Steam. There's also a lot of games that just wouldn't be the same with controls ported to console controllers. There's also nigh endless backwards and sideways compatibility. (I have an N64 emulator myself, and plenty of people have emulators for almost every other console out there). It's probably easier to develop for computers as opposed to consoles as well, so you get more indie titles. (Jesus, look at the amount of flash games out there) Yeah, big budget game companies tend to overlook us or throw us a game as an afternote nowadays, but we get by.

The PC has the capabilities of doing everything a console can and more. It's forwards and backwards compatible and is just more flexible. You can literally do whatever you want with the games you rightfully purchased without getting blacklisted or sued. The only downfall is that the xbox and playstation servers are much more popular. The pc multiplayer community is much much smaller.

Honestly, with the graphics plateau, rise of Steam and cheaper costs of games, the biggest deterrent to PC gaming by this point... is the PC Gaming community. They aren't exactly a warm and welcoming bunch.
Being indiscriminately welcoming is how you got the LIVE community. Selectivity isn't a bad thing, or would you like to eat nutrient paste and live in cubicles? Being universally warm and welcoming is just asking for homogenization. Believe it or not, a lot of PC gamers actually put quality before quantity. That's why things like private servers exist.

Of course, the common misconception that has made the term "elitist" (meaning an awareness of belonging to the elite, or a belief in rule by the elite, NOT the exclusion of the non-elite) come to mean "intolerant" (this is the word you guys are looking for, pay attention in school kids) is that if the PC community doesn't accept you now, they never will and just hate you out of spite because of your preferences. Not true. What we hate is your attitude and stubbornness. Prove that you're willing to do what the rest of us did and spend some time doing RESEARCH. If you come into the community with an open mind, a view of honest criticism as advice instead of a personal attack, and show evidence of doing some homework instead of jumping in blind and expecting us to hold your hand through the crap you should have already known before connecting (option menus, tutorials, and google are all great ways to not look like an idiot), then we don't care how else you like to spend your time.

Unfortunately, more often than not this isn't the case, so it's not entirely our fault that we have a pretty cynical view of outsiders.

And I don't speak for all PC gamers. I use "we" to refer to myself and others that share my views. Not all PC gamers are like me.

i wish they where =]
i'm a pc gamer, but i also own all current and past consoles why ? because sometimes i like to sit back and use a controller and sometimes i cant be bothered switching my pc on out of pure lazyness after work. BUT one thing i don't think any pc gamers is elitists or intolerant, sure we mock console gamers, but in turn they mock us back. and it really gets me how people have the nerve to tell us to "grow up" or "stop thinking you are so great" when its not that at all, its a feeling of accomplishment when you've just built your own rig, or when you've spent hours researching possible causes because your machine is on the fritz. nothing wrong with being proud of your pc or proud of your chosen type of gaming, in the same way there is nothing wrong with being proud of your heritage or being proud of your color... i remember the first time i played duke nukem 3d on a computer that could hardly handle it at the time and i would assume many current pc gamers experienced this and at the time aspired to HAVE a better computer the first thing they thought wasnt, "fuck it, lets go mock console gamers". just dont look at us all like we are a bunch of stuck up fools, i for one usually offer my assistance to newcomers but only if they arent just instantly choosing the easy way out, if all else fails ask. just dont ask if you havent even tried yet.

Also : Spelling mistakes, many of them. Grammar nazis ! ahoy !

Fan mods alone are the reason I look for a PC version of any game I want first.

Consoles just don't have anything close.

well through the past I think PC gaming, that is to say the best PC gaming has to offer has always been awsome (I wont say always better than consoles because the games themselfs can often be very different)

and if you think about PC's were better with graphics and allowed for more sophisticated gameplay especially in regards to RTS, we had some truly awsome games

Diablo
Deus ex
Half life
Dungeon keeper (and all kids of awsome hilarious games from those guys at bullfrog)
fallout

really the list goes on and on, basically a PC could do what a console does but better

BUT nowdays to me other than mouse and keyboard and better online suport there isnt really a difference between owning a pc or console, its all console focused now

most games on PC are console ports anway, I think this is making some of the PC players alittle mad and prone to screaming "dumbification!!!!" at certain games which I will not mention

anyway I still have my PC and I game on it because it works for me (lap portability!!!)

I like it because playing games is only a fraction of what it does.

I play on all the consoles and have a great gaming PC so you suck it!

Anyway, most computer games have better graphic options, well more options in general. Also, I find FPS and RTS games are sooo much better with the mouse and keyboard, a lot easier to move around. Basically, you can do and play anything on the PC if you experiment.

PC is a lot more flexible in the "WHAT YOU WANT" department, pretty much is a genie lamp most everything you desire it can do, is more expensive (a decent GPU alone costs as much as a complete console and it will just give you console graphics or slightly better than a console assuming you have a kick ass rig to back it up, not because it CANT give better graphics, just because game developers for some years now dont take the time to really push PCs except the first crysis) also it needs a lot more of technical know how to set up and play, lets face it any caveman whit an IQ of 40 can put a disc in a 360 grab a controller and play, but put that same person in front of a PC and ask him to INSTALL a game configure it and run it and is a completely different story. Also is the matter of exclusive game PCs seems to been running thin on them whit the exception of certain genres (MMOs and Strategy)

Consoles are the dumb cousins of PCs dirt cheap (one small investmente last 5 years) no installing, no technical know how required, no tweaking, no putting more money into it every year, and graphics are pretty good where they stand right now whit 4 year old technology, you plug them in your big ass tv and sit back and PLAY, also console exclusive games in the last few years have gotten REAL good and there are a LOT of them especcially if you own all 3 consoles (which right now is cheaper than a PC that can run crisys on ultra max at 1080p 60fps)

So yes... it boils down to the difference between the elitist intelligent person and the average joe that just want to play COD online, dont take it bad, i have a very good PC, and a PS3, X360, WII, DS, and PSP i play them all, great exclusive games on all of them but PC gamers have to stop looking down on console only players because theyr having too much fun to care anymore, if you cant beat them join them and enjoy the goodness on both sides of the fence, i know i did, and trust me if your a PC only player the first time you take a controller and play a FPS match online youll gain a whole new level of respect for these players (it takes a completely different set of skill to play FPS whit a controller, whit a mouse is second nature)

PC Gamers and Console Gamers have been locked in this debate for how long?
People need to learn to be like me and some others when it comes to this, be a joint gamer and admit that Handheld, PC, and Console all have advantages and disadvantages all of which create a balance which equals everything out
This fine fellow speaks the truth.

Unfortunately, console "gamers" and pc "gamers" lack the ability to realize such a thing, and thus think their platform of choice is "superior" when indeed no platform is superior. It's all a matter of personal preference, convenience, and/or price (despite what some might say, yes price is a factor in the PC vs. Console debate).

yeah. the modding also plays into the backwards compatibility.
For instance, i just found an old copy of Worms World Party. thought, heck to the yes, installed (took about half a second ^_^ ), and started it up.

shortly thereafter i discovered that the colours had gone all funny (a problem with vista/7 explorer affects apparently).
one small download and install of a fan-made-fix later i was enjoying the full functionality of a game at least 10 years old. on a brand new 64 bit rig.

and i haven't even touched on emulators. a vast and varied library of videogames past is open to all who care to look.

Modding communities, improved customization, and at this point in the console generation, graphics that blow anything the 360 and PS3 can do out of the water. Mouse and Keyboard is significantly better for a couple genres as well, RTS being the obvious example.

Comes down to personal preference I guess, same with any console. Does it do what you need it to do, at a price that you are willing to pay? If you don't see anything good about the PC, then you don't have to game on it. Your friends who do play on it simply see something in it that you don't.

If you are wondering WHY some people actually prefer it, that can be hard to answer. People like it for different reasons: some like it because many games can be easily modified, some people like the multi-player server structure better than on a console, some people like the graphics they can push out of it.

Sigh, we get this topic of discussion all the time on just about every forum I frequent. Instead of me trying to argue why PC's are far superior to Consoles, this time I'm just going leave this list of the postives of each machine here and let you draw your own conclusions.

PC Gaming:

+ Cheaper Games:

New retail games being 10-20 AUD cheaper on release and Steam offering vast discounts.

+ Greater Digital Distribution:

Steam. Is there really anything more to say? It's smoother and cheaper.

+ Greater Performance:

Even on older PCs, this is still the case. The idea a PC requires upgrading yearly is bollocks.

+ Modding:

This has increased the life span of games like Morrowind or Oblivion by a ridiculous amount.

+ Better Controls:

Yeah, I said it. Mouse and Keyboard combination will always give superior control then a Console Controller.

+ Greater Range of Control Input:

Joysticks, Console Controllers, Mouse and Keyboard - practically anything out on the market can be used in a PC, thus rendering the "Controllers and better than Mouse and Keyboard thus Consoles are better" debate false.

+ Versatility:

A PC is not just a gaming machine. For those who do not require mobility for work a PC is just as adequate. It can also be used for an innumerable number of other non-game related uses that a console can't.

+ Multiple Monitors:

It's a niche, yeah, but in my Eve Online days dual monitors was a god send.

+ Larger Catalogue of Games:

PC's have a longer history of games and more independent games being produced exclusively for the PC.

+ Reliability:

I loathe having to send my consoles off to get fixed, I much prefer to be able to fix it myself and have it back online the same day rather than having to wait weeks and pay through the nose if it isn't under warranty anymore.

+ Free Online Services:

Applies only to the Xbox of course, but Xbox Live frustrates me to no end that I have to pay to play my games online.

+ Better Community:

I've never been so disgusted with a community than when I played Xbox Live for the month I had free. Despite all the shitty things I've seen the PC community do, it'll never match how vile the Console community is.

Console Gaming:

+ Lower Initial Start-up Cost:

Now the current console generation has been out for awhile the cost has dropped lower than a PC. However, this is made up on cheaper games and cheaper repairs quickly.

+ Quicker Gaming:

With a PC I've got to wait for the damn thing to install before I play it, with Consoles I just stick the disk in and play. Some days this is very attractive.

Wow just wow.
After reading the title I just want to slap everyone who uses a term "PC elitist"
Seriously, people who defend their platform from the people who don't even know a goddamn thing about it are elitist and when the PC users are bashing consoles they become self entitled PC jerks.
On topic:
The only thing special about PC is that it can do many things the consoles cannot.
The console is just a shell that needs to be shedded every time you want to keep up with the generation whereas the PC is a tower that can only keep up by adding and expanding instead of shedding.
PC gaming is costlier but to tell you the truth, anyone who has a PC doesn't use it for mainstream gaming but instead for making posts like these and just insult other people for using inferior hardware.
When you come to thing of it, the only benefit consoles have that the industry is more focused on them. If the industry moved to something else, say Iphone, consoles would die out while the PC would still flourish.

main thing that draws the line for me, graphics.
look at the difference between quality of the xbox version of dragon age 2 and the pc version, its so bad i can clearly see the difference without my glasses.

also controls are better on a pc, mice (particularly gaming mice) are far more accurate than the joy pads and the keyboards allow for an unbelievable ammount of hotkeys, particularly when using modifiers too (shift, ctrl & alt). if you want most games, except biowares games, support game pads which there are adapters so you can have a full console experience aswell as pc gaming experience.

suppose the modding thing is big too.
