That is exactly where my mental process went. What? A Dynasty Warriors' knock off cash grab? That's crazy. Then I considered the fact that Dynasty Warriors is incredibly carthartic and fun and why not get to play as a character I know and love.

I wonder how they'll add value to the game though. Dynasty Warriors has a large list of characters with various backstories and fighting styles to switch things up so I wonder how one character, even Link, can pull this off?
I seriously doubt there will only be one character. Zelda has a great roster of characters to pull from and since their fighting styles are not well defined they can be basically anything.

Well every other japanese franchise has a dynasty warrior's knock off. Guess it's time for nintendo to jump aboard.

Looks a bit dull to me though, but that's mainly because I've never liked dynasty warriors.

I'm kinda iffy about the way the models looked in that trailer. It looks like they just lifted them straight out of previous games in the series and gave them a slight HD touchup. The only characters with unique models are Link and the Hylian knights running around. I hope they give them all unique models before this game is released.

They should also make sure to include more characters besides Link. Having the chance to blow away dudes with Zelda's magic or rampage through Hylian knights as Ganondorf cannot be missed.
The models look lifted from other games because they were lifted strait from other games. This is a common practice when developing a new game of an established franchise - it makes it easier to program as your art team is create assets. They were probably touched up specifically for this trailer and are not going to be in the final game.

I can only imagine what is going through Mr Croshaw's brain right now. After years of trying to persuade NIntendo to shake up the formula for their games, they've now gone and shaken up the most solidly set of the lot. I'll be curious to see how this changes during development.
He will complain about it. It is what he does. This happens quite often. Yahtzee makes a very specific complaint, that complaint is addressed with a new entry in a franchise, and he finds a way to crap all over the new thing despite it being exactly what he asked for last time around. This time I can easily predict the shape of the complaint: "They tried to fix a stagnant series by combining it with another equally stagnant series." The only question is if he wraps this criticism in a dick joke or an ass joke.

This is how Zero Punctuation works - Yahtzee pretends to be a massive hypocrite asshole. It is the online persona that he has fostered because it is a pretty good joke that never runs out of material. Negative criticism is easy to write and funny to read/watch. At this point bitching about the big 3 is literally how he pays rent and puts food on the table. If he stopped bitching about Nintendo his livelihood would be threatened.
Uh... no his livelihood wouldn't be threatened. Mother fucker is part owner of a successful bar in Brisbane (the Mana Bar). At best Zero punctuation is extra gravy on the side.

I really like the idea, but hopefully those ugly-ass Skyward Sword bokoblins will be replaced.

I don't think Zelda has the character/locale roster to fill up a full Koei game, so either this will be a small downloadable game or some kind of discontinuous mashup pulling from all the different Zelda games (I really hope for the former).

If they kept if based solely on OoT lore but stylised the crap out of it by beefing up the size/detail of the environments to more realistic proportions and giving the different races their own armies and original officers... it could be fucking awesome. Have the factions as Hylians (led by Zelda, with Link as a high-ranking officer), Gorons (Darunia), Zoras (King Zora), Gerudo (Nabooru) and "monsters" (Ganondorf). Each faction would have a smaller roster than Wei/Wu/Shu but there would be alliances between groups in all the major large-scale battles (have the Gerudo's side with Ganondorf for the final showdown against the other three). You could even have "pre-Triforce" era battles without Link, Zelda or Ruto - back when Hyrule still had a king and Ganondorf was leader of the Gerudos. Kind of like how Wu's leader switches from Sun Jian to Sun Ce to Sun Quan over the course of their story.

There's actually enough depth in OoT alone to flesh it out into a full scale epic - especially during the years of Ganon's invasion that goes totally unwitnessed in the game (just a shame these will probably go untouched because you couldn't stick Link in there). The more I think about it the more I'm hyped to see what they do with it, but I just know I'll be let down if I get my hopes up too much. I'm betting they go the route of fan service and pull characters from all over the Zelda timeline, just because. It'll be a damn shame too.

Plus, think of all the Links you can play as.

As fun as this game looks, half of what I love about Dynasty Warriors is the fifty some odd characters you can play as.

I'll be disappointed with a roster of three or four... and even more so if Link is the only playable character.
But what if the 4-5 characters you have all played extensively different from one another and supported entirely different play styles (Imagine playing as a Goron, for example) as opposed to having 50 characters that all behave more or less the same?

The only thing I noticed was that the big Zelda reveal wasn't a Majora's Mask remake, so I'm now a sad panda.

Anyways, this looks like it has potential, but... no... Majora's Mask...

Don't worry...well get it one day...I'm sure it will come out the same day that Megaman Legends 3 and The Last Guardian will come out.

I prefer the games where all fifty people have unique move sets.

Only a couple of the DW games actual used clone move sets... and those games were the bad ones.

If the game doesn't let me play as zelda, sheik, impa, ganondorf, ganon, darunia, ruto(or maybo zora link), that leader of the gerudos whose name I can't remember, ghirahim, demise, the skullkid and vaati, then im not buying. If theyr gonna do this, do it all the way or not at all.

Edit: also each of those gotta have his or her own full campaign (and if all of those where somehow connected into a single narrative then that woul be a great plus).

Nabooru was her name. Thing is considering the options Link has I doubt we'll strapped for combat variety. He was using not only the Master Sword but also the Fire Rod and bombs.

Plus some people have noticed what appear to be not only Zelda but a couple of unique characters on the battlefield:

No doubt we'll learn more in the coming months though.

Dynasty warriors is fantastic, also add to the fact that the franchise is essentially the CoD equivalent in Japan.

Also, I'm interested in this now. This is game number 2 that makes me interested in the Wii U. If there is a third, then I'll likely get one. And I say this as someone who vehemently dislikes the entire Zelda franchise. Good job Nintendo, do more of this.
