OH, and Kanokon is good. The one OVA is basically nothing but fanservice, so you might want to avoid that one.

When you say "no furry stuff" do you mean no catgirls or their non-fuzzy ilk?
That's exactly what I mean. I watched one furry anime and found it a bit odd to say the least.
If its just Ears and a Tail then it isn't a Furry
What would you call it then?

Last time I checked, regular people didn't have ears or a tail.

I must sound like an ignorant bastard at the moment.
You're discriminating against folks with animal ears, mate. But seriously, sometimes you've just got to lighten up and enjoy the silliness.

Kanokon was the one I watched, that was funny, ridiculously sexy and madder than a bucket of frogs.

Not entirely my thing, but I can see the appeal.

It's not new but I'd highly recommend 'El Hazard' OAV1 which I recently saw and it blew me away.

Blue Gender. It is cold, depressing, has a stupid ending, has robots, giant bugs, and is as straight forward as it can possibly can be. It broke the boredom for me.

I would suggest Darker Than Black. It's got a decent amount of realism, a appropriate dose of almost noir fiction, and a bunch of superpowered, emotionless "Contractors" (People who have to pay a price to use their powers, ranging from OCD type actions to breaking their own fingers, or worse).
It follows one character through a series of stories with an overarching plot that actually seems to work.
I'm only halfway through it (24 episodes and a movie, if I remember...) and I can't put it down.

watch Batman: The Animated Series.
You're assuming the two choices are mutually exclusive.

Also, another recommendation: Darker than Black. OK, there's a schoolgirl character, but she's not actually in the main cast and isn't really annoying. Lordlee would also recommend Baccano, if that hasn't been said.

Thanks to an earlier post on this very thread, I am also now watching Darker than Black. It is indeed an excellent series.

Cat-girl: A female with cat ears, a cat tail, or other feline characteristics on an otherwise human body
Generally looks like

Whereas Furries are anthropomorphised (attribution of human characteristics to non-human creatures and beings) animals
Looks like

that concludes today's lesson

My god! How could I have been so blind.

I see the difference, but they are the same in principle. I, as a non-furry type, will proceed knowing the differemce between Catgirls and Anthropomorphic characters, but tarring them both with the same brush nonetheless.

I liked Blue Gender a lot the plot felt a lot like Starship Troopers the book not the film

First series of Darker then Black was very good the second series was kinda boring

My suggestions would be:

Black Lagoon

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Hellsing: Ultimate OVA

Possibly Spice and Wolf, I wouldn't call that furry.

YOu might also want to check out Blood+. I'm in the middle of it right now. The animated movie Blood the Last Vampire was the insperation but it isn't as good (in my opinion), but the series is half decent. If you have netflix then you can watch it streaming online.

Claymore
An action anime about anime chicks who are not annoying but rather badasses (due to the fact that they're half monster).
Probably Hellsing as well.

Non less then 50 episodes unless Elfen lied is less then 20 episodes. That's not that bad is you don't mind a lot of nudity and gore.

I know this has been done before, but I am in need. I have a half-term holiday coming up and need a new anime to watch.

Required fields are:
-no more than 30 episodes
-no annoying anime chicks
-must have good character design
-no furry stuff or ridiculous fan service.
-as little filler as possible
-preferably a follow-up series that I can watch another time.

I am capable of enjoying:
-action
-mecha (as long as it is done well)
-fantasy (likewise)
-sci-fi
-romance (but only if it acts as a sub-plot)

I know I have exacting standards, but I am open to suggestions of animes outside of these guidelines as well.
my avatar should give you a pretty good idea what kinda anime i usually watch
so for my recommendation
"Clannad"
a character driven romantic comedy with heavy drama elements in the second season
-it has 48 eps (divided into two seasons)
-has many anime chicks (whether or not they are annoying is up to you)
-has excellent character design
-has SOME fan service (no furries)
-no real fillers, but divided into several arcs
-has two seasons, but you need both for the full story

has very little
-action
-no mecha at all
-fantasy
-sci-fi
-romance as a MAIN plot

its completely different from what you've asked for, and has almost none of the stuff you claim to enjoy
its not even close to what you asked for
so why am i offering this one ?
because its so fucking good that i feel confident enough to recommend it to you despite it being completely different from what you asked for

I'v already watched that. I was truly brilliant, the girls weren't annoying, the male lead wasn't a cockfart, and the end of the second season took me closer to crying than any other story in history has.

That bit where his daughter dies was one of the most heart-wrenching narrative moments I think I have ever seen.

It's good anime like that which is given a bad name by some of the other things people have suggested to me over the years.
