Anime News Network. Any time I hear about a new series I check up on it there for a basemark of genre and votes.
Same here with TV Tropes. It is such a useful website for finding shows with specific themes, even if it does waste hours of my time if I'm not careful. This, and Anime-Planet. I think about the sort of things I want to watch, and I'm prepared to experiment a bit and try something completely random.
