I tend to use my own artwork for my avatars. It just seems more fun like that.

That being said, I didn't draw the one I'm using at the moment. That doesn't make it any less awesome, though.

Mine I edited out of a fan-fic that I just happened to run across cause I thought it was awesome.

OP: I find it's mostly because everyone seems to be fairly intelligent and likes to kinda have their own little identifier, if you will, to show their unique individuality and interests.

Its because the avatars are our digital faces that encourages us to be unique.
Also, this is a "gaming" forum, rather than just a "Halo" or "Dr. Who" oriented forum. Its very open to interpretation.
And some of us even pick something that has nothing to do with gaming *points to himself*

The reason is that everyone wants to be different to the rest to be 1) Recognizable and B) To match the way they look or C) To show something they love/interests them. I picked the Stethoscope since I dream to be a doctor eventually.

Well, if everyone's going to say what they've got...

Mine's the Calculator from Final Fantasy Tactics, a game I've toyed with remaking for the PC on and off. Square/Enix doesn't seem to have done much with it.

I'd guess the reason for so little duplication is that there are many, many images for a given franchise and the more popular it is, the more there are to choose from. I see a fellow Final Fantasy fan higher up in the thread, but they picked the White Mage from FF1. If I wanted to have a White Mage avatar too, I could pick the FFT one, one of the 8-Bit Theater versions, or any of many hand-drawn ones or portraits. There's so many options!

We users like to have our own unique style based upon our interest...mine is the representation of a character from horror movie that i enjoy and so far i've yet to see anyone copy it.

I avoid the problem by drawing my own avatar. Actually, it's a cut portion of a drawing I made, but still.

We are not Anonymous. We forgive, we forget. We live, we learn. We are who we are, as individuals. No two people are the same here, as we freely disregard all but three of the rules. /B/ is where you go to be a collective; you go to The Escapist to be alone together.

Also, most of the sign-ups are pretty good about lurking before choosing a face to go with that name.

Personally, I simply tried to pick an avatar that nobody else was using yet still represented something about me. Most direct game related things were taken so I picked a classical foilist seeing as I'm one myself (well, not classical - I fence in the "new international" style).

My avatar is a smug looking McDonald's chicken nugget I got for dinner a while back. One of a kind if you ask me.

You make a good point.

I'd be well freaked out if someone else was using my avatar.

Not everyone uses mainstream things in their avatars. I picked the most iconic scene from one of my favorite movies.

Everyone likes to be unique, most people have a story for their avatar, whether it is just, "a picture of me" or "some game I thought was awesome", or maybe more like "some crappy thing I made in 2 minutes in a 3d program which I have since named and which has an entire backstory based off a friend of mine." As such, the only real repeats you'll see are from stuff that multiple people thought were awesome, and only if they both thought the same part of this one thing was viable as an avatar...

Shapsters made mine. Took my original, which was just Benjamin Disraeli, and Canadianed it up to the max!
On another note:

Have you ever lived in a igloo?

/sarcasm
Well, no, I live in a log cabin. We got a pond outside for hockey, and we harvest maple syrup from the trees. But my dad isn't a mountie or a lumberjack. I'm a failure at being stereotypically Canadian.
Lol. Thanks for the laugh. O'course it's alway been meh' dream ta go out ther in dem ther You-con mountins' and live wit da seals while fashioning ma clothes out of some o' dat maple syrup. O'course I need to bring meh shotgun wit me cause it be done attached to meh' arm. Praise O-bama. *Polishes shotgun*

Well, variety is the spice of life, eh?
And we all like to see something different, something unique...
I edited this avatar myself from the original gif, first so that it worked, then the Escapist 'e'.
It is unique.

I love Daleks, I think that's all I need to say about mine other than it's pretty much tricked out for all year round.
