I'm tired of playing violent games.

Minecraft is pretty tame. Other then the suicidal creepers and zombies trying to munch you for dinner, its basically violance free.

-The Sims. This series has a surprising amount of variety too. Games like Sims 2 for the PSP come across as adventure games with simulation elements. The DS and Gameboy games have interesting contained stories too.
-Adventure games. Specifically, Wallace and Gromit's Grand Adventures, Sam & Max, Myst series. I've heard that Machinarium is good, but I haven't played it yet and have no clue if its violent. Overall there are countless adventure games (and some are even good).
-Little Big Planet. I have the PSP version. It's fantastic, but I have a hard time beating it as side-scrollers don't interest me a whole lot.
-Casual Games. Diner Dash is quite fun and I enjoy most of the other Dash games as well.
-Trading Card Games. Magic The Gathering has a few newer games, I like the Yu-Gi-Oh handheld video games too. They're not violent, but they are about conflict so this is toss up.
-Harvest Moon.
-Animal Crossing.
-Super Monkey Ball.
-The Movies (a game that doesn't get enough credit, it's a fun strategy game that also lets you create your own movies).
-Theme Park games. Thrillville, SimTheme Park although that ones much older, Roller Coaster Tycoon.

I think I covered all the non-violent games I enjoy playing. xD

You keep repeating that statement, but could you explain exactly how you consider Mario and Sonic violent.. I haven't played either in years but all I can remember of them is running through the level avoiding things for the most part. Certainly you jump on things heads but that is hardly violent in the grand scheme of things.
Jumping on things heads isn't violent?
Just because something is MORE violent or because Mario looks less violent compared to modern games doesn't make Mario not violent. Also, jumping on things heads to kill them is incredibly violent, just because there isn't blood or gore doesn't change that fact (it's just more palatable because it's very cartoonish and light-hearted).

EDIT: Crap. Didn't mean to double post. Forgot to copy and edit my last post. >>

You aren't going to find many games outside the puzzle genre that have no combat or killing of any kind. It's difficult to add conflict in any other way. I can't think of any suggestions other than puzzle games.
Cogs.
Chime.
Space Chem.
VVVVVV.
Braid.

Hmm. Well there's Tetris, that's pretty much as non-violent as you can get with most games. I also found Animal Crossing to be fun, plus it has plenty of replay value. Ooh! And the Wario Ware games. Sure some of the mini-games depict a little bit of cartoon violence, but other than that a lot of the mini-games are simply weird, quirky, and mindless fun.

Oh yeah! There's also Viva Pinata. There's a little bit of violence, but it mostly involves cartoony stuff like pinatas throwing stuff like carrots and jigsaw pieces at each other. And that's only when a Pinata is mad for whatever reason. It's mostly a fun and peaceful game that involves gardening and attracting new pinatas to your garden while raising the ones you have.

The main sort of games I can think of without any violence are rhythm games, sports games (dependent on the sport I suppose) and simulation driving games.

Okay, yes, it's violent... although about as violent as most cartoons are. Hell, there are plenty of childrens cartoons that contain far more over the top violence.

A game where the gameplay, story aspects, and characters are not violent but at the same time good enough to keep your attention without being some sort of ADD machine, well. To be honest it's a bit of a thinker, you could try puzzle games like Professor Layton or you could try story-based games with no aspect of violence outside a smack to the face.

Come to think of it trying to come up with an ultra-successful game that isn't in the smallest aspect violent.

EPIC EDIT: WORLD OF GOO! If you are a real man/woman you will find a way to play that game without losing your goo to a violent death! CHALLENGE INITIATED!

Let's see, you have almost every dance and music rhythm game out there. My girlfriend and I play lots of DDR together.

Lots of indie/downloadable games. Braid is one of my favorites and is very light on violence, though you do stomp on the odd evil bunny. There's also World of Goo. I might recommend Plants vs Zombies, though that's still violent in a cartoony sort of way. And then there's Flower of course.

Adventure games are generally pretty non-violent. Telltale's stuff is well regarded, though I haven't played any of it. I can recommend the Monkey Island remakes though, if you're a fan of the genre.

There are tons of non-violent DS games. I would definitely recommend Elite Beat Agents and the Professor Layton series.

If we're talking older games, I really like the Katamari series. You may be rolling people up into massive balls and shooting them into space, but it's all in good fun.

Loco roco. I mean yeah you do have an antagonist like the Moja who will try to eat you but usually its in your best interest to avoid them because the loco rocos have no arms or legs. Actually they aren't really capable of anything because of this and you are actually controlling the planet itself who is doing all the moving around for them.

Your protagonist has no limbs and basically spends all his/her/its time eating berries and singing. And it's only form of defense is that the planet itself has to bump it into something.

If that's still too violent I have some lovely cooking games that can genuinely teach you how to prepare awesome meals. Seriously I've made the best Macaroni and cheese because of it and I learned new awesome stuff that makes me sound fancy like cheese soufflé and risotto balls.

Rune Facory: Tides of Destiny came out last week. It's basically Zelda meets Farmville.

Yeah, let that sink in.

why not play a Final Fantasy Game?

there not violent

get FF9 its my personal Fave
Oh my god. I thought I was the only person who thought FF9 was the best :D

Hooray! /foreveralonenomore

OT: I'd suggest playing something like Puzzle Quest. It's not violent (unless you count exploding gems dealing damage as "violent")

If you do, then I think maybe something like Little Big Planet. It's lots of fun and not violent (unless you count falling in a pit and dying as violent)

EDIT: KATAMARI!!!! Seriously OP. Play Katamari. PS2 ones were great! The 360 one is ok. Either way they're awesome and mindless fun :D

I would just like to ad a beginning disclaimer that I am not against violent games. Not that such will stop being from jumping me and arguing against me that I do and that's wrong, given what I've learned from my time here and how defensive people can get.

I do, while I think that all of the pro censorship, "please of think of the children" people out there are idiots. I can agree on one thing, video games do seem to depend on violence too much and too often. There's a lot of violence in movies, too. But they get more variety. It seems like video games are more violent more often than any other media. And while opposing violent video games is stupid, I do think the... ratio could be a little different.

But what I'm looking for is that exception and that smaller part of the ratio. I've been playing video games lately, and to be honest, while I like certain types of violence in video games as much as the next person, especially casting fun magic, that's a pile of fun. I'm getting a little tired of fighting stuff and I would like a break.

And so I was just wondering, other than just sparking a thread about whether violence happens too often or not, or people mentioning non-violent games that they like. I'd also like some help finding some good non-violent games to occupy my time. Because while I do like them, I'm pretty burnt out on them right now.
This actually made me stop and think. It seems like just about every game I have ever played the majority of the game has something to do with killing enemies. Be it goombas, gigantic mutant monsters, people, zombies, you name it. Although E rated games are tame, they are still focused on killing things, just no blood and gore. It is still violent.

Mario games are kinda cartoony, but still technically kinda violent.
If Mario games are violent, then Charlie Sheen has a sense of respect for women.
They're definitely generally about fighting stuff.

I'm surprised y'all are saying that, though.
Puzzle games. The Portal series and Catherine (has graphic deaths, but no fighting) being good examples.

what about Portal?
The first person perspective in it made it pretty hard for me to enjoy. Still, it's probably my most favourite first person game I've ever played. Especially Portal 2. GlaDOS and Wheatly are a riot in that.

My point is simply that it is in fact violent.
