I bought Fallout 3 a while ago on Steam, and I figured it would be a decent waste of time. However, even playing on the lowest difficulty (I'm not a WRPG person, since I grew up with Pokemon rather than Oblivion) I simply couldn't figure out what to do after leaving Vault 101. Specifically, how I should go about obtaining caps and such.

I'd really love to finish this game, but I simply don't see any reason to keep trying if it's so confusing to obtain basic things like money.

P.S. I'm trying to play as a 'neutral' character.

Edit: Changed the title to make it more representative of what I actually feel.

Uhm... I think you're doin' it wrong.

I mean, I just walked out from the vault, adventuring (doing random quests, killing random things) and I was never really hurtin' for money.

But if it helps, you can always take the perk that lets you find more loot.

I know how you feel, for me it was getting a HD tv that made the difference between Fallout being a bland mess to being a beautiful world just waiting to be explored. Just wander around for a bit til you find something fun to steal/shoot/have sex with.

I had the same problem when I first played it. Suffice to say, I just started the main story quests and after getting a house and some decent equipment I just started exploring the world, killing people etc.

Not quite sure how youre stuck on this game pal.

You pretty much walk out of the vault, keep walking till you find stuff to kill/ explore. On the way you will find quests, including the main story.

It really isnt that hard :p

You're supposed to sell the assortment of junk you find everywhere at the shop vendors to earn a bit of cash. Encumbrance is bit of an issue initially, but with time you learn what items are more cost effective to sell. Explore more, you'll find lots of stuff just lying around.

Alternatively, you pickpocket people.

Takes a while to gain momentum capital-wise, but you very soon reach a point where you have simply TOO MUCH money in your pockets.

Seriously -- go to Megaton first, then get lost. I was level 17 before I found Three Dog because I got sidetracked over and over again.

Oh, and the end game? Liberty Prime is awesome on two legs.

I'd try to watch a Fallout 3 tutorial video or a lets play video. Just see how others play and go from there.

Good luck playing a neutral character. That pretty much means you're gonna play a schizophrenic.

Anyway, if you have a decent sneak skill, stealing some stuff from Megaton and selling it might be helpful, if you're not annoyed by the negative karma it gives you.

Go to Megaton disarm the Nuke for Lucas Simms but don't ask for any money when you agree to do it. When you disarm the nuke he'll give you a house in Megaton. Now you have a base of operations.

As for money you get it the same way you do in every Bethesda open world rpg. Kill bad guys sell their stuff. Springvale Elementary which is right near where you exit the vault has some low level raiders you can take out. Just strip them down of all their weapons and armor, and when you run out of inventory space start repairing stuff. Also find and hang on to every prewar book you find you'll need them.

You should also do the Wasteland Survivor guide quest for Moira Brown in Megaton. It will net you some useful items. Always try to do the bonus optional objectives. Do the radiation one first it's the easiest. Then do the one where she sends you to minefield. Just watch out for the crazy sniper guy. He will take potshots at you the entire time you're there, plus he has this annoying habit of shooting the cars which will then explode. Anyways the place has tons of mines which you can disarm and then sell or use for the next quest at Super Duper Mart. Make sure to explore the houses completely, there are a few prewar books in them.

Eventually Moira will send you to Arlington library. You have those prewar books right? Because there you will meet a Brotherhood of Steel scribe who will buy them off you for 70-100 caps a piece.

And there you go if you do this you should have a base of operations and a nice stash of loot. To learn how to use power armor just continue doing the main quest, eventually you'll reach a point where you can learn it. If you bought the game of the year addition do the Point Look Out dlc first. The enemies there are really tough to beat at later levels. Exploration is the name of the game in Fallout 3, so explore every location you come across, you'll never know what you might find. Be sure to check out the Fallout Nexus if you bought the PC version, there are some awesome mods.

You don't need money, and the karma shifts are pointless. Try following the main quest for a couple of objectives to take you to some new places, then just start hitting the side quests.

Do what you want.

Yeah that's true, you don't really need to buy stuff for the most part, you can get all that you need by exploring and scavenging.

Seriously, just roam the wasteland.
Explore, but still be cautious during those first few hours of the game.
You'll find something, trust me...

After leaving the Vault you should go to Megaton, which you should be directed to. From the entrance if you head right and stay near the top you'll find a place called Craterside Supply, the proprietor has a series of quests that are excellent for a new player: you'll get some good starting equipment, some caps, and be sent to some nearby locations.

You sound like one of my friends. He didn't like Grand Theft Auto because he didn't "get" what to do with free roaming. The idea is to make your own fun and adventure. Seriously, there is absolutely tonnes to do in the game without even touching the main story.

I really don't recommend playing RPG's if you prefer to be told what to do every 5 minutes... unless it's a Bioware RPG where talking to a companion counts as a "quest".

go to the large town with a robot at the front, then talk to people..that is the basics from there you just do what ever you want..also money comes from killing and looting, its a very simple system

Same happened to me the first time i tried it, i arrived at megaton and whatever quests i could find i didn`t have enough skill points for them so i got frustrated and quit.
Just roam the wasteland until you get the hang of it, theres a lot of interesting side quests and places, like 'the republic of dave'.

Go south from the vault untill you see a teddy in a shopping trolly. Take said teddy and you'll discover something very, very awesome.

My advice is to sell cigarettes and assorted alcholic beverages. As well as chems like Med-X and Psycho. The booze and those two chems are addictive so dont use them, because it is like a hundred caps to get detoxed.
EDIT: Dont bother with beer it weighs like 1 pound and is only worth 2 caps wheras vodka weighs 1 pound and is worth like 20 caps.
