There's times when I think that, speaking as a married man, that the dead are better off. At this specific point in my life, I can hardly stand to be in the same apartment as my wife, let alone in the same bed. Unfortunately for me, but fortunately for her, it's cheaper to keep her rather than trying to go through a divorce.

I think there's a mindset that a probably large group of women subscribe to that follows that exact mindset though. I also think that there are women that consider heterosexual sex between two parties who give consent and are of sound mind to be a crime punishable by death for the man. At least one of those is guaranteed to be true.

All I know is that if you don't want to get married, don't enjoy the idea of a married life, and you do so anyway? You shouldn't have gotten married in the first place and have no one to blame for your unhappiness but yourself.

Of course relationships can go sour later down the line. Things happen, people change, etc... But no one is forcing you to tie the not, and if your significant other is pushing it on you, then perhaps you're not in the right relationship.

My mom married a ragingly abusive prick who started cheating on her on her on their honey moon and told her many times the only reason why he married her was because she wouldn't put out and he wanted to know what it was like to do a virgin.

Why did she marry him you might ask. He was the first guy who showed an interest in her and she was afraid of being alone. Of this ridiculously screwed up pairing I was produced. The only good thing that came out of it was that I learned to wait for the right person and not give into fear and stupidity.

the only reason I can see to get married is that (in the USA) there is a massive tax for being single after 25. Up to $15000 in some states depending on your income level.

Jumping over the whole religious aspect of marriage saying that you're going to stay with one person for the rest of your life is wrong. (not morally wrong just incorrect.)

So you marry somebody, chances are you love them and they love you back. Am I right? And the goal of love is to keep your loved ones happy, or something. Is that close? If other people are anything like me, sex is high up on the list things that make people happy. And as far as I can tell is that marriage is just a sex exclusivity contract that says "If you fuck anybody but me I get half your shit." Another aspect of marriage that baffles me is the definition. "you live with the same person for the rest of your life." What? What if you decided to eat nothing but peanutbutter for the rest of your life. You'd get sick of it after about a week, and after a month or 2 you'd never want to see it again. And why does that sound like a good idea when you're talking about people? Familiarity breeds contempt. Don't believe me look at your parents.

The only solution I can think of to make a marriage work (and trust me I haven't thought very hard) is to keep it open an open relationship.

I concede. Though you seem to have covered 100% of the female population in your assumption, and as I subscribe to neither belief, I at least found a nice post card in the gift shop to send to my mother and all the other women I know who feel the same way as me. See below.

OTP: Marriage is personal. My personal reason for getting married is that I find it a way of expressing a devotion to a person I love. If I wasn't devoted or believed that I could remain devoted, then I wouldn't get married. It's not a matter of God or wanting a shiny rock on a shiny ring, it's what I want.

What this means is that I believe that if a person finds themselves needing outer attention, then they're either no longer devoted or were not as loved by their partner in the first place. Receiving flirtation is a form of compliment, man or woman, but returning the attention or replying by indicating your marriage and subsequently how much you suffer because of it is simply not taking responsibility for a decision that you ultimately made.

Back to you. It's not a privilege or a right. It's a choice, like having children, that requires maturity and responsibility. I would love to meet the woman you've described. It would mean I'd been written into a television show.

There's very few things in life that I absolutely cannot tolerate. I can't stand useless people. By useless people, I mean the ones that constantly procrastinate, secure in the knowledge that whatever it was that they were supposed to be doing will be done for them by someone else if they wait long enough. My wife is very good at procrastinating, or at least working at a pace so slow that she may as well not work at all.

Case in point, we had to clean our apartment from one end to the other, since we were having people over. In the time it took me to clean the bathroom, the kitchen, and the living room, she had cleaned half of the bedroom. Then, she complained that she was tired and needed to take a nap. There's times when I want to just change the locks on the front door and tell her to go live with her parents again.

"it's cheaper to keep her" ... KEEP her, FFS you married her not purchased her, she's not a chattel.

The 'case in point' ... she's clearly moving, working, slowly. She's not inspired, she's depressed. She probably didn't particularly want 'the people' over, who were probably YOUR friends, and to be friends with you they would have to suffer the same narcissistic and egocentric personality disorder you clearly have.

Perhaps you should discuss your feelings with your terrible, lazy, and procrastinating wife/property, who knows, she might opt out of pursuing any financial compensation, just to get you the FO of her life. Poor *****.

I wasn't completely clear when I posted. The "people" I mentioned were her family. Besides the people at work, I have literally no friends that live within 70 miles of our apartment. I said that it was cheaper to keep her because if I was to get divorced, I would have to take over her car payment, her monthly cell phone bill, as well as pay off her medical bills, in addition to paying her alimony. I already pay the rent, utilities, car insurance on both our cars, as well as doing all the automotive maintenance out of solely my income. She doesn't help me with any of that. We were separated for a while about a year and a half ago. Happiest 6 months of my life in recent memory. She came back to me, and I'm too soft hearted, or soft headed, depending on how you look at it, to tell her to get out. She knows how I feel already. We've discussed it, at length. She cries and says she'll start helping out around the apartment more, that she'll try and learn how to cook so that I don't have to do it when I get home after a 14 hour shift at work, how she'll do this, that and the third to actually become a functioning adult. She and I both know it's nothing but a bunch of lies and yet I sit idly by and let it happen. Not because I'm scared of being alone, I prefer it when she's not here. No, I let it happen because I don't want to have to pick up her slack because the courts forced me to. If that makes me narcissistic and egocentric then so be it. She knows that she's free to leave whenever she wants and I won't try to stop her. That's the problem. She won't leave.

She's admitted to cheating on me once, and I forgave her. I know she'll start crying if I cheated on her, and I don't like seeing people cry, no matter how much I don't like them. That's why I've been faithful all these years. Have I looked at other women? Absolutely. Have I considered cheating on my wife? I'd be lying if I said no. Have I ever cheated? No, never. I've been cheated on before by other women, and it tore my heart out. I could never do that to someone.

I guess I still have a narcissistic and egocentric personality disorder huh?
