How are they beating Bioware?

Valve's best game was 2 hours long...
least it wasn't full of gimmicks to lengthen gameplay.
I don't understand how Portal is found funny, it really isn't. That stuff with the cake was a waste of time, as well.
its internet and black humor. not everyone gets it.
Oh, I get you.

Because I don't find it funny, it must be that I don't get it.

Well, thanks for showing me that you're an idiot.
right, you call half life boring and support MASS EFFECT (the epitomy of boring) and call ME an idiot? riiiiight..... looks we got a troll in the hen house boys. fire, guns, and clubs. standard procedure.
Oh, man. Mass Effect was boring!

Mass Effect 2, on the other hand...

I don't always see that as a bad thing. I'd rather play a good two hour game multiple times than play an average ten hour fps.

OT:Your guess is as good as mine. It must have been a big surge in the last couple of days.
I'd rather play a game for 80 hours and enjoy 90% of it than play a 2 hour game and enjoy 95% of it.
What is this magical game you speak of? Maybe I'm just not so easily amused, but I've never played a game that stayed interesting after the 10-20 hour mark.

That's not my problem.

I much prefer longer games or short games that have a lot of replayability.

Too bad Half-life 2 is boring as hell.
You know opinions never make good arguments...=/
Well, that's just your opinion.
Actually that's a fact not an opinion.
It's subjective because you think it's fact.
It's an observation, it's what all facts are based on.

It would only be subjective if I based it on personal preference which I don't.

You prefer hearing arguments with fact.

I much prefer to hear peoples' opinions.

It makes it much more fun.

Yeah that's true.

...

You know, honestly I think Valve has been getting lazy...=P
Maybe it's the nostalgia goggles but I think Bioware hasn't matched the quality of BG1&2 yet.

I did really like Portal, though. I just don't understand the fuss about Half-life 2. Can you explain why you think it's good?

Valve probably won because Half-Life completely revolutionised videogames and the way stories are told in them.

Fair enough. I prefer shorter games because I have yet to see a long game that didn't suffer from a horrible lack of editing (story and gameplay-wise). If 80 hour games really do entertain you for that long more power to you, but frankly I don't understand how you don't get bored.

Maybe I don't look for problems as much as you do.

The cavalry arrived, /b/ and steam showed up and fought them off!
Erm.. your memory might be a bit fuzzy.
Close to the end an announcment was put up on the 4chan group. I'm guessing thats who helped along with the steam announcment.

Well them and probably /v/
I honestly think that this is true, despite some threats of /b/ voting for Zynga "for the lulz", I think that some realized there is more lulz to be hand by trolling people on facebook when they cry that Zynga lost. That and the steam announcement helped a ton, I know that half my friends on steam who had never heard of the escapist before were like hey did you hear about this contest?
As far as I can tell this is pretty much correct. Support came from unlikely fronts and bailed us out. Hard to think of /b/ as the Rohan to our Gondor but meh, never look a ift horse in the mouth.

In a side note: I love your avatar.

lets all agree that Half Life is an awesome series (although Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 were better BOOYAH.....voted bioware baby)
Steam is a POS that should have never been invented and allow us to play effin games normally (although it was nice to find cheap copies of Vampires the Mas. Bloodlines and Bloodrayne which was cool)
Left 4 Dead is a zombie killing good time
and that Santa shot my dog on Christmas (I will avenge you fido)

Well you certainly do any time you post about HL2 =)

Anyway, cheap shots aside, I don't "look for problems" so much as just get bored with a game after a certain period of time. Very few games have mechanics that don't become rote after 20 hours, and even fewer games are willing to introduce new mechanics after that point. Also, for whatever reason longer games typically don't integrate narrative into gameplay as well as shorter games, so even if I'm still interested in the story there's little reason for me to continue playing the game when I can get the rest of it by watching cinematics on youtube.

Believe me, I'd love to have a 80 hour game that is as engaging as a good 10 hour one, but as it is now the game industry seems to favor quantity over quality in terms of play time.

The series kinda reminds me of a twilight zone/outer limits episode or something from the X-files.

It's a Lovecraftian Sci-fi thriller that holds key set pieces of plot in mystery, and builds on the dread that there's some untold cross dimensional horror still waiting to take the world.

I like it because I'm a big fan of this type of stuff.

As a story, HL2 is really keen for anyone that grew up on 90s shows like unsolved mysteries or anything to do with paranormal activities.

Honestly I thought the gameplay kinda sucked and was handled better in the first game, the second game just had a better story arc and fleshed out characters.

Sounds good for someone like you.

I just found the story boring and I felt it never even tried to engage me. I never felt like a part of the story. I just felt... well, like I was my pervy ol' self, constantly making snide remarks about Alyx's ass, or something.

Might have something to do with Gordon Freeman, I mean if your character can't show any emotion how is anyone suppose to feel like they're being engaged.

Although if seeing enough shows like this has taught me anything, expect GF to pull off his human mask to show a 180 pound preying mantis underneath in the third act...lol
