How would you define a 'satisfying' weapon?

I think its worth pointing out here that the satisfaction of a weapon only really half comes from the weapon itself. I say that the real satisfaction of a weapon comes from who / what you use it on, and the effect it has on your unfortunate victim...see also the cerebral bore from Turok, the Rocket Launcher from Fallout, and the Chainsaw from Gears of War

After playing some Team Fortress 2 today and unlocking the flare gun for the Pyro I realized that it was very satisfying to shoot.

Perhaps it's the sound it makes on launch, the arc that it travels, or the panic it causes. By no means is it the most effective TF2 weapon, but to me it is extremely satisfying. I remember from my days of bf2 that the M203 grenade launcher also was very satisfying even after they nerfed it.

What makes game weapons satisfying to you?

The Sound is very important. A realistic flow of animations: the shot, the flash, the projectile (if slow enough to be seen) and the impact. All are important. Plus how unique it feels. Never felt anything like the Gravity Gun and I consider that one of the best guns in a game.

Yeah I think it's pretty much a combination of everything; aesthetically pleasing design (accuracy and superpseudosepiabumpmapping be damned), a nice solid noise, and an animation that makes you feel like there's power behind it. I really liked the spiker in halo 3; no reason, it wasn't that great, but it was fucking satisfying to melee someone with a gun shaped like a knife. The lancer in Gears of War or the Spartan Laser, though, both should have felt like very heavy, satisfying weapons, and both failed.
I think violating the set status quo helps too. If this is a game centered around silent sniper work, and suddenly you get a shotgun that can paint the walls with people, it feels jarring and satisfying.

Realistic reload animation is a must. I remember nearly creaming myself when first playing Perfect Dark on the N64 seeing that Goldeneye consisted of the gun being lowered off screen and then back up.

The sound of a gun is really important for the satisfaction i get. I just love it when I shoot something and it makes a powerfull sound, like the berret in cod4.

i personally just like the sound and effect of a grenade launcher, the entire: shmoop!.......BOOM! effect is hilarious. how the other players know and say "we're screwed."

it also has to do with a guns feel and preference, semi-auto or automatic or both make or break a gun

I love firing a silenced weapon. It's just the feel, sound (or lack of) mixed with my inner desire to be a ninja.

Well some times semi-auto works best. Like when you pin baddies to the wall by your big massive erection, I mean tree!

When I first got it, I had the exact same reaction. Before the gates opened I would just shoot it over and over again into the air for about a week. That was when I realized the shotgun was needed to get the 'combined fire' acheivment so I switched back...

if it's supposed to be a real weapon, i like it when they get the proper loading procedures, sounds, flash patterns, and i love to see the action (or slide) spit casings!

if it's a fictional weapon, i would like to see it with lots of cool secondary functions or quirks-- as if the good Perfect Dark had melded with rachet and clank. then again that would be something like timesplitters 2, and that was the Awesomesauce on a Kick-ass burger, on a Bitchin bun with a side of Nifty fries and Cool-slaw.

.... um yeah, i'm going to go get lunch now.

One way is to use lots of bass. It's got to feel "mighty", or at least visceral, and plenty of bass in the sound effects adds "thump" to it. A little "recoil" vibration in your controller (if in use) helps too.

Case in point; the Halo 2 SMG was an object of ridicule, whereas the Halo 3 SMG now rocks to use even though stat-wise it's almost identical... the only changes are to the sound (much more bass, and sharper too) and reduction in the "climb".

Another way is to add anticipation of impending doom; the laser-guided missile in HL2 and the SPARTAN Laser from Halo 3 do this well.

Oh, a personal fave that always gets looked over is the Gun in FEAR that fires 9 in long metal spikes. I know it's been done in games before, but in that game, with the great graphics and slo-mo,... it never felt so good.

If you get a good shot, the presentation of it can be fun as well. Stranglehold is a mediocre title, but who didn't have fun with some of the slo-mo shots... you know what I'm talking about, don't lie.

Something that will cause blood to go everywhere. A good example is the torque bow from Gears of War, you stick an arrow in somebody, sit back and watch the fireworks.

I like the physics a weapon uses in a gaming engine. I loved Crysis But the Tac Nuke launcher was dissapointing because of no lasting damage. It was still really cool to shoot.

I like guns that are incredibly powerful. Things like huge Gatling guns and the mini-nuke launcher that's going to be in Fallout 3

Shurikens and lightning.

No, really.

I tend to use lasers if a game has them. Something about the "SHKIZZRRRT" sound most of them make is just awesome.

Definitely the sound and (for me) how irritating it is to other people when they are killed by the weapon. Take, for example, the claymore mine in CoD4. It is one of the few weapons that actually lets you know your fucked before it kills you by making the loud clicking noise. And I know it pissed me off whenever I was killed by one.
