Well..fuck. Sucks to be in America then. They better not bring these laws to the UK, censorship is a dirty, dirty word.
ACTA stands for "Anti-Counterfeit Trade Agreement" and their goal is... well... practically world domination through very oppressive copyright police.
At least those parts of the world that have internet connection.

Well I'm glad I buy songs from Amazon..sometimes <_<

Seems a bit..overzealous really. Is this brought on because they've decided (again) that piracy is killing business or are they just bored and feel like fucking with the majority of the world's online freedoms?

Cos if they think it's ruining things like musician's business, I'd love to point them in the way of Machinae Supremacy, who until very recently purposefully P2P shared their music for free, and still made loads of good songs, and money.

Then again, it's mostly the record companies who complain about lost revenue, the artists know they get a lot of income from their live gigs and merch anyway.

Oh look another paranoid nutcase conspiracy theory about how a proposed law will destroy all our rights even though it hasn't even been passed yet. Aren't assumptions fun? (protip: no they aren't)

It's all about government control, we have to stop it. Write letters to your congressmen, organize protests in the streets, do whatever you have to to stop this infringment on our rights. It's up to you, the people of the internet. Now get to it.

How in gods name can they prove whether material on my phone/laptop/mp3 etc is in breach of copywrite? I don't think customs has any power there, and I don't see how they could hope to censore things as freedom of speech is kind of in the US constitution. I wouldn't be too worried.

That proposal is several years old and it still hasn't been stopped despite massive protests. It was considered secret for several years as well. People that wanted to see the details were given a document with all the text covered in order to technically obey the law. It has been prepared in the EU. It was passed at a routine meeting for farmers and fishermen. The meeting is actually designed for small routine matters regarding fishing and farming but they maneged to pass it through there in order to make sure no one could read it and so that no one could change it. Believe me, there is something fishy brewing.

I am. Congress has the power to regulate commerce, which is technically what they're doing.

Oh, and if anyone needs me, I'll be buying weapons from Mexican drug cartels while the napalm sets.

Far from it actually. It's as a sort of wikipedia for leaked government papers that were never meant to be seen by the public. So all of their theories have at the very least some substance since they are based on nothing but government documents.

There may be some...it's a long shot but...it just might work.

Barbara! Get me...4chan!
Internet terrorists or not, 4chan's anonymous may very well be our only hope against this blatant infringement of democracy and whatnot. So I say now, "Please anonymous, you have just as much to lose as we do! Please help us stop this madness."

It just might work? Man, it must work! It's our only shot!
And after being told they're not your personal army, and possibly having it backfire on you and having them come after your PC instead, what was your next move? Asking modern day 4chan for help is pointless, they're all "newfags", meaning unhelpful, rowdy and generally stupid kids. This requires the expertise of one of the original Anon, they're like the Old Ones of the internet. We need to start tracking them down. Now.
I'll get the internet bloodhounds.

Well, I suppose the other important "not too worried" factor is that Americans rather like freedom of speech, and I don't doubt if it's compromised a great many Americans will feel it's their civic duty to pull out a gun and get shooty (as that is kind of point of the constituational right to bear arms).

And I think it's more like 95%. And 99% of all government policies passed and government-run facilities will also be failures. Because our government is crap at everything it does which does not involve strafing runs.

This sounds like a conspiracy to get people to stop using the Internet, honestly. I mean, I'd USE it when I had to, but recreational Internet use? Why bother, with all the good stuff blocked and the constant danger of being arrested for having materials somebody might have copyrighted at some point. You click "save image as" and your CPU dials the number for the cops and turns you in.

As far as it not being constitutional, forget about that defense. The Supreme Court decides what the Constitution says, not the ordinary people for whom it was written.

Basically, the US government is attempting to muscle through these trade agreements to severely limit freedom of speech and internet use.
There's one big problem here, which I think most of us can see.

Who's gonna police this? Can you tell which MP3's are illegal? What about your dad? Or your granddad?

Now add in all the people who are ready with the lawyers for the first person to even challenge them.

I don't think we need to worry until they get people who actually know something about piracy on their side.
