Y'know, Susan, if you married Paul, you wouldn't even have to change any of your important IDs or documentation.

I'm just sayin'.

Maybe I'll check this game out tomorrow. I love dark humor, and the tone and look of the game are kind of intriguing.

Or we could be Arendt-Arendt hyphenates.

Mind you, Paul's fiancee and my husband make this outcome moderately unlikely.

I love it! The game is awesome BUT it has committed the cardinal sin of trying to get me to buy time to play the game, I can't just play it it has to say "Hey if you don't want to wait 24 hours pay us" like some street thug (though I can't blame them they do need to make money to keep the game going).

I simply refuse to make a twitter account. That service ranks among the single stupidest things I've ever seen.

this sounds so awesome, especially because im on a hobo budget this month (48 bucks) so i cant afford any new games this month, which will make next month just as hobo-y but with lots of awesome games to keep me from going hungry.

but as you may have suspected from that above text alone, I'm a very sad, antisocial and pathetic man, so i really hope the social part is limited.

alright im in it, must say im not a fan of having to wait for several minutes between each action, but the story seems interesting even if its flow does get broken up by the format.

but i have played for 10 or so minutes and i have already seduced a widower to let me sleep in her spare bedroom instead of having to pay for a motel room, insulted an older gentleman who was just sitting by him self trying to enjoy a drink and unlocked secrets about the way the society is working, so I'm already in love.

Well, you know, there's always Utah... err, maybe not.

Also- I didn't realize that the site actually required Twitter. I refuse to have anything to do with that abomination, so I guess I don't get to play. Pity, really.

Hello Twitter-haters. It's worth me pointing out that a sizeable number of our players register a Twitter account solely to play the game, and never touch it for any other purpose.

> I can't just play it it has to say "Hey if you don't want to wait 24 hours pay us" like some
>street thug

I want your street thugs. Ours aren't that polite. :) You really don't have to buy time. The vast majority of our players don't. Which makes us sad of course, we'd much rather run a subscription than a freemium service.

>or you could all get married, you would be the Arendt-Arendt-Arendt-Arendts

If you could sort that out, I'd buy tickets.

@infinite, @swaki, thanks for the love.

@alexis.kennedy - Don't worry, I've seen games with bland concept and/or gameplay prosper, and from what I've read here neither of these is bland in your game. Heck, I've even donated to such a game because the admin was too much entertainment in chat =)

You don't have to wait between each action, you can use up all of the ones you currently have one right after the other. You simply have to wait for them to recharge (unless you spend Fate to get them instantly).

And for people railing against Twitter, it's not like you have to actually do anything with Twitter in order to play the game. You simply have to have an account, which is to say a user name and password. Other than using it to sign into the game, you can completely ignore it. (Yes, Alexis already said all of this, I'm just agreeing.)

And for the record (sorry, Alexis) I have yet to spend a single real-world cent on the game, and I'm having a fantastic time with it. It's still very, very satisfying and engaging even without paying for extra Fate.

I tried signing up for the sole purpose of playing this game, but Twitter said no and wouldn't let me. It had some bloody technical error so it couldn't create my account, but my suggested username and email address are now considered "already taken".

Twitter is poo.

Gah! You may not need to USE twitter to play but You need twitter access which means I am banned at work, so until I get a smartphone which lets me play this I am out as I will not find time in my life outside of work between gaming and social activities.

Was really intruiged by this (especially having just watched Sherlock Holmes to re-ignite my love of Victorian England), oh well will hopefully get to it in the next month or 2

The game sounds very appealing to me. I also like small inventive projects getting attention. But, I am conflicted at the use of a twitter account. I am morally against twitter. I don't like the trend I see in society of short-sighted instant gratification, and twitter seems to propagate this. People seem to be losing the ability of actual social interaction since these networking sites popped up. Instant mild Asperger's for everyone. The services aren't tools for just keeping in touch with friends and networking, they're a disease. You would think as someone gets older(aka grows up) they would gain knowledge, but I just see people becoming dumber and dumber. And society caters to these retards! When we tried to circumvent natural selection and survival of the fittest is when we doomed ourselves. One day soon the retards will run amuck in the streets. Pretty soon we won't even be able to tell the difference between normal people and the retards. Then the interbreeding will start. Next thing you know maybe your spouse has some latent form of retard that surfaces violently one night over dinner, requiring you to take your children and flee. You couldn't possibly have known this beforehand because the retards had tainted the gene pool. You thought you and your family were safe... well, think again.

You can't change the location before you get your first house.

While I find the theme to be interesting, the execution is... less so. It takes forever to get even a little amount of money. They obviously want people to play PVP but then put a anyone who chose the "Heart's Desire" ambition at a heavy disadvantage, since the stat that is most important to that questline has absolutly no use in PVP.

You actually end up bumping up all of your stats over the course of the game. Grinding just one won't really get you very far at all. And you can ignore Knife & Candle completely if you want.

God, I am loving this game. But I've just started and can someone fill me in on the purpose of Goods bought from the Bazaar? I assume they're for selling in other places but I would prefer not to blow all my money on jars and jars of souls, only to find them worthless. But then again, I would have jars and jars of people's souls. Badass.

Hello folks, Paul here.

Tattaglia: selling goods at the bazaar gets you in-game currency (Echoes & pennies). Completing missions gives you goods. So you can sell goods at the Bazaar to earn Echoes, which in turn you can use to buy more expensive items that bump up your stats. However, some missions require goods to complete. Of course, if you simply wish to collect people's souls, you can. They may prove useful if you end up working closely with the Brass Embassy. Although we can't offer any advice on how to live with yourself. Those poor bewildered spirits, moaning in their little bottles...

Thanks for the help, kind sir. And may I say, this game is a work of art. The artwork is fantastic and the style is both funny and hauntingly unique, something rare in most games - browser based and otherwise - today. I might just fork out a couple of crisp New Zealand dollars for some Fate.

Keep it up, delicious friend!

Dispite the use of Twitter, it is quite a step above the Facebook games like Mafia Wars. It's very interesting, though I'm annoyed that I can't get my coworker to join so I can have someone to do duo opportunity cards with and "socialize" in my house.

But I really want to play Knife and Candle. Of course I didn't expect that I would just be using one stat, but everyone having the dangerous ambition (whatever it is) will still have an advantage over me. I wouldn't mind as much if there was any compensation for it in the rest of the game (which might be there and I just haven't found out about now, but it's definitely not spelled out anywhere). Not that it will matter too much for at least one more week, since there seems to nobody playing who doesn't have every at least at 20, which is still a far way for me.

Oh, and I'm Ceruton in-game, by the way.

You'll enjoy the grinding, though, because the things you do to up your stats are so...unusual. And there a bunch of different ways to do it, too, which helps keeps it feeling fresh. I hop from stat to stat (buff Dangerous for this 10 actions, switch to Watchful for the next 10, etc.) and am having a blast. Ok, so I'm losing pretty consistently at Knife and Candle, but that won't last forever...

Ever since I went insane (and got better) the dream opportunities show no result text any more. Does this happen to anybody else?

Edit: So this seems to work now, it was probably just a server issue. However I'm now grinding for my rooftop shack. Of the options given, it seemed to be superior to the other options since you can easily get six rats per adventure so you should get easily 150 per day, even if you log on only twice a day. Everything else presented to me was either to expensive for me or required items that I haven't found anywhere yet.

At least you get an uncommon item out of it...
I tried to decipher runes today and got nightmare +4 and nothing else because I was unlucky, putting me to an eight. It's not really that bad turning crazy (no permanent stat damage, lost items or anything) it just needs a lot of adventures to return to being sane without raising other stats much.

Well, if you use your Twitter feed to follow people, then it makes them easier to keep track of, but you don't have to. To play chess, go to your lodgings. Once you're there, you'll find a bunch of options for activities you can invite people to...chess, a private supper, etc.

I'm not a big fan of twitter myself, but this game seduced me. Echo Bazaar is highly amusing, definitely worth playing for story snippets alone.
However, it could use an alchemy system (or something along those lines) so that we may put all those stockpiles of various odds and ends to good use, instead of just using them as alternate currency.

That said, allow me to declare that Allan_Foe [http://twitter.com/Allan_Foe] will gladly join you in an endeavour of your choice, but note he she they are not available for sparring as of this writing (still Rank 0).
How can someone with Dangerous=15 win a single match at Knife & Candle? Gah!

I'm currently at dangerous 21, watchful 24 and shadowy 14 and all targets in Knife and Candle are still way out of my league... So in short, you probably can't.

Today I login into Echo Bazaar an it throws me onto the character creation screen... HUH?!
Where does one get help for this sort of thing? The "Help" link on chobazaar.failbettergames.com seems to require that I register a character!

All's fixed, it was because of me renaming my twitter account recently.

I'm not exactly a social person (case in point when I started regularily viewing the escapist there were 3 or 4 zero punctuation videos yet this is my second forum post). And I hate all that twitter stands for. But the ARG aspect of this game is really interesting chatting with all the masters and trying to piece the world together from all the snippets of information (follow Mr_Eaten you will not regret it).

It's just too bad that twitter has a 140 character limit. It's impossible to say anything interesting or in character for that matter, since it's supposed to be victorian England and they seemed quite verbose back then.

This is really interesting and I'm really enjoying myself. It's a good game to return to every hour or so during your day, so that you don't have to wait 24 hours to play at all again, and your not always playing. I also love how they chose Victorian London over any other city or time period, because it really goes great with the brand of horror and humor they have.

There are a few things which bug me about the game though. For one, when an action is locked (like changing your residence) due to lack off items, I wish the game would tell me how many of those items I had without forcing me to go to my 'me' screen. The exhaustion system is also kind of annoying, not because you get exhausted at all, but because of something else. I made my profile at 3PM, so I use all my actions that day and eventually go to bed. But, since I created the profile at 3PM, I have to wait from until I waked up until 3PM to be rested again and get more action points. This is kind of annoying, because there's no way to change the time that you get your possible actions back. It would be nice if you always got them back at 8am or something, because then you only have to wait for less than 24 hours on the first day. But this would probably be problematic, since then they'd have to work on actually keeping track of the time, rather than just having a timer, and they'd have to account for timezones. It could also be an option to pay fate to change your 'reset' time, which would also solve the problem and would be simpler. But, these are both minor problems.

Also, I accidentally discarded the opportunity card for the house I was saving up for, but that's my fault.

Your action clock is based off of when you made your first action of the day - that is to say, when you "spent" your first of that day's 70 actions. So to reset your clock to something more workable, you just need to take a day off from the game, then make sure you use up all your actions in an agreeable time frame.

I think I'm done with this game now. Failing three times at straightforward-tests to conclude an ongoing mission - and the last one was the hard conclusion to "The curate and his sister" (which I attempted at Investigating... 30), a quest that can't even be repeated.

Right now, I'm frustrated enough by my everyday life. I don't need some chance-based browser game to poke into my wounds.

Turns out, Knife & Candle can be fun! I was saving my Fate for early Carnival entry but I've blown 20 so far on action refreshes.

Edit: 30

If anyone needs anyone else murdered, poisoned, silenced or removed from polite society I am your man.

I also make a wicked hunter's stew should any of you be interested in joining me for supper, although it would be better for the both of us if you refrain from asking what the stew is made of.

To everyone who wants my help getting rid of nightmares: I'm currently at nightmares 5 myself, so I can't afford to help you. Sorry.

I'd be happy about supper invitations, though. I need a lot more of those tokens of admiration.
Actually if you listen to nightmares you go up a little, but if you talk, you go down a lot. Net effect of both listening to each other is both going down a bit.

I crumbled under the pressure and snagged a twitter just to check this out. It's a shame that there doesn't seem to be any easy way to meet people within the game. I guess that's what the rest of the internet is for.
