Never found use for usergroups. I thought people just pick a thread to chat in here. Theres constantly some 10k posters coming in threads to talk about themselves with their friends, even if the thread is about Turkey's political elections.

Then theres the whole forum game that turns everyone passive aggressive, baiting other users to get punished. This has been going on for years with The Escapist, too long to hope it will ever be addressed.

Otherwise, the sites looking better. Some culling was needed to stop it becoming stagnant.

See page 3 of this thread?
Yeah, pretty much the entirety of that happened.

Ayup.

Forums were friendlier and busier, the staff were a bit more personable and there was a ton of content.

RIP.
The comedy of your statement is probably limited to me. I said the same thing about the forums on a similar topic to this one, that people were friendlier, would discuss opinions vs insulting & insisting how wrong you were in a passive aggressive way or even directly...Someone quoted me insisting I was wrong that events never happened (doesn't know me either), while insulting me.

The forums always held a bit of a snobbish mentality since it was better modded, had site created content, better topics, better rules. Now everything degrades into arguments about ...the world around games and irrelevant groups vs the actual fucking games. While ontop of all this, passive aggressive insults and being called wrong on opinions.

I lurk more now than ever because I just don't have the patience for the insane arguments or the endless topics about 2 groups that will not stop being brought up daily.

I mainly just lurk, post in non-controversial threads and read articles. I like it, it's nice.

Besides, if I dig too deep in the forums I start getting headaches. Too much passive aggressiveness hurts and aggravates indigestion.

Has it been dying? I guess. But communities shift with content changes. People just don't like change.

Do people actually do that?

Because I've been accused of it multiple times and yet I know full well I've never posted something with the express intention of attracting mod-worthy responses.

I suspect people are trying to blame their own lousy impulse control on "baiting".

The topic derails always really bugged me, especially because those huge postcounts are basically evidence that those posters are in usergroups. So its like, "Why don't you guys have this conversation in there instead of filling up a solid page with an unrelated tangent?" I remember seeing a few users asking why people would get so salty with them, apparently unaware that the whole reason people were sniping was because they had a habit of wandering into threads, derailing or posting a jibe, and then complaining when people got irritated.

The forum game I don't know about though. I won't name the person although they have left now, but in what I would term the most famous case of this forum, this person had zero warnings and was apparently completely oblivious to how they came off in a conversation. This despite the fact that their attitude was known almost universally among other posters. Some people just don' realize I think.

I can only really speak as an outside observer, who's returned after a long break.

However, the elistism does seem to be a bit of an issue, the thinly veiled talk of "Crazies leaving the forum" and other stuff just screams of an insecure forum elite who aren't content to share their forums with other people.

I'm sorry, but, if you want a secret club house where only your friends can join, go make your own forum for that.

Many forums have been torn apart by infighting and bullshit. And if The Escapist joins that list, it's not great loss to me, however, I'm just an outside observer, it may mean more to you.

It's been said before, but please take this subject to PMs or usergroups. This thread is not the place for it. Thanks.
Oh? A discussion about goings on at the Escapist should be removed from a thread discussing the goings on at the Escapist, but a derail with the Witcher is fine?

This isn't a discussion of what's going on currently at the escapist. This is a discussion about a singular person and a situation that no one on the forums knows 100% about.

The discussion about The Witcher had already stopped by the time I came online, but this subject had been left open, which is why I quoted multiple people to make sure it didn't continue.

Only Strazdas had talked about it in 12 hours before you posted replying to a far earlier post that had already been responded to.

And this singular person was a mod here and the situation that has been left murky concerns how the mod was acting with regard to other forum posters. I'd say that's relevant to a thread about how the community acts.

I don't see how it's relevant considering he's no longer a member of the site. If you want more clarification about that situation you're better off asking the Staff instead of circulating more rumours without knowing which is true or false.

You know the staff's not going to say because it's their policy not to.

Besides, it's no rumor that Topaz was insulting other users while in the group. If we want to know why the Escapist seems harsh to some, there's your answer.

The forums have always been a certain level of caustic (I remember when I was new and DARED to post about getting a new badge) but its always been home. It'll be home till the hamsters stop spinning.

I just miss the friends who fade away. If I had to pick something in particular about the community I miss, I miss the days when the topic of the ongoing controversy was about cartoon ponies. Sitewise? I miss Doraleous & Associates, Jimquisition and now Feed Dump. Yahtzee is still going though and I do like going through the news/articles occasionally.

Seeing the same pug in a different costume really breaks my immersion. 9/10.
That just speaks of his range as an actor.

On topic.

Nostalgia is a tricky thing.
Partly because not only is the thing we're looking back upon from a different time, but the people present at that time were likely very different too.
The perfect mix of people and timing is nigh impossible to repeat, even more so at the one of the places which is the object of such nostalgia.

At least, that's always been my take on it after many, many years of trying to catch lightning in a bottle again regarding the perfect mmorpg.
Nothing ever felt the same as daoc.
Sometimes I'd get those wistful little moments as the experience drew close, but it was never quite the same.
I concluded eventually that it was my familiarity with the medium that was the deciding factor.

I love the escapist, though avoid certain topics.
There were forums I was more active in from way back when and there are forums I've loved more in the past.
They were things that I moved on from, in the end.
The me right now though, he likes being here.

plz what? I do not know why you are mentioning me here.
Probably the whole insisting that the Brovengers as a number of longtime users knew it is not dead.

You made a new group called "The New Brovengers" which is supposed to serve an identical purpose to what the Brovengers were supposed to be. But doing that right after the group died with a number of users who aren't exactly fans of your posting seems like a bit of...I dunno. A passive-aggressive kind of move?

I'm not going to assign much emotional attachment to usergroups or much of anything on an internet forum since I don't feel they're really all that important, but it's not hard to see why some people might be upset at you. But you don't have to care, since it's just 'their feelings.' Unless you'd maybe like a more pleasant forum environment instead of what many perceive to be a bit of a minefield by now.

I mean, you could insist that you're fighting the passive-aggressive circlejerks of a handful of old "forum elite" yourself, but I think at that point you're just doing the same thing they did with a new label.

Yeah, sure 5 years ago grass was greener, sky was bluer, water was wetter and chemtrails were more effective /sarcasm

It's called nostalgia, I know, I feel exactly the same when thinking about my high-school days.
Time's a *****, shit happens, people move on and occasionally you're in bad mood.
But it's no reason to be all mopey.

I know, I know, people like me aren't suitable replacement for [name of your favorite Escapee who left Escapist]
But this is something I can't change.
And "veterans" are stuck with us.
Sorry.

I don't know what's going on, but I'm reminded of this song for some reason...Anyway, how can you miss something that hasn't gone anywhere? Oh, you mean the Escapist on the [general] inside and not the [general] outside? Meh... Change happens, the new season of Degrassi finally changed their entire cast again, Zero Punctuation is the Citizen Kane of the Escapist, and the song I just posted exist somehow...

Other than that, as long as the site keeps going, I have no reason to miss it in general like I do with G4, for example...
