I think the real issue here is depression completely unrelated to ethnicity/race/culture/etc. This forum is probably the least helpful place to solve your issue. Why not stop by a counselor's office? I assume you go to a school of some sort that offers such a service, I'm sure you can work your image issues out there one hour at a time.

Excuse me while I don't even bother going into racial debate.

eug stop seeing colour you have nothing to do with your ancestors I really wish people wouldn't associate themselves with there herritage so much and just live there lives with the culture that is all around them instead.

It's nice and all to appreciate where your family came from but just because your ancestors came from another country doesn't mean you have to focus your life around it esspecially if you have never even lived in that country (and no being a baby does not count)

Maybe you should realize this, most people don't let the actions of their grandfathers bother them, because YOU are set on your own path.

This. Seriously, I'm white and my ancestors didn't even come across here until the early 1900s and then the 1940s. Even if my family had a history of being slave owners or other terrible things, I am not my ancestors, I am not making those decisions.

And at this point, we KNOW for a fact that almost all cultures have done horrible things to both their neighbors and their own goddamn people.

Not in the slightest, I refuse to feel guilty about things that happened before my great grandad was so much as a sperm cell. I didn't do it, why should I feel guilty? What wrong have I commited? Having the same melanin levels of some people that did bad things? Being born in the same country as them centuries later? Piss off.
There is no way to phrase my opinion better. I refuse to feel any sort of guilt for things that people (that I have NO connection to whatsoever) did centuries before I was born just because I share a skin color with them.

Just wait about 50 years then you will be in the minority here in the United States.
Doubtful

Even if all of Mexcio transplanted themsleves into the states there would still be more whites.

(US population 308 million, 223 million of which are white, total population of Mexcio 112 million. Total 420 million of which 223 million would be white or 53%)

Well, you shouldn't actually, it's nothing for you to put much thought in, you had nothing to do with it, and can't change it. If you're grandfather was a rapist, it wouldn't make you a rapist right? There is no reason to feel ashamed of what your race have done in the past.

And hey, if that's what you're worried about, evolution is taking revenge on the white race, mostly because it's us who sit on all the money and technology in the world and don't want to share, it's making us lazy, unhealthy and just genetically bad. Give evolution a few thousand years and I guess there won't be a pure white race left, or they will atleast have become a minority. It's large scale karma, if you go around screwing everyone over you will end up badly, person or race, just take the ancient romans as an example, they took over half the world, but their greed led to their downfall.

So you can do three things, 1. don't care or worry about it 2. be depressed over it for the rest of your life 3. be aware of it, and try and be a better person, charity? Anything. However, you don't want to be depressed about it, that's your problem right? So just live with it, get over it I say! How? Well take up a new hobby, pursue love, I recommend painting, helps me when I'm feeling down. And you're a girl? Maybe just give it a cry? Just express your emotions in some way, paint, write or do, whatever you do, just make sure you get over it, get past the bad thoughts and emotions.

((Forward: I'm not flame bating, I'm not trolling...This a a real opinion that I carry in my mind. I've seen some really good debates about race and culture here. I thought I'd bring my own feelings to the table.))

I do. I hate it. I hate that North American white culture is so shallow and stupid. I hate that my very existence represents all the horrible things that were done to the superior, and noble native peoples of this land (and other amazing creeds and cultures as well). I hate that most likely my ancestors were the cause of so much pain, and suffering.

I hate my hazel eyes, my pale skin, and my blonde hair. I look at myself and i see a monster.

I've cried over this...and I still do sometimes.Hell part of my ongoing struggle with depression is my deep deep cultural, and racial guilt.

Yes yes I know 'Why is she saying all of this?' but what I want to know is...Am I alone in feeling this way? is anyone else as hurt and sad as I am about being white?

Also, well, what can I do to bring myself out of this? Can I bring myself out of this?

Should I?

You're turn...
Oh you're white? You've never been called a half-breed, a mongrel, a *****, a gook, or been made fun of for having slanted eyes? Awesome, good for you. Get over yourself or join a minority advocacy group. Also see a therapist more.

This. Is. Facepalm.

Here's the way I see the world: races aren't evil, people are. Yes, there have been white people who did bad things. Just like there have been Asian, Black, Hispanic, and every other race out there who have done bad things. You can't say, "Oh look, some American's once owned slaves. Therefore, every American ever is evil." You CAN say "Oh look, some American's once owned slaves. Let's try to learn from their mistakes and improve ourselves."

Another point: What has whining like this ever accomplished? Don't deny it, you are whining. Why? What do you think will happen if you complain about this on the internet? Like so many other people have said, stop whining and actually go do something. If you feel so bad about what other people did, then go start a charity or something that helps minorities.

Finally, yes, I'm white. Born in America, raised there, living there currently. And I don't feel an once of guilt for it. Do I feel sorry for people who don't have the opportunites I've been given? Of course I do, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to take advantage of them. I have a chance to do something epic with my life, not because I'm white, but because I'm going to use what I've got and what I can get to make myself the best I can possibly be.

And you know what? So do you.

That or give it all away to these "superior" native races and live as you think you deserve to.
Instead of doing something stupid and useless, why don't you recognize that by an accident of your birth you're the recipient of an almost sickening amount of privilege and bias generally in your favor. Try to move past that and don't get so hung up on your white guilt. Your guilt improves nothing and generally just widens the gap to empathy with others.

Let's face it: Racism is still an issue and still runs deep, even if it's not as bad as it was before the civil liberties movement. There are plenty of insensitive comments in the thread already if you need proof of that. It's probably not possible to eliminate the social pressures that distort privilege along racial lines in our lifetime, but if no one tries to move past those feelings and convenient misconceptions then it will never be possible.

Step one. Getting over the fact that you are a white boy. Any problem your ancestors may have caused is not your fault. Just because I have German genetics does not mean I had anything to do with ANYTHING that may have happened in WW2. You are who you are, the only things you have to be guilty about is what you have done and what you have the potential to do.

Step two. Start enjoying the fact that you can have fun. If I, as a white boy, crack a racially inspired joke and the people I tell it to know its a joke we laugh. If we are in public and someone gets offended they are more than welcome to say so. That does not mean I will stop making the jokes. Just that I will tone it down so they don't have to hear what I am saying, and explain that its a joke and there was no harm intended.

Life is to short to spend time miserable. Being depressed because your white is not something to get worked up about. And hell if you still feel guilty about something you can go ahead and make a promise to yourself and the world that "I will do something to show everyone that all white people are not insane!"

Step three. Stop looking at the bad things. If you keep focusing on all the bad things that people have done over the years you will be depressed. (and stop watching the news so much they only really ever tell you the bad things that are going on) Start looking at the good things that people have done through our history and you will see that we don't go around killing every living thing we see. Just start looking and you will see "Hey that hole in the ozone layer has shrunk 15%!" and you will start to get some of your hope back.

All of these people saying "look into European culture and you'll find it's more interesting" are simply put, people who cannot appreciate American culture in itself and are perpetuating Eurocentrism. While it is true that European culture is one of the richest in the known world, that does not mean that North America is completely lacking in culture. Truthfully speaking, the Americas have an extremely rich cultural background that includes so many cultural groups that it's astounding. Americans (from both continents) have proven themselves time and time in the fields of science, literature, the visual arts, historiography, and many others. OP, if you seriously believe White-American culture is "shallow" then you are clearly ignorant and/or misinformed. Find out more about your roots before criticizing them, you just might learn to appreciate them. In fact, I'd go so far as to say, that the Spanish and English languages' best modern writers come from the New World.

Also, INB4 American-supremacist, look at my profile.

I'm British, so by your standards I should be one of the most guilt ridden people in existence.
I'm not though, because I wasn't alive during the empire, and as such I bear no responsibility for what happened then whatsoever, just as you don't bear any responsibility for your ancestors' massacre of the native Americans.
Cheer up.

Hahahahahaha.

Seriously, I don't know what I can do now. I was going to say something about inherited history being bullshit, and how the OP just probably hates people combating prejudice with prejudice with baggage attached and doesn't realize it because she "believes the hype" so to speak, but damn.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and not racist is the new racist.

My advice to you is this - Your genetic identity means only as much as you want it to. Who cares about your roots or surrounding culture.
Think of it this way - Someday, you will be part of a culture considered to be the ancestors to someone else. Your life is your opportunity to ensure that they have an ancestry to be proud of.

Look forward, not back, in other words. Define who you are via your own actions and your own ideals. Do not judge yourself by your ethnicity and ignore anyone who does. The colour of your skin, irises or hair does not hamper the endless potential that lies within you. The potential to teach, learn, lead, or accomplish whatever you put your mind to.

So don't be ashamed of what others have done to define your ethnicity - Redefine it yourself.
