A lot, lot, of grind is involved. The grind to fun ratio is about 3:1 , but the fun part makes it worthwhile. Even at 80 you have to grind like a slave to have enough money for raiding bills. PvP is cheaper though, so at 80 you grind less.
2-3 daily quests to pay for a geared plate wearers repair bill. thats 3 quests.... 15 minutes.

Well I don't mind playing a long long time. I just don't like leveling in the same spot for hours on end. Is it basically training in a spot by killing stuff? Or is it more Level-as-you-explore the regions type of game play.
It's basically you llevel up in one spot for hours on the same mobs. At least, it was when I played it when it first came out.

It's a lot of grind, but if you enjoy combat with your class then you won't mind, since you should always have a quest on the go.

Its not Runescape grind you actaully have something to do when your leveling instead of point, click, point, click and so on. Also break up the leveling so that you don't become bored out of your mind.

Tbh there is not mutch "grind" hell even you can ask a m8 of yours to Recrute a friend and enjoy x3 xp till level 60, Outland and Northrend have what you could say as story driven leveling like for hellfire(first level 60+ zone) you start by helping fight off deamons and it progresses from there. plus it helps to read up on the backstory a bit or play warcraft 3 + TFT to get the gist of it. end game is fun but not for most people i know i guy who does nothing but level different characters. you dont even have to raid there is pvp battlegrounds and the arena system.

The vast majority of the time you spend playing the game is a grind. You are either killing stuff to fulfill a quest requirement or just for XP, collecting stuff for later use or just to sell, producing stuff you don't need to level your tradeskills, killing other players for honor or just because and so forth. The entire premise of the game is built around a grind.

This is not to say it's a BAD game, or even an unpleasant time. Any game you play for more than a few hours involves a grind. With WoW, the key seems to be find a class who's core mechanic is interesting and it will give you the best chance to make it to the end game.

WoW had more of a grind aspect when first released but it's no where near as bad now There are almost always tons of quests to pick up and do and the areas you do them change frequently, plus you said :

So if you're playing for her why not get some help from her on the instance quests making levelling even faster/less of a grind to you.

I leveled 4 characters to 70, 2 of those up through to 80, over the course of my 2 years playing. First time you play you may get frustrated and it may seem long. but once you know what to do or if you know what to do it isn't bad at all.
However...this is indeed something that is best enjoyed while chatting with friends or having something else to distract you. it is nowhere near as bad as Aion: The Tower of Grinding. but then again when i left the game back in january due to the complete mess it had become i couldn't see a point in continuining to play when all the dungeons at the time were piss easy except for that 3 drake whatever it is and pvp was just a complete nightmare. If you've got friends who'll support you thats a plus but if you're sticking out the long hours by yourself then it won't be as bad.

You must not be a very good player if that's all you pay. Repair bills are one thing, profession grind is involved, bills for consumables such as flasks, food, reagents, cost a lot. I would pay 100g per progression raid, repair bills were more like 10 daily quests.
I wear leather soo..

50g for reps, I never leave the city without repairing.
5-10g for a flask, take along about 5
I farm my own food.
would cost me about 10g for enough poisons for a raid or two.

110g...ish

You do grind, although it's a lot less grind intensive than other MMOs (Aion comes to mind), probably 8 days playtime to reach cap, you can do it in less but it's not likely.

I'm curious, I'm thinking about picking up Wow as a desto lock but i'm not too interested if the grind is really as bad as everyone says. I want to play because after my friend got her hunter to lvl 80 she wants me to play. So can anyone give me a time frame for play time, just until I can go on like raids.
As for an MMO it's considered one of the least grindy games and joked about in the MMO community for being easy mode.

But those guys are just nerds, and I'd say for anyone else it's still pretty much a grindfest, but a fun grindfest so go for it if you have the time and interest to play it...plus friends that might be already playing it.

As for a playtime reaching end game should take you maybe a month, if you level grind really fast maybe even a week.

Just don't reroll a lot, it'll kill the fun factor really fast having to start over again and again....0o

Id sometimes pay over a 100 for reps cause of progression. It was a bit earlier so 50g for flask, id get 2 per raid, that's another 100, prefer buying food to grinding and only best food is an option so some 50g on that, putting it to about 250g. Unless its a farm raid, then i actually earn money hehe.
Flasks are damn cheap on my server last I checked. I brought about 4 mongoose flasks for like 20g...all the others I saw where about 20g each

What game is there that doesn't have grind?
Any platformer, puzzle, first person shooter, most racing titles as well as some RPGs (especially action-RPGs like fable).
Every genre you mentioned has you repeating the same exact thing over and over again.

Grind.
My understanding of grind is that it is leveling or farming outside of the story in order to forward your character enough to move on in the game, repetition is different from grind.
My understanding is that grind is the repetition of the same activity over and over to achieve a higher goal.

I.E. Any game ever made.

Same thing as RPG. Every game is an RPG. You role play a character in every game.
Not so much in real time strategies, but that's getting off topic. The way grind is used is in a way so as to imply repetition outside of the story/missions that is neccissary to progress through the game (like farming). I don't think it actually has a technical definition, but I'm fairly certain that's the most commonly excepted one.
Agree on a tom-ay-to/tom-ah-to then?
Agreed, there's no further benifet as to discussing slightly differing definitions.

Yea... I have over 60,000 gold and I log on maybe 45 minutes a day average. I didn't grind anything to get that gold, I simply played the Auction House and exploited morons selling things cheaply.

It wasn't very grinding as MMOs go when it began and now there's very little at all. I picked up WoW for awhile recently and I was shocked and impressed by just how little of the shitty grindy elements that caused me to quit last time are present anymore. Pretty much the only parts you really have to grind anymore are dungeons if you want decent loot. And honestly that's not such a big deal as there some of the more fun parts of the game.

If it wasn't for the fact that it slows down considerably about lvl 35 or so until about lvl 50 I'd be a level 80 Troll Shaman by now.
