How would you define a 'satisfying' weapon?

I like guns that are incredibly powerful. Things like huge Gatling guns and the mini-nuke launcher that's going to be in Fallout 3
that's such a great concept! a nuclear slingshot.... wow lol

There's probably something Freudian in it, but the Penetrator in F.E.A.R. was a really satisfying weapon. Something about pinning enemies makes me feel quite Olympian.

THAT's what it's called. Great gun.

Also, the guns in RE4 are NICE. I LOVE the reload animations, my fave is the RED9,.. I love the reload clip, push, flick out pin, *ting* and back at it.

For me it's the way the gun sounds when you fire. I love the nice satisfying "Cracka-thud" of a well SFX'd shotgun, or the sharp cracka-snap of a pistol, or the harsh rat-tat-tat's of a good SMG. I just LOVE gun noises in games, I don't know why.

I can't believe I'm about to tell a mod to use the search function [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.62898#536995]!

It's like I divided by 0 or something.

For all it's flaws, I really liked the weapons in Ninja Gaiden 2. My favorites were the scythe, the claws, and the spiked ball on a chain (I refuse to type the technical names).

They all had their own style, but each resonated with me really well. The Scythe for its spinning "Believe me, you *don't* want this to hit you" look, and the way it felt cutting through swaths of fiends with it. The claws for their precision and easy control, especially in one on one "I'ma hit you ten times before you can blink" sort of situations. The ball on a chain for the "Whirling dervish of death" charged move you could do, which could take out a room if you did it right.

Satisfaction comes with the difficulty/skill of accomplishing a task. None of these weapons would be very satisfying if you just shot the side of a barn all day. But useing these weapons for optimal effect is satisfying. With that in mind I say the Battle Ground's (revolutionary war HL2 mod) Jager Rifle is very satisfying to kill with.

Any weapon that can imitate an emotion is brilliant, it depends how you're wired or what mood you're in, I suppose.
For me, a bolt action sniper rifle is the best (like the DSR-1), you get that one loud hit, if you miss its a different story. Especially brilliant if they see you a split second before, but can't do anything about it.
Unbeatable with good sound effects, when you clear the chamber (chiunk cheink) and see the single shell eject and clatter on the floor.
Masterpiece!

My inner badass is saying dual-wielding pistols simply because there small compact and if any game decides to give you the option to use them they will always be great.

But besides that I love weapons that most people wouldn't think of using (Dead Rising is a prime example). And most of all something that isn't around as much today based on increasing realistic games is the ultimate weapon, spell, or whatever.

Lastly I love just unique weapons Vincent Valentine's Cerberus to Exploding Sheep in Worms if it's unique and fun to use I will play with it.

Closing words, would you rather play with twenty kinds of machine guns or Voldo from Soul Calibur

There are various ways for a gun to be satisfying;

1. If the gun does something completely original. See the Groovatron or the Sheepinator or the Gravity Gun.

2. If the gun makes a loud boom followed by blood splattering everywhere. See the Torque Bow.

3. If the gun emits a large "FUCK YOU" beam/device/bullet(s)/anything else at the enemy, thus resulting in you yelling "FUCK YOU *****" at the enemy. See the Lancer, the BFG9000, R.H.I.N.O (I think that's how it's spelled?)

4. If the gun is a very weak gun and you killed someone with it. See basic Pistols/Handguns

5. If the gun has a badass name. See the Groovatron, BFG9000, The Splicer, ect...

6. If the gun is just awesome to shoot even once. See #3

I could go on about what makes a gun satisfying, but I can only think of 6.

A good weapon in my books would have to take a lot of skill to use (so achieveing kills with it is actually impressive) and it would definatly have to look cool and make you look badass in the process, so something like a chainsaw katana or a 4-barrelled shotgun that fires either acid bullets or a minigun that fires short-range radiation (crispy).

Bad examples that are not cool weapons are: rocket launchers (unless its Unreal), sniper rifles, sticky bomb guns (Turok), energy sword/ gravity hammer (Halo) and grenades of all descriptions.

To date, my shooter experience par excellence is the act of taking down a Zombine with a cinder block fired from the gravity gun.

Why? Because it's an example of precision being rewarded with the ability to take down a formidable foe with a single shot. I'm as much a fan of the one-shot as I am a hater of underpowered automatic weapons--but a truly satisfying one-shot is one that you have to work for.

That, I suppose, is why I prefer the conventional grav gun to its beefier blue sibling. It demands finesse and rewards it with some truly visceral kills.

I actually think that the game "The Ship" had some of the most satisfying weapons I can think of. The way that they made most weapons melee, so that when you actually got a gun, it seemed amazingly powerful. And also the syringe, with which you could poison someone, and it took a long time for them to die, running around helplessly.

I think that what makes a weapon satisfying is the combination of the sound it makes, the effect that firing has on the gun (recoil, reloading, etc.) and the effect it has on whoever or whatever it was shot at.

Ammo is definately important, shooting stuff like saw blades,or shurikens and lightning are cool, but what sad ammo DOES to your target is even better, dismemberment, decapitation, mind control, and corpse animation are all fun stuff. The appearance also counts, varying degrees of size, shininess and greneral impressiveness are key. Melee weapons are a bit different, however. Since they don't *usually* have ammo, appearance and effect counts for more. For example, a Holy Avenger +6 with a glowing golden aura and flames coming off it that can shoot lightening and disintegrates your enemies would be epic.

Anything that makes your opponent crap their pants when they aee you coming at them is an immediate win.

I forgot about the "merge" button, could be more useful than locking.

And big deal, we make mistakes, I just thought I'd bring this thread up because I've posted so much in the previous one lol.

It was my mistake for thinking that I had an original question and not double checking.

The Quantum Singularity Gun from Empire Earth III.
Any weapon that generates a black hole that can suck in your own units if they get too close gets a seal of approval in my book!

Soul Edge's Final Form in Soulcalibur III (altough I prefer IV as a game, the new Soul Edge just looks like a sword, not a physical manifestation of pure evil.), because of the looks and the fact that it's totally cheap weapon because of 1.Stabbity from far away 2.Horozontal attack=super easy ring out 3.Soul Edge(by which I mean Soul Edge and Nightmare) is a total badass (he literally is pure evil)
