So I look up the game and the first video is called "Devil's Third is not a good video game (Wii U gameplay) ."

We're off to a good start.

Okay, so now I've watched a few gameplay videos and a cutscene or two. This looks like someone remastered a PS1/2-era budget title.

Humourless Saints Row seems about right. Well, with a more military vibe.

If I might answer with a song:

Even if there weren't other games that did that, mashing together too bland ideas doesn't make it not bland.

You complain that IGN and some other mag gave this a bad review, spoiling even the Tomonobu Itagaki ties the game has. I've not seen/read/heard those reviews. What I have seen is a bunch of game footage that makes me not want to play. You are free to feel otherwise, and it's really clear you do.

Why no discussion? It looks boring.

Why was there discussion about Duke Nukem Forever? Mostly because after a decade of development, people were meeting it with equal amounts of hype and popcorn. Why not this? Because it doesn't even have that checkered trainwreck legacy.

Look, it's okay to like mediocre things, or things other people consider bad. But was there any point but to defend a game you like and rant about games you don't that are more popular?

I really hate to say this but...the game just DIDN'T look appealing at all. It looked generic and ugly. And from the people who played it...it was mediocre at best.

I think the only reason why Nintendo helped fund the game had nothing to do with thinking it was gonna be any sort of success, but has a lot to do with the underlying scheme of building good will with third party devs in Japan so they would be more willing to make games on their consoles with a no strings attached to the studio.

It's just good will building, and naturally those same studios will end up coming back and making more games for them because 'hey, they funded my game when I was in the shitter so they tight'.

It had a troubled development. It's switched engine twice, and was supposed to come out last generation. Edge gave it a 3, claiming that the combination of shooter and melee play failed badly, the AI was stupid, and the plot was terrible. They also said that at one point they shot a bad guy in cover in the leg, and his head exploded.

So... Why would I talk about it? It doesn't sound like something to be discussed in detail; ignoring it and hoping those involved move on to better things would be the polite option. I certainly don't intend to play it.

EDIT: An amazing thing occurred to me. I don't just have better games to play. I don't just have better Wii-U games to play (and yes, I own an Wii-U.) I have better M-rated Wii-U games to play, and that's a pretty narrow company.

I just have one question on this subject: WHERE WERE THE BLOODY TV ADS?? I mean, Bayonetta 2 got some, so why not Devil's Third? Now, I got to be honest, I don't give a fuck what the reviews think of the game otherwise I would not have bought Lollipop Chainsaw, for example... But, the fact that there weren't any TV ads for this game, let alone seeing YT ads for it, just pisses me off in a online sort of way instead of an offline sort of way... (There is a difference between the two... :p)

With that said, just like with Sonic 06 beforehand, I want to play this game myself just to see why anyone's barely talking about it, let alone not speaking that positive about it in general...

Speaking as a Ninja Gaiden fan, I'd imagine we aren't all over it because Ninja gaiden fans are fans of Ninja Gaiden not just fans of anything Itagaki makes. That, and Ninja Gaiden has been either absent or sucking for years now, so most NG fans have moved on to being fans of Bayonetta.

Not to mention, NG fans are fans of that style of game, i.e. fast-paced melee combo combat, not cover based shooting, even if you do mix in melee, it's not really what NG fans are looking for, hence why a lot of NG fans are now Bayonetta fans.

Finally, NG is 11 years old at this point, it got one decent sequel that wasn't as good as the original, a ton of director's cut rereleases and a third game that sucked badly; all making for a history that isn't going to lend a lot of hype to the guy that made it. That and this games delays have likely killed a good portion of any potential hype as well.

As for the game itself, gameplay videos look janky and mediocre for combat (especially compared to the butter smooth likes of NG and Bayonetta), graphics look dated even for the WiiU, and being on the WiiU is going to kill a lot of the enthusiasm anyway. Even the fantastic Bayonetta 2 sold disappointingly because the WiiU just doesn't move units outside of first party Nintendo games, a lot of people that are fans of these types of games don't own a WiiU. If Bayonetta 2's awesome NG style combat couldn't move consoles, a dated looking hybrid action game isn't going to do it either.

Overall, There's just too many far superior games released in the last couple of years for a game that was originally shown in 2010 to be able to compete with them. It doesn't look terrible, just nothing there really appeals to me as a fan of both cover based shooters and fast paced combo-heavy action beat-em-ups. Maybe there's a way to mix the two to create an awesome hybrid that will spawn imitators for years to come, this game is not going to be the one to do it.

Ninja Gaiden is actually a rather slower, more defensive game. It wasn't until NG2 that the combat went bananas with fast paced offense all the time, which is why it was not as well received.

Ninja Gaiden is about as fast paced as God of War.

OP: No one is discussing it because it is not an interesting game, or a particularly good one. If you find it fun, then sweet, everyone has their own tastes. Just like how I love the Mortal Kombat movie :)

I don't own a Wii U and...despite the ever-present lure of squidgirls...I currently have no intention of buying one.

That's really about it. I'm not worried about mainstream reviewers.

They tend to shit on anything niche and vigorously fellate anything with a budget big enough to trump their gag reflex, so why bother?

Never heard of it until now. Also, I don't have and never will have a Wii U, so pretty much don't care(there's only one game for the Wii/Wii U I actually want and that's not enough for me to invest in the system).

Just to be clear I am not complaining about the bad reviews at all. I am just baffled that everybody is falling in line. And how much it is being ignored. Take the deadpool game mentioned in an earlier post. That game had bad reviews but had lots of positive voices popping up on youtube and elsewhere. Check out dodgers review its pretty hilarious. And it is by no means a good game. It jas decent humor. But the gameplay is if anything worse than DT. The batman style combat feels a little lazy in comparison. And DT hits the trademark Itagaki tone just like deadpool does deadpool. Both are arguably a little tasteless. But only one gets talked about. But i get it, folks have made up their minds its a bad game. And Gaiden fans have moved over to platinum.

Btw, i like NGS2 best in the series, but thats me. Amd i found razors edge not to be a bad game. there are actually a lot of the old levels in the challenges. and, i love bayonetta although I will never be into the dmc style rank thing but I really enjoy the games. But bayonetta doesnt scratch an NG itch. MGR:R perhaps. An intelligent discourse of why we've moved on might help eith team ninja or itagaki come up with the next great game...

The game isn't even out in North American until December, so most of us haven't had a chance to even buy it. Not to mention the fact that the game has been in development hell for years now.

I can't speak for the whole of the internet, but your hissy fit is really a turn off for the game. The way you present yourself and the game is an embarrassment. I don't know who Tomonobu Itagaki is. I don't care about Ninja Gaiden Black. Is this game among the best experiences I can have with video games? No!? Then I really have no reason to discuss a game I haven't played from a developer I haven't heard of and a director that made a game that a lot of people like from a decade ago. Dude looks like the Japanese John Romero and he seems to make games the same way.

I noticed it would be released in September, where I live (about these times).
Did some quick looking, combat looked fun with a combined melee and shooting. Like a generic hack n slash with some guns thrown in.
Then I looked at a few reviews on youtube and the two I watched both said the combat wasn't smooth, in anyway, and quite bad. So that put me of a little, wasn't going to pay full price anyway, but if I find it on sale someday it will most likely make my catalogue.
I liked RedSteel (both) on the Wii and this seems similar to those.

Nobody's "falling in line." We're just not interested.

Well, no, the combat is actually fine in that game and looks it in the video. This doesn't even look like that.

But Deadpool had character. This has none.

And DT hits the trademark Itagaki tone just like deadpool does deadpool.
Even Gaiden fans disagree.

But i get it, folks have made up their minds its a bad game.
If you get it, why are you posting about people "falling in line" and other such bull?

It seems like you got your answer, but you don't like it. Why? Does anyone else's enjoyment of this game impact your own?

I kinda assumed most people were ignoring it because it was critically panned. I don't tend to touch games that get less than a 70 on metacritic. Call me simplistic but there are a lotta games out there.

Well I think its mostly that its a game on a platform few people own in a genre that is not everyone's cup of tea. Then factor in that its helmed by the guy who also made DOA and that both word of mouth as well as most reviews tend to be "meh" and you wind up with a game that flies mostly under the radar. There is no conspiracy, no one from Tecmo is giving away life-sized body pillows of your favourite DOA character to ignore Devil's Third. Its just not a spectacular game during a time when everyone is salivating over recent releases like MSGV (so far looking like Kojima's magnum opus unless he manages to top himself) or other upcoming releases like Fallout 4. I do understand that you find it puzzling that no one seems to have much enthusiasm about a game you love but sadly that's what's essentially happening. No one is saying anything because they have nothing to say about it, their interest in the game is basically nil.

It looks... fine? I guess? (I'm trying to be charitable... it looks really bland). But that's not going to cut it on the console of Bayonetta 2.

It probably hurts a bit that a good chunk of the people who would be expected to be the target audience (North Americans) haven't had access to it, and in fact won't have access to it until December unless they import it. And with a lot of reviews going "Yo, this is shit", that reduces the number of people who might want to take that chance.

... which is sad, because I loved Ninja Gaiden Xbox and Black, and I liked 2 as well (not much of a fan of 3), so I was dead-set on jumping in headfirst into Devil's 3rd. Learning that it supposedly sucks is kinda depressing.

Edit: I watched this link for a few minutes.
https://youtu.be/uW0EHen1p1w?t=250
Oh my god that looks so bad. That scene needs to be turned into a gif.

... is this fucking Ride to Hell? What even is this. Oh my god.

Yeah, no, I'm super depressed now. I -really- wanted this to be good, and now I think the only enjoyment I'll get out of it is if the Super Best Friends Zaibatsu do an LP of it. I sure as hell ain't.

I absolutely do not love this game. I think this is where we have the big disconnect. Or rather what I completely fail to communicate. I love Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, yes. This is merely functional (nothing like that scene in the video above happened to me in the game). And yes it is borderline tasteless.

But, I don't love a lot of games, and the humor/style/etc of a lot of games doesn't resonate with me. But I still see them covered a lot more evenly.
Edit: here's a guy articulating a lot better that I have that he is still having fun with the game despite it's flaws: http://metro.co.uk/2015/09/12/devils-third-is-awful-and-i-love-it-readers-feature-5387682/

Anyhow, I think we've run the gamut here. And it well may be that a kick in the ass is exactly what the man needed.

Mods, high time to lock this thing up ;)
