I don't think the problem is that she "reinterpreted" vampires so much as "Made them superheroes with a restricted diet". Most of the twilight flak I hear isn't JUST the writing quality, but also the characters having no depth and, if moviebob is to be believed (I've only seen the first movie so I can't comment on this too accurately... Or accurately at all), doing plot relevant things soley to advance the plot with no real justification.
I've read a few extracts of the first book, found the writing appalling, though your point about target audience covers that, so the only point I'd disagree on is the choice of the word "reinterpreted". A great many men may have had to sit down and watch the movie with their girlfriends, bless their souls, in which case that might also skew their opinion. I'm not saying that Mr Patterson is a bad actor, because not even Morgan Freeman and Liam Neeson combined could make that "I'm a sparkly monster" scene anything but laughable.
