A man had twelve toothpicks in front of him. He took one away. Now he had nine in front of him. How is this possible?

There once was a beggar.
This begger had a younger brother.
However the beggar's brother recently passed away.
But while the beggar's brother was alive, he had no brother
How is this possible?
If you want to use legal loopholes then the beggars parent could have married the deceased persons parent which would make the deceased person the beggars younger brother in law.

Here's one that I made myself. It was originally intended to be a puzzle poem but ultimately became a straight-up riddle.

To warmth, I am the frozen blight
And I am evil to all good;
I am darkness to the light
And barren waste to grass and wood.

I'm what makes the rich turn poor;
I'm what makes the cup run dry;
I'm the source of every war
And what makes the living die.

Know that I am everywhere,
Oppressive as a tyrant's fist;
Know too that I am nowhere,
For technically I don't exist.

What am I?
is it god or possibly fear

On my way to St. Ives
I met a man with seven wives,
Each wife had seven sacks,
Each sack held seven cats,
Each cat has seven kittens,
Kittens, cats, sacks and wives,
How many were going to St. Ives?

As people have realised this is the lions, they're dead.

It's a wheelbarrow!

As has been said, all words have a double letter.

This ones a bit of a bugger isn't it? The numbers are in alphabetical order.

A ton.

Ooh, I can't resist one more. Again. Here goes:

What word contains all the letters of the alphabet?

Clue: Don't think too hard about it...
dictionary

wait no
Nope. Again, you're probably thinking too hard. Good guess, but try again.
The word Alphabet.
Dang, you're good. You keep guessing all mine! Also honorable mention to TRR!

Okay, now I'm just going to put a whole bunch on here and see how it goes:

1. Three brothers share a family sport. An endless marathon. They race every day and last the whole day long, the first of them is short and stout, the second tall and thin, the third is tiny, short and thin but he is sure to win, What are they?

2. There is a submarine that will only operate if there are exactly twenty passengers on the ship. If the first nineteen seats were taken by average sized men and the last seat was taken by a fat, overweight lady, how come the submarine sank?

3. Only one color, but not one size, stuck at the bottom, yet easily flies, present in the sun, but not in the rain doing no harm, and feeling no pain. What am I?

1. Hands on a clock.

2. Because that's what submarines are designed to do.

3. A shadow.

The only one I'm unsure of is two.
