

No thank you, I'll stick to being Redlin5.

At some point I ought to agree to provide a name, so I can go from DrCakey to Dr. Cakey. It isn't the 90's anymore - the Interwebz can handle spaces and special characters.

When you say no, a small window pops up, select "i want to use two names" and it will nto ask again. worked for me at first time and it nwo use different names for Gmail and Youtube. The way they worded it made me wait and think, am i really selecting what i want, but apperently yes it was.

BUti a gree that ever since google bought youtube they been constantly making it worse.

Edit: acutally sine the gmail merge i been kinda boycotting youtube. i very rarely go there and usually just watch videos on escapist and if im interested in something, i usually find the guys website isntead fo youtube account. ofc often its embed youtube and no way to escape that, but i try.

I just gave them my internet name, Garyn Dakari, as my real name and my screen name. Works fine for me, and google/youtube still does not have my real name.
Same. Except I'm Avery Awesomefellow. Deleted my Gmail (and transferred all accounts it was tied to, which took for-ev-er) when I discovered I somehow had mysteriously been signed up for Google Plus. I now use GMX (an email that's just an email?! Madness!) and fake names for Youtube.

Yeah I use my real name in ALOT of places. Youtube Is one of them where I draw the line. And I've had that username since the first year youtube popped up on the internet, they'll pry it from my cold dead hands.

I just kept saying no to the prompts and eventually it gave me the option to use two names for my google account.

Just be patient.

Money; money, dear boy! There's a lot of money to be made for stealing privacy on the web! Why? I have no fucking idea? Let's explain some rationale on why they do.

Wait that's copy-pasted. It is true though. There's a fortune to be made with selling private details. Exactly why would people want to know? They'd like to commit crimes using other people's names, of course!

You have no idea the problems that arise from stealing privacy...

If you want to know which sites exactly have some scrubs of data in your browser, download Collusion the addon for Firefox (no idea if it's for Chrome). Should enlighten people. :p

Well...anyway. Micro-rant over now. I wouldn't even mind so much except it's a HUGE popup that not only pauses the video I'm trying to watch but I can't even click away from this invasion of privacy. Try AdBlock. Disable it here, as I've seen people get a warning for admitting that they use one on this site. >.<

I don't like using my real name on youtube either. I like to keep my offline and online lives as separate as I can, if possible.

I had this issue before. I typically use the name "Volundarkvioa" (it's a Romanized version of a Nordic tale, although in English tongue it'd be much closer to "Volundarkvida"), and I had an account on Youtube with this name for years. I also had made a Google+ account for some unbeknownst reason, and it confused the two. I ended up being forced to make a new e-mail and a new account just to get onto Youtube (and comment and stuff I mean). Although since like you, I don't like using my real name, I just put in two names not related to me in anyway "Letanas" as my first name (it's an anagram of Satan'el that I made up years ago when I was trying to write a book), and "Volundarkvioa" (since that had been my traditional username for years).

It's intrusive, it's stupid, but if the only way to stop it is to "use your real name", I suggest just using a fake name, or dealing with it.
