To be clear I only watched the first movie, I have not read the books.

My theory is that all of this hate is not just for twilight, it just was the lucky one that made it big and thus became the target. The fantasy fans have been through a lot, (I get the best looks for reading fantasy/sci fi books)however the biggest thing we seem to hate is losing our territory. We have lost vampires and the like to romance novels as well as to cheap/bad yet popular movies. So when a core part of the fiction setting is changed so much that it is no longer the original product but it keeps the name we become defensive.

With one line of text much hate could have been avoided, "We are vampires who have evolved due to the ____ in our blood it makes us sparkle in the sun rather than die". Add a new shiny name and bam vampire fan boys have less to hate.

I personally see twilight as well as all fantasy romance books as a sort of fantasy light all the words 1/2 the core fantasy.

Come meal mate Gehenna is coming, as the elders awaken we must fear Caine?s wrath. As a Malkavian I see many things; if you play Vampire the masquerade: Bloodlines you might gain understanding into some of the vampire cult.

I saw New Moon. It was surprisingly not the worst movie I have ever seen. That title belongs to Paranormal Activity. Though I did see both with Riftrax.

EDIT: Read Let the Right One In for an idea of how to do a more personal, emotional vampire story properly. Twilight is just god awful in every way.
I'll admit I haven't read twilight, but I agree with the suggestion that all readers of vampire books should acquire Let the Right One In and read it at some point.

I really need to get round to watching the DVD at some point...
The film is really, really good. It cuts out a lot of the more 'horror' aspects of the novel though, and focuses more on the relationship between Eli and Oskar. Apart from that, it stays pretty close to the book.
Awesome - I picked it up when I saw it for about £3, because I'd enjoyed the book; I just haven't had time to watch it yet.

I'm glad you've found a book series you enjoy, and I hope you continue to embrace literature, branching out and trying new authors, genres, and styles in addition to what you already know you like.

That said, I personally loathe the Twilight series with the burning intensity of a billion suns. But I'm me, and you're you. If you like it, more power to you. :)

I'm glad somebody respectable enjoyed the book, it doesn't suit my tastes as far as vampires go.

(Cirque du Freak on the other hand? Fuck yeah.)

I have nothing against the book, but I hate the girls who want Edward to be real.

Many people also complain about the books because they are "poorly written". This is not true. What she did, is she had a specific target audience: teenage females. Knowing this, she didnt waste her time trying to write with language or themes or dialogue they wouldn't understand.
You just pissed off every female teenager I happen to know. Yes, we're just all too stupid to understand literary devices! You know what? Fuck that. Fuck it good.

I'm sorry but you fail at life people how like twilight. You guys are the reason why the last vampire movie that was decent is Daybreakers, and that wasn't even that good. So just shot your self or just don't see eclipse. Now I'm going to watch Blade 3 and Lesbian Vampire Killers. That's right they suck. then I'm going to watch Black Dynamite then Black Jesus. NO IT'S NOT OFF TOPIC you (unnecessary words).

I stopped caring about whether those books and movies were any good ages ago.

And no, I don't respect her, but I don't hate her either, I am neutral.

I used that for the heading cuz I knew it would attract attention, and prolly hatred as well. That said, almost everyone I know hates twilight because the vampires are sparkly. I like the fact that Stephanie Meyer didn't just rewrite dracula, but decided to reinterperit the legends. Why does everyone jump on the fact that she did this?v Nobody complains that the book Peeps changed the myths. Nobody complains that the Mercedes Thompson series and Alpha and omega series changed the werewolve myths. Is it just that these people are looking for some reason for thier hatred of the series?

Many people also complain about the books because they are "poorly written". This is not true. What she did, is she had a specific target audience: teenage females. Knowing this, she didnt waste her time trying to write with language or themes or dialogue they wouldn't understand. I have seen soooo many books with a good premise ruined because the author set their sights too high and was unable to write well enough to do what they tried to do. For these reasons, I respect Stephanie Meyers for being innovative, and for not trying to write a book in a way she was unable to accomplish.

Does anyone agree with me?
Ok I usually avoid these flamalicios twilight threads.

Its not because I dont like twilight, its because I've had no contact with it. Vampires are cool, but I just havnt had one of the movies pass my way / or books.

Neither have I sought them out, because I know it is a contentious topic, and many who are into vampire stuff have lotsa hate for it.

I propose then that you try, in only a few lines to writing something which will convince me to seek out the movie/book and try it.

I started reading the books once. What put me off was Bella's inexplicable hatred for her father, especially her childlike insistence not to call him dad (though to be honest, I call my mother by her first name, though it's not out of spite).

I love my parents, and have none of the hate of authority that all peers seem to have. Whenever I'm around somebody complaining about their parents, it makes me uncomfortable and, more than anything else, sad that they're unable to connect with the people it should be easiest to connect to. So that's why I didn't like Twilight.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and in terms of the film, what was up with the climatic battle? Big, epic vampire battle, then Ashley Greene shows up and rips off the bad guy's head. Took her about half a second. Did Edward not think of this?

You could write a dissertation on everything wrong with Twilight. It disregards the basic tenets of plot and story structure. It's filled to bursting with pointless and repetitive description. It misinterprets classic literature, specifically Wuthering Heights (a character study on relationships between mentally unstable people) and Romeo and Juliet (an outright satire of stupid kids doing retarded things in the name of love), then endlessly repeats those misinterpretations in lieu of depth or ideas. I could keep going for paragraphs.

But none of that matters. A series has every right to be terrible and people have every right to love it anyways. There will always be screaming fangirls. There will always be bad writers. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. I hate Twilight for a very simple reason. It idealizes obscenely unhealthy and outright abusive relationships for a bunch of impressionable young girls who don't know any better. That is something I cannot overlook in the name of respecting other people's opinions.

Ugh, I really wish Twilight didn't piss me off as much as it does. It'd be so wonderful to not care.

Also, there's nothing wrong with placing supernatural beings like vampires and werewolves in high school romance settings. It's a decent idea that could get a lot of mileage with a decent writer. The sparkling vampires don't even bother me. Meyers can do what she likes with mythology.

The sparkle thing is more of a joke reason for hating it. When people are seriously discussing why they dislike the books is because either A) The writing was awful (I have not read the books so I can neither confirm nor deny) or B) The main character is in an obviously unhealthy relationship and is being glorified for it.

Oh and Stephanie Meyer apparently thinks her work is legitimately superior to every other work ever. Claiming that she is a superior author to Shakespeare. I am gonna have to side with Shakespeare on this one Stephanie. I may not have read any of your work but I have read some of his and it is almost certainly better than your shit.

I've read the books and I support A, and you forgot C where Edward and Bell have very little personalities/character traits so anyone can insert themselves into their shoes and have their little fantasy.

Am I the only one who would be a little creeped out if some random guy broke into my house and told me "I like watching you sleep."
