Bethesda has a decent reason to want Mojang to change the game's name, and it wouldn't be that hard for Mojang to change it. You know how many people would buy Scrolls thinking that it's an Elder Scrolls game? Mojang probably knew ahead of time that some people would do just that, and they probably did it on purpose. So go ahead, don't buy Skyrim. Delete all your save games. Throw your little hissy fit. I don't care.
Yeah because all Indie developers want to do is screw over big name companies instead of making games, that sounds SO legit. Seriously though it was probably just a coincidence, and Bethesda's panties tangled themselves into a knot and now they want to bully compensation and a name change out of a small developer. Who's the one over-reacting here? Not only that, but at least the name of Mojang's game actually revolves around a major game mechanic: "magic scrolls", the same reason why "Dwarfs!?" is adequately named.

Bethesda development team =/= Bethesda legal team.

You're just being close-minded.
People say this sort of thing all the time when someone chooses to not support a product based on the business decisions of higher ups in the company releasing it, but I'm calling bullshit. If he doesn't agree with their business decisions to the point that he doesn't want to support the company making them, then that's his choice, and a perfectly valid one. Even if it means not supporting talented developers who may deserve to have their work appreciated. You can't support one without supporting the other when you make a purchase.

He's made a decision to vote with his wallet and not support companies who do things he doesn't agree with. I couldn't support a person more in such an endeavour. Good on you for sticking to your principles OP.

not your personal blog, and don't really care. I play games despite the company or politics behind it, however this is not going to be an easy court case.

The thing is that EA and Activision have done a hell of a lot more to piss me off than Bethesda ever did, and if any other game company felt like they had similar ground for a lawsuit I guarantee they would have done it. Also its not like Todd Howard came to his legal offices demanding Notch's head on a platter, just saying.

you know what that is perfectly reasonable and i applaud you will to avoid such a hyped up game i know i don't have the will to do that but i think you are going to far, to stop playing games of theirs before they did this seems irrational and knee-jerk it just seems to be limiting your gaming area as the elderscolls are one of the finest examples of western rpgs it's a shame to waste games you already have.

Just because lawyers are ass**** doesn't mean we should make the game developers suffer.
It went under Bethesda's name. If Bethesda truly objected then they could have told the lawyers to knock it off and drop the case.
You want people to argue...with lawyers? good luck!
Yes. If their employer tells a lawyer to knock it off, they'll back off.
Well the developers are not the employers nor are the animators or artists or guys who do sound(whatever there called)The people who are really making the game are not in charge. these people are:
Vlatko Andonov, President
Todd Vaughn, VP Development
Pete Hines, VP PR & Marketing
Ron Seger, VP Sales
Todd Howard, Executive Producer and Game Director
Ashley Cheng, Production Director
Okay, so why didn't they stop the lawyers from suing Mojang then?
because there asses but just because the management is shit do you really want to hurt the real makers of skyrim?

OP sounds like a raging fanboy who needs to take a step back, be quiet and have a look at both sides of the argument. Mojang isn't shouting "HELP HELP I'M BEING OPRESSED" Monty Python style and certainly doesn't need you pretending it is. Think of this: I bet Notch will buy skyrim.

You being a martyr isn't going to help anything. This entire thread is based off of a complete lack of common sense. If anyone seriously thinks Bethesda will take Mojang to court over the use of the word "scrolls" in a game you are an idiot. And even if by some idiotic happening they do, do you seriously think they'll win? If so why didn't the guys who made red faction take rockstar to court over red dead revolver/redemption? You cannot copyright a single word otherwise nobody would be able to name anything anything, it is within the public domain to name your game anything you like as long as it's not a trademarked name and seeing as Mojang won't be calling this game Scrolls : Skyrim or Scrolls : Oblivion Elders, I highly doubt this is a matter even worth taking in let alone trying to become a martyr for, good sir.

Your objections are boring to me. I will definitely be purchasing Skyrim. Also, I am tickled pink by this lawsuit: Mojang just generally irks me.

Hehe, you sound like the 11 year olds from Serbia back when I was a kid, who protested the American bombings by refusing to buy Coca-Cola.

Right on man. Fight the power.

*sigh*

Why do so many people these days make threads just because they won't be buy a particular game?

Really, chances are that we don't care. My apologies if this comes off as sounding a little mean, I have no ill intentions towards you but really....nobody cares.

EDIT: Huh, turns out I was Ninja'd with regards to this point. Many times in fact.

Great minds and all that jazz eh? :D

And I will not be purchasing it.

Because of this:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.315129-Mojang-and-Bethesda-Are-Going-to-Court
A) Old news, where have you been?
B) Notch has already stated multiple times that he does not want anyone to boycott Skyrim because of this, and that he will in fact still be buying it.
C) One person not purchasing the game will not do anything. A lot of people maybe, but this is a new Elder Scrolls game we're talking about here. People will buy it regardless.

As a general reply to everyone who said "I don't care", I retort:

'You cared enough to reply.'

As a general reply to everyone who said "you will fold", I retort:

'You might.'

As a general reply to everyone who said "your sale doesn't matter", i retort:

'There is such a thing as principle.'

To everybody else,

When we said we didn't care, we meant we don't care about the lawsuit against Mojang. Obviously we care about how silly boycotting a game is over something like this - we're trying to maintain a respectable community image here on the Escapist. Wouldn't do to let arrogance go unchecked.

As a general reply to everyone who said "you will fold", I retort:

'You might.'
Fold to what? Fold to "not buying" a game we really want? Fold to stupid boycotts?

As a general reply to everyone who said "your sale doesn't matter", i retort:

'There is such a thing as principle.'
And our primary principle is: support the hardworking developers of a company that has brought us thousands upon thousands of hours of gameplay, revel in the glorious next chapter of a series dear to our hearts, and enjoy our lives by playing games we like. Mojang is a big boy now. It can take care of itself. That's glossing over the fact that you're doing the opposite of what Notch said to do by boycotting Skyrim.

To everybody else,

'Thanks for posting.'
You're most welcome.
