the integral problem of skrym is that it gets crippled by consoles. i saw it in motion now, and it's really not that impressive as it seemed at first. obviously there had to be mighty cutbacks made in order to keep it running on the outdated current day console systems. a shame really, i don't have anything against consoles or console players, but i hate what they do to gaming, hindering it's progress technology- and gameplaywise (it all has to be controllable by 4 buttons and a thumbstick, after all)

IGN is maybe the best example of "created or inflated employment". 90% of their content has no reason to exist; no one is asking for it, no one enjoys it, and no one should read it. It needlessly fills in the gaps between the reviews that are supposed to justify the site entire, although even the reviews are fucking awful.

Anyways, as regards the actual linked "argument", Dark Souls probably will beat out Skyrim for me personally because Dark Souls will feature much more satisfying combat. I just hope they take their expository cues from Demon's Souls; I thoroughly enjoy the sparse worlds and minimalistic storytelling versus Bethesda's overlong and obvious dialogue.

Gorramit, IGN! Aside from the fact that I and probably many others see dark souls and skyrim as two quite different styles of game and therefore shouldn't be compared just as people should please, I beg of you, stop comparing space marine and gears of war, you've now probably spawned fanboys. Yep. Prepare for everything skyrim based to recieve tons of comments saying "skyrim is teh SUXXUUURS!1 Dark souls will be b3a5t! IGN SED SO, SO IT MUST BE TRUE!". And then dark souls content will get the same treatment by skyrim fanboys as retaliation, and a voila, a completely pointless fanboy war started by IGN.

IGN, I'm putting you on the wall next to bobby kotick. The wall of things that must die if gaming is to live.

We get it. Everyone loves Skyrim. We do too.

But there's another RPG experience that will steamroll into stores in a few weeks, one that will just might change the industry and the way we look at our favorite pastime. Skyrim's getting all the attention, it will probably grab most of the sales, but there's one game that has it beat in all kinds of areas. We're talking about Dark Souls.
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/119/1196353p1.html

Now i have nothing against Dark Souls. I'm sure it's a great game it could potentially be even better than Skyrim. BUt certainly not for the puerile reasoning in this article.
That's just them being contrarian. Not a month ago they were claiming Skyrim would be the greatest game ever and saying how everyone should copy what they're doing.

fixed!

also, although i dont like it, the Wii would never have been what it is on a PC... and the Wii has definitely progressed the industry in a certain direction.

1) It's IGN. F***ing IGN.
2) Isn't Dark Souls a successor/sequel to Demon's Souls, and therefore a PS3 exclusive?
3) Again, IGN.
4) I don't care, Skyrim's the fifth Elder Scrolls game and therefore your argument is invalid.

Don't you mean 16 buttons and 8 axes? Of course, that's being kind and counting the triggers as buttons when they really control Zx and Zy. So all-in-all you have a total of 14 buttons to map controls to, which is why Diablo III will never work on consoles and why Torchlight sucks on consoles. Of course, for the average cookie-cutter FPS game you don't need more than 14 buttons, heck you could get by without using any buttons, as long as all the axes are used. Of course, that's the bare minimum, and probably wouldn't be very fun.

yes obviously consoles of any kinds have progressed the industry somehow, just in a direction i would rather not have seen it progress. stagnatic graphic, simplyfied gameplay, "streamlinging"/dumping down of game franchises for easyer operation with controllers (no inventory and character progression system in bioshock as opposed to system shock 2, no prone in bad company 2, no lean in mw2...), peer-to-peer online BS, no more LAN play, pay-to-play-dlc...all stuff spawned from console gaming i'd rather have avoided making contact with pc games.

"Dark Souls spiritual predecessor Demon's Souls was heralded as one of the most challenging and epic action-RPG's on PS3"

challenging insinuated that the game actually gave you a chance >.< and I think I must've skipped the "epicness" because I couldn't get past cow pat

249 replies later - and the tears are still flowing.
Just to clarify something else - this is From Software/Atlus we are talking about here. No way in hell could they afford to bribe IGN, of all sites. Maybe Escapist though - LOOKING AT YOU, DRAGON AGE 2!

I actually agree with most of the points raised in the article, and seeing as Demons souls was an entire order of magnitude better than Oblivion (and Skyrim/Dark souls are just more polished versions of the predecessors) It looks like the same will be the case again with Dark souls and Skyrim

But GODDAMN this is the most deliciously ironic thread in the existence, and the same thing happened on IGN's boards; people calling out IGN for dark souls fanboyism because someone who has probably played both games, hasn't jumped on board the "Suck Skyrims cock" train like them and you! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

People really can't see the forest for the trees. It's like Xbox Fanbois going to a PS3-is-better-in-my-opinion article and decreeing the author nothing but a fanboi. Just, delicious, delicious, Irony.

Elder scrolls nerds, rivaled only by Blizzard nerds, are the nerdiest nerds that ever dribbled over their retainers.

I Loath Western RPG's. Read the article, I think everyone involved is braindead.

I suspect trolling for traffic on IGN's part. This entire article might as been titled "You Have Been Trolled." Since I feel like one of the few people the browse with script blockers and ad-blockers, I'm fairly certain IGN just made bank with the Ad-sense (or similar) revenue. And lets not forget the three video advertisements about sexy women below the article that are animated to move around. This was a "hello, we need money" article. Ignore it.

Skyrim will outsell darn near everything for months, then it will die off and live on in machinima videos on youtube. Dark Souls will probably sell enough to break even, and its hardcore fan base will continue to enjoy the game long after everyone forgets about it the month after it comes out.

i'm really looking forward to Dark Souls over Skyrim, but i couldn't read that article any longer without thinking i was gonna vomit in my mouth.

paid off to promote DS, i think so
EDIT: due to an earlier point raised, Fromsoftware prob couldnt afford the bribe, so it prob is just fanboyism.

I've got a feeling that Dark Souls is going to be kickass, for one reason that seems to be disappearing from games lately: It's hard as fuck. Like brain-meltingly hard. I have Demon's Souls, it's evil. And i love it.

Don't get me wrong, i love Elder Scrolls games. I own both Morrowind and Oblivion, played them to death. But i hope Dark Souls kicks ass, because if it does it will breathe new life into my love for RPGs.

all the shoulder buttons and, up to 2 face buttons... so six.
in terms of controls, i agree that for many games i dont agree with what they've done... they being developers, not consoles.
Yes, Brink on the PC has lean and they removed it on the console versions, but just look at Lost Planet 2 where even Y+LT and LT+Y do different things. These are mostly down to a decision made by a developer, as i doint recall ever using all 110 buttons on my keyboard and mouse in a single game.

you never played any complex titles from the golden age of pc games then^^ system shock 2, all the modern flight simulators, operation flashpoint, mechwarrior...not much keys left unused on the keyboard for most complex games. of course, they don't make things like that a lot anymore, since you couldn't possibly control mechwarrior 3 or arma 2 with a gamepad.
or manage inventory space in system shock 2.. combine that with the cliché twitchy xbox cod-kid that goes into a mouth-foamy seizure if it doesn't shoot something every 35 seconds, so you also have to toss out rpg-elements and character developement, and voilá, you've got yourself a bioshock.
so yeah, developers made those decisions. but they were made to accommodate for the shortcomings of consoles, and the glorious pc gaming master race has to suffer for it.

/immediate reaction to headline before reading the linked article

Top one reason Skyrim will be a critical and financial success and Dark Souls will have been forgotten about 2 months after release: I've never heard of Dark Souls until right now.

/reaction after reading the linked article

*snrk*

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh, IGN. They truly are the kings of trolling.

Fucking scumbag shills masquerading as journalists.
