I will not be purchasing Skyrim.

If I remember correctly, isn't ZeniMax filing the lawsuit, not Bethesda?

Oi! NO logic or attention to detail is allowed in this argument! We're on the internet for Pete's sake!

The creative aspect of Bethesda, and the shareholder/legal aspect are two different things. Besides which, while I do think that this lawsuit is unreasonable, they *might* have a point. The very first thing that leapt to mind when I heard about this game was Elder Scrolls. That said, I was disabused of the notion very quickly, and it's hard to imagine anyone remaining mistaken about that for an extended period of time.

Mostly though, it's because I'm selfish, and Skyrim looks freakin' awesome.

Just boycotting them isn't enough. One game purchase makes no difference. A thousand makes a little difference, but not much.

Oh I'm sorry, it appears that your wrong and the guy you quoted had the exact truth of it, you just lost $1Million.

You want proof, start in the business directories try to find Bethesda legal and Bethesda development on he same page? You want further proof? Do some research into the workings of huge MNCs, the legal maguffins is out of the control of anyone related to the game making process.

But hey, I'm not saying throw away yor morals and buy the game, I'm sure Bethesda will be so hurt from the $50 loss to their revenue that they'll fire their entire legal team, and it's not like you can't watch gameplay vids of Skyrim on youtube anyway, so you wont really miss out on anything.
So your reply to my post is to say that I'm wrong, but offer no legitimate explanation for how I'm wrong?

If you buy Skyrim, that sale is at least in part helping to pay for the salaries of the executives at Bethesda's parent company who would have made the decision to go ahead with that lawsuit. The lawsuit itself directly relates to their silly attempt to protect their franchise trademark from an infringement which really doesn't exist. If someone doesn't want to support the decisions of the people running the show at Zenimax, then you don't buy the products that they either put out directly, or publish for subsidiaries. Simple as that. That's what the OP is choosing to do here.

It's not about whether or not Zenimax will really care about the loss of a $50 sale at the end of the day (though if they lost enough of them they would certainly take notice). It's about not supporting businesses who do things you disagree with morally, which is what the OP would be doing if he bought the game. Sure it's not the developers of Skyrim making the decision to take Mojang to court, but it is their bosses who are doing it. And if anyone who doesn't like what they're doing chooses to no longer support their company in any way, shape, or form, that's a valid decision based on a perfectly valid argument.

I am team Mojang. I mean they could have at least tried out the quake battle. Their is no good reason for Mojang to change it and Bethesda are just making problems that shouldn't have to be here.

Umm... good for you? Have fun not playing Skyrim while I'm off killing dragons and stabbing people in the throat with my epic sword, in SKYRIM!

[sub]We all know you'll cave after about two weeks and buy the fucker anyways. Futile boycott is futile.[/sub]

The phrase that gives all the publishers the ability to get away with whatever they want.

Why do we have aggressive DRM and online passes when no other medium does? Because gamers all seem to have the above opinion whenever a publisher doing something someone doesn't like pops up.

I've preordered Skyrim. I don't know much about the whole lawsuit against mojang, but I do think it sounds kind of idiotic. Having said that, I don't really care. If Skyrim is half as good as it's cracked up to be then I don't want to miss out.

'There is such a thing as principle.'

To everybody else,

'Thanks for posting.'
Why don't you just buy it used? That way you can still enjoy Skyrim, and Bethesda won't get any of your money.

Happy?

So Zenimax is suing Mojang on behalf of The Elder Scrolls series of games and you fools don't think the creators of The Elders Scrolls games are in any way involved.

Ridiculous! The logic is...well it just isn't there.

So if EA tried to sue Square Enix for using the word Dragon in the title of the Dragon Quest games (they wouldn't but it's a quick example) on behalf of the Dragon Age series would you say "Bioware isn't involved"?

So? Honestly, that is my question to you. Why should anything in a legal department affect your ability to play and enjoy a game? If that is how you are going to make your little stand and "not support" Bethesda then go right ahead. It isn't the developers of Skyrim which are up in arms about this, it is likely the higher ups.

Also if a name is so important to Mojang I'm sure they could come up with some sort of agreement, or even change the name. Scrolls has no definition to the game, though to be honest I haven't followed the development. They could easily come up with some other title for it and not cause a fuss.

Still, if you are going to deprive yourself from an experience that many have been waiting for, and obviously you yourself have been waiting for, simply because of a simple legal action then perhaps you aren't as big of a fan of Bethesda's titles then you thought. Plus deleting all of those things and your hard work makes it seem like your throwing a temper tantrum over something you have no control out of.

Actually I gave the exact reasons why the decisions of the legal company do not reflect or affect the decisions of the game devs and why embargoing Skyrim would achieve nothing. Did you actually even read the post or just click the quote button straight away?

I'd go back and make the exact sentences bold, but I really cba.
No, I did read that and definitely understood what you were saying. My point being that it isn't relevant. Buying Skyrim is directly supporting Zenimax: the parent company of Bethesda, and the company making the decision to go ahead and sue Mojang. If someone doesn't agree with their business decisions, then choosing not to purchase a game made by one of their subsidiaries, particularly when the lawsuit directly relates to the series that game is a part of, is a perfectly rational decision. Nothing you said makes that any less true.

And again, it's not a matter of whether or not one person choosing not to buy a game will do anything. It's simply a case of him not agreeing with the decisions of the parent company and choosing not to support them either directly, or through supporting any of their subsidiary business. I'm really not sure why you seem to have so much trouble understanding this point. Purchasing Skyrim is directly supporting both Bethesda, and the parent company which decided to sue Mojang. No, the actual people working on the game right now had nothing to do with the decision, but the people who sign their pay cheques did.

I might buy it from a bargain bin years down the road, the way I did with Morrowind and Oblivion...

Not due to the Mojang debacle (though I agree that was a pretty serious dick move on Bethesda's part), but simply because I'm not fond of Tolkien fantasy universe #893,741.

Im not a huge Elder Scroll fan. Only one i have played is Oblivion but i do love that game. That said i hope Skyrim is horrible and fails in everyway possible. I'm so sick of every single website, youtube video and everything else gaming related spammed with OMG SKYRIM!
wow you're an ass, you want a game to fail just because of advertising...here is a hint...ignore the fucking ads. and about youtube. that is a downright lie. there hasn't been enough new footage on Skyrim for Youtube to be swamped. BF3 on the other hand is going to swarm all over Youtube with beta gameplay videos

I'm not getting Skyrim, but for a different reason. I don't like that they destroyed Morrowind in the lore, so I am not so interested in this sequel. I wouldn't mind playing it on a friend's computer or xbox, but I just don't feel the same connection to the setting after this.

I actually side with Bethesda on this one.

It won't hurt Mohjang to change their WIP's project.
that makes no sense. it is completely unfair of Bethesda to sue over such a common word. ive never played Minecraft, so im not a fan of Mojang or anything, but they are a very small developer and they have done nothing wrong.
They aren't suing over the word. They are suing over the word in the context of video games. Imagine I wanted to make up a fast food chain called "Kent Fried Chicken" Fried Chicken is by far a more common word than "Scrolls", which outside of video games no one but scientists use.

A lot of people missunderstand that copyright lawsuit is not about words, but about words in a specific marketing context.

I want to start out by saying i am a huge huge fan of the Elder Scrolls series, and a huge huge fan of Bethesda in general.

Between Fallout 3, Morrowind and Oblivion, I have lost somewhere in the vicinity of 400+ hours of my life.

I am fan. I am huge fan.

And I will not be purchasing Skyrim.

I want to make it clear, I have been lusting for Skyrim since it was announced. All press I have seen looks magnificent. Everything I have heard sounds incredible. It looks like another brilliant Bethesda game that I will subsequently lose a massive portion of my life and time to.

And I will not be purchasing it.

Because of this:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.315129-Mojang-and-Bethesda-Are-Going-to-Court

I will not support a company that attempts to use lawsuits as a means of flagrant bullying and outright douchbaggery in order to crush perceived competition.

If Bethesda goes through with this utter horseshit of a frivolous lawsuit, I will no longer support Bethesda.

Even though this means I will never play Skyrim, I will no longer support Bethesda in any way.
Good for you, but I'm still getting the game, because the legal department is not the same as the development department, who are the reason I'm buying the game. Anyways it physically can't just be about the name, as anything so petty as a lawsuit over a one word name would get immediately dismissed, if not laughed out of court. There legally has to be more for this suit to hold up.

I'll 'rent' it via the pirating method; if I don't like it (And I won't, it sounds stupid that they removed most of the creation) then I'll delete it.

As for that lawsuit; it's just silly. It's like the EA, Activision, Capcom strategy now.
Sorry, what creation?
Character creation, primarily. If they're sticking to the 'lore' I keep hearing about and dreading, then all of the races from Oblivion will be cast aside so that you can be some random Dragonborn which is just a human with a spiffy name apparently.

EDIT: Waitwot? There was someone above me mentioning it, I just went with the flow. Apologies on my hand then.

I did it for New Vegas but ended up buying it anyways.
Yeh to clarify you can be all the races :3
