How short is too short?

All the girls around here WOULD do the shortskirt + leggings combo, but they're not allowed

why?

Well, it was okay at first, a few girls wearing it. But then the head of Sixth Form (a dull, uncharasmatic lump of coal of a woman who should have never been put in a position that required her to talk to people (she's so stupidly bad at motivating people)) saw that the girls in the younger, uniformed years (our school is year 1 through to Sixth Form, with only Sixth Form having no uniform) wearing 'innappropriate' clothing such as this. Deciding that it was the girls in Sixth Form that were inspiring such deviation (because, of course, it couldn't be that both sets of girls got the idea from the current NATIONAL fashion trend (to be fair, this silly woman has never heard of fashion...or taste...or how to be pleasant) and banned it.

Same system here. How bad is it on your end?

In our school, we can't even wear jeans.

The uniform basically runs as follows - boys can't wear X, Y and Z as trousers, basically meaning they have to wear black trousers (the kind you wear with suits), and they have to wear proper 'shirts' (no t-shirts or anything).

The girls can wear dresses and skirts etc, but only longer than knee length.

Made extremely hypocritical by the fact that our version of your 'uncharasmatic lump of coal of a woman who should have never been put in a position that required her to talk to people' almost always wears a short skirt.

We're allowed Jeans, but only just. No hats, no shirts with logos or writing on 'em, nothing. Fortunately, it's not specific enough to ban ponchos, which I wear...ALL THE TIME. Hardly 'businesswear', but if I can find a loophole, I'm exploting the hell outta that cat.

Also, EURGH, imagining my Uncharasmatic Lump of Coal in a short dress is worthy of a lot of vomit and a tragic case of sepakku. The word "Frumpy" was INVENTED for her. It looks like she has a watermelon stuck in her throat, 'cus it bulges weirdly around the collarbone. It's her one defining characteristic and the only thing people mention about her other than "what a b*tch"

How old are we talking here? if they are 15-18 years old I wouldn't have a problem with walking behind them in stairs! :3

To qualify as shorts, they have to cover more than the person's underwear does, otherwise it's just an exceptionally large belt.

I like this answer. May have to use that at some point.

Anyway it depends on the situation really, but I would say somewhere around covering up your privates is good system.

not everyone is an oversexed 15 yo heterosexual boy (so perhaps the poster complaining about being behind girls going up the stairs isnt). To be fair you should be as enthusiastic about other men running around in next to nothing, or at the very lest tollerant of it. But, heterosexual men seem to have the uncanny need to scream "OH DEAR CHRIST" anytime they see another man dressed in anything less than a burka outside of a sporting event and run yelling back into their closet lest someone think they are gay.

Too short for me is when I can see their undergarments. Seriously. If you're going to wear something that short, then at least make it cover your underwear. There is a reason you're wearing an extra layer over your underwear, and it's probably not because you're cold.

The shortest I go is around mid-thigh. I don't like wearing anything that hits the knee, or below the knee, because it's a little unflattering on me, so I can understand when other people wear short skirts/shorts/dresses to elongate their leg or whatever. But it's really unnecessary to go baring it all to the world. Also, some people should really be more considerate and just keep more of their body covered up as a service to the world. Especially in Australia.

Lately, especially in the older generations among us, people have been complaining about how many of the young women and girls of various ages have started dressing in outfits that are shorter and lower than before. Almost every girl I know has a pair of short shorts, and there was even a girl at school yesterday who was wearing shorts that pretty much had her ass hanging right out of them. (A crude description, but accurate.)

Basically, I would like to know where you draw the line at acceptable, Escapists. Also, when does expressing oneself through clothing end, and offending the public begin? Where do you sit on this issue?

The amount of skin you are allowed to show has an inverse correlation to body weight as it relates to the Z-variable (height) with an discontinuous qualifier (gender, as in female)

on females, i think it is entirely based on the environment. walking around the university with your ass-cleavage or lower cheeks catching day light now and then... your claim that you are here for an education is dubious. but at a bar, day light festival, club, or concert? why the hell not? girls like to look sexy. as for jail-bait, going to school everyday is closest thing they have to bars, fests, or clubs so I guess I understand.

How they want to be perceived is their business.

on dudes.... the only feasible excuse for it not being 2 inches beneath the knee is that you are training/competing in endurance running or biking. I like to think we have evolved since the 80's.

Well to me it depends if the girl is hot!

There is nothing helpful that comes from wearing too short shorts. For men, it's distracting at best, and at worst connects right into our libido and triggers thoughts that we shouldn't be having about strangers in the street. How would you feel if it was someone else looking at your sister or mother? It's hard enough being disciplined and self controlled without this sort of temptation.

And for women, it means that men will objectify them, that they are more and more objectified and valued because of what they look like (you only need to read some of the posts in this thread) rather than who they are. And who wants to be judged for how they look?

So it's a situation where no-one wins.

Well, honestly, people need to wear what looks best on them. I don't want a larger woman walking around with a dress that goes to the middle of her thighs. And short shorts are fine, as long as it covers your ass, we're fine.

Totally agree on that one. It depends highly on the person... Luckily for us, most people know what they can or can't wear.

In terms of girls my age, slightly younger or older... there is no limit toward how short their shorts/skirt can be. Does it mean they're a whore? Most likely but provided they are at least moderately good looking it gives me something to look at.

That being said young girls wearing short shorts is just plain wrong, it invokes bad feelings in my brain... and in my pants >.> I can't help myself! Don't judge me!

I wear short stuff sometimes. The rule with my foster parents is that if my arms are fully extended by my sides, the hem of the dress or shorts has to be past my finger tips.

Try it out. It's a pretty good indicator.

The funny thing is they dress that way to get attention off guys, who give it to them 'cos they think there easy.

I prefer girls who wear a normal t shirt and jeans, if shes showing a bit of cleavage and half of her knees then I am still quite interested, anything shorter and I think there a little easy. I think a nice flowing dress is alot sexier than a girl in a bikini.

Also the new trend of nothing below the waist except tights and shoes is annoying me, girls must feel like they have nothing on dressed like that.

I was watching a programme were a 13 year old girl was wearing a dress that showed her knickers if she bent over even slightly, it then went straight up the front (no back) covered her boobs (or lack of) and went round her neck ... that was it and her mum let her go out to clubs like that.

My opinion on the matter is entirely aesthetic. I dislike the -really- short skirts that look pulled taut around the thighs. It just doesn't appeal. However, I have some pretty short skirts that look flowy and summery, and I'm fond of them. Beyond that, I couldn't care less if people went naked. It's their expression, let them express it. Don't like it? Nobody is forcing you into it.

Also, stop bugging me about how I don't wear shorts. It's not because I don't like my legs, it's not because my legs are hairy, I just DON'T LIKE SHORTS.
