It could just mean that making a video (almost) every week for three years adds up to a lot of views too. Or a lot of people like yellow and swearing. Personally I like the yellow. And didn't ZP start with The Darkness?
Nope, Fable was first. Check yahtzee19, his youtube.
Wrong, Darkness was first. You can check his youtube :p

That's some darn impressive numbers. But don't tell Yahtzee, his ego will swell up more and he'll demand a higher pay. (I kid, really.)
Zero Punctuation has a *lot* of rewatch value, so wouldn't be surprised if numbers were bolstered by (occasional) repeated viewing.

The ZP videos seem to be inspiring as well, since one of the best Rebecca Mayes songs is of her ripping into Yahtzee.

I think Yahtzee's appeal transcends gaming as his wit can be appreciated by anyone as long as they have a vague idea of what he is talking about.

Wow, there was a lot foul smelling dungola in that list. I'd move Yahtzee away from them before the stench gets on 'im.

True but surely the amount of video's count? You could compare all his videos to a guy who's made three short ones and say your comparing the same thing, all of Yahtzee's to all of his
Someone who gets 60+million hits for a single video (or a short series) wouldn't be something you'd really want to compare with Yahtzee anyway - not that these people haven't been successful at what they've done (they have), but they're doing something different to the serially successful (the ones who get big audiences every week)

So even if - as seems to be the cry - you calculated mean hits per video 'for fair comparison', you'd still have to remove all the outliers. Single videos which were massively popular due to being topical and well presented, for example, often get ridiculous numbers of views - but the authors never create anything again, so it's just not comparable to people who are producing series'.

The numbers are impressive on their own, but it's even more interesting when you think about the audiences. Sure, Zero Punctuation is hilarious, but it's also aimed squarely at core gamers, an audience that many would still call "niche." The YouTube series, on the other hand, have a much broader "mainstream" appeal. What does this mean?
I think it means that

We are comparing apples to apples
in more than one way. YouTube might have a relatively mainstream audience demographic, but it's the internet so it's mainstream by virtue of 'being built out of lots of different niche cultures'. (Not that this is entirely removed from real life, of course)

The successful people on YouTube each appeal to a niche market themselves, and then they tend to corner that market, brilliantly (much like Yahtzee has done).

Genuinely mainstream stuff just doesn't seem quite as popular - either because it's so diffuse (there's so much of it, it's hard for an audience to coalesce in one place), or because mainstream audiences are looking elsewhere (they're still watching TV).

I think it's more of the former than the latter.

He beat that Fred thing, right? Please tell me that Fred isn't one of the few that surpassed ZP.
Thats what I'm thinking as well. I really hope something as retarded as Fred didn't surpass him...
Let's see:

FRED
Snip
VIEWS (ALL-TIME): 585,136,315
Not only did he beat Yahtzee handily, but that's over half a billion. Actually.... Fred's top of the list. "Nigahiga" comes in second at 546 million, whoever that is. That can't be right. Did someone go back in time and change the past so we get the "bad" future? This just can't be the right universe.

Okay, looking over this list, is there some sort of other Internet out there I haven't been on? I haven't heard of ANY of these other than Fred, and even that's only because someone posted a rant about him where I saw it that could be best described as pure, distilled hatred.

You know, it's days like this that make me want to hang myself just to get off this planet. I think I don't because of a mix of survival instinct and a belief that I shouldn't kill myself unless I can take a lot of stupid people with me.

I imagine if the Escapist hadn't picked him up--he probably wouldn't have those numbers. They would be high, no doubt about that--just because of the originality he took with it--but not as high as they are. ZP caters to the core gamer unit. The Escapist featured him on a site that also caters to that. So it makes sense.

Top youtubers seem to lean more towards generalized comedy/news/entertainment. They don't cater to a specific audience. If you took, on the other hand, youtubers who actually did cater to a specific audience, their numbers are probably much smaller--due to the lack of publicity. So comparing ZP to top youtubers isn't really...realistic because their content, intended audience and medium of presentation is entirely different.

At least, it seems that way to me.

I can't quite remember what episode it was, but I do believe Yathzee said he based the value of his life on how many views he gets per week.

*Insert witty joke about his eggo/pen*s here*

Ah well I'll still tune in every week to listen to him. Maybe touch myself a little while I do it.

I really want to rant about how mainstream youtube stars are just zany hipster twats with no talent who make pop culture references who's entire fan base consists of twatty 14-year-old girls.

Oh wait, I just did.

I'm glad Yahtzee stays away from that territory.

I bet you didn't start using Twatty as a verb until you started watching Yahtzee
