What kind of ants are we talking about? Are they normal ants, or are they something like jump-jacks? We get those in Australia - they're about an inch long, mean as anything, will chase just about anything, they jump (hence the name) and as well as a mean bite, they sting like a wasp except more painful. I'm not making them up - wikipedia them if you don't believe me.
If it is jump-jacks (or a similar mega-ant species - we get a few different types here, the jump-jacks aren't the largest, but they're the meanest), then none of the things mentioned here will work: you'll need to call in a professional exterminator (who will probably fumigate the place).
If they're normal ants, you can get specialist baits for them. Forget anything like firecrackers or insect spray - at best you'll make them waste time digging deeper or rebuilding their nest. You certainly won't wipe them out, and probably won't even get near the queen, let alone kill both the queen and all jnr queens (the ones that will turn into queens if the queen dies). The idea with ant baits is that the ants themselves take it back into the hives, poisoning the rest of the ants. That's you're best bet short of getting a professional. But if you want to be sure, get a pro in, and make sure it is someone who guarantees their work (in case they don't get them properly the first time).
