Exactly! And thank you for the warm welcome! It seems that things haven't changed in regards to driving if they were making cartoons like that back then. I can say that from my experiences, driving in California is still a lot like that. (Maybe not as exaggerated though... maybe.)
I don't think it's a regional thing. I live many thousands of kilometres from California, and I've had apartments in both the city and the countryside... in my experience, it's like this anywhere, at least during certain hours of the day.
And no, people haven't changed when it comes to driving, and are not likely to. We have fancier toys than those folks a few decades ago, but the way we play is the same. :p

Well I hear drivers in USA's mid-west are fairly courteous. I didn't notice when I lived there, though I may have been too young to take note of it.

I guess all of us in the back of our heads are thinking "I'm in an SUV/Hummer/Semi-Truck/Yacht with wheels! I'm indestructible !" or "I'm driving an RX8/Corvette/Ferrari! I can dodge anything!" I guess we just don't ask the question, "What happens when an 'unstoppable' force hits an 'immovable' object?"

Dear OP. You're an arse. Simple as that.

1: "I was driving pretty fast". Don't do that. Next time you might not stop in time, and some one will end up getting hurt or maybe even killed.

2: The guy in front of you didn't just randomly come to a stop in the middle of the road. He was trying to be nice, and let some one cross the road AT A CROSSING. It's your own fault for not keeping an eye out for stuff like this.

3: When the guy gets out of his car and is thinking "what the f'ck was that about?" you're just being rude, even though the fault is yours and yours alone.

Tips of the day: Don't drive to fast, and make sure to keep room for breaking in case of random stops.

I'm sure they told you that when you took your driving lessons, but i guess you were busy being an arse that day. Like you are now.
Pretty much this.

OP, you come off (as a result of your story) as not just a bad driver, but an arrogant one. (perhaps you told the story wrong? but, you come off VERY badly)

The combination of your dangerous driving, your "meh" attitude towards your actions is pretty shocking.

Man i'm a terrible story teller.

1) i didn't know why the guy stopped when he did
2)driving pretty fast = speed limit +5ish

So what some of you are saying is that's its ok to assault someone for an insulting hand gesture?

I don't actually have that voice in my head (which sometimes makes me feel like a rarity on the road). I mean, yeah, when I've had a crappy day and then I'm held up in traffic for some reason, I do get angry; but that's one of the main things that sets us apart from animals: impulse control. It's why (if you're acquainted with the rules of conduct in society) don't honk at the pedestrian and make gestures at them.

As for the Dark Knight question:

Bottom line: No such thing as the question proposes. One party will eventually give. :p

So i was almost attacked today.
I was driving in my car pretty fast when the driver in front of me stopped at a crossing in order to let a guy cross the road. i was pissed so i honked once. the guy who was walking started yelling at me. i made a gesture for "pshh" (pretty dumb on my part i know) and the guy just flipped started running towards my car yelling for me to get out. obviously i didn't and started driving when i could but he was close enough to kick the car.

What kind of a fucked up world do we live on that someone can turn violent from a hand gesture from a guy he does not know in a car across the road.

So escapist... what do you think?
I think you completely deserved that, plus you not only din't actually get attacked, and you even din't even NEARLY get attacked saying you were in a big bloody metal car.

You then happy come and say that THATS the reason you don't want to live on this planet anymore? Starvation, murder, rape, dictatorships, wrongful imprisonment? Na, you were NEARLY attacked today.

Maybe not OK, but certainly understandable. Take it as a lesson and behave more courteously in the future, and stuff like that won't happen to you anymore.

It sounds like you were in the wrong to me.

Honking your horn? It's not done here in Australia, with the exception of when someone is sitting at a green light texting.

He attacked you because you're a dick.
Simple as that, maybe... not be a dick next time?

You can't expect people to just feel fine about an offensive gesture aimed at them.

He may of gone over board, but you aren't exactly a saint yourself.

Yes, clearly an "Insulting hand gesture" is just that, Insulting. Your actual question; Is it OK to assault someone over an insult?

No, not really. But its done, often enough and its also justifiable;
Normal nice guy + Bad day + Insult = Very angry assault worthy man.
And if you incited the assault via an insult then its your fault and unsurprising you were assaulted.

But you din't even get assaulted, not even close.

A better question would be, "Is it ok to perform an insulting hand gesture towards somebody who wasn't in the wrong?"

So seriously, you are a major asshole. The man you honked at might have overreacted to your behvaiour, but you overreacted to something you shouldn't have reacted to at all besides braking. If you do decide to leave the planet as you claim you want to then I don't think you will be missed.

I'm a cyclist. I can drive but don't own a car. I've been insulted, yelled at, almost hit by trucks and almost run off the road more times than everybody here put together. To me, the OP is just another douchebag driver who acts like a prick when he doesn't get his way. If he wants to leave his country, I'd be the first to wave him goodbye. As long as he doesn't come to mine.
Solution- fuck cars, let's all ride bikes instead!

No, it was just rude that you even TRIED to do the gesture, and your supposed to go the speed limit, so injury is reduced when you get into an accident, and he didn't assault you, he just came out of his car, you have, in no way proof that he was going to eat your jaw or shake your hand.
Also, when someone stops, be polite, their probably letting a pedestrian cross, a pedestrian to the front of a car is death, car to car is less likely death. You don't want to rush it and cause the death of a person, do you?

So, in conclusion, slow down, don't insult people on the road, you are trying to act as a blind sheep, since you never came close to assaulted. The horn is only, ONLY to be used if you have to tell someone you are there, or to tell someone to go at a green light, it isn't supposed to be used as a way to tell someone to run over the ducks at a cross section.

Eh, I've been behind a fair share of douchebag cyclists as well. Weaving in and out of cars, believing that just because they are on a bike, they have priority. Not speaking of motorcyclists, btw.

But, I live in DC. We have bike lanes now. So it happens less often. And I use the metro and walk most of the time anyway.

Bit of a dick move on your part if you ask me. What sort of a rush could you have possibly been in that you couldn't wait a minute for some guy to cross the road? Where's the common courtesy? To him, you're some guy who got pissed because some guy wanted to cross the road.

You completely deserved to be shouted at, I would do the same thing as him in his situation.
