Don't blame us! This garbage is coming from idiotic U.S. corporations who think this is going to do anything except make a lot of people very, very angry.

We don't have any control over our country anymore. It seems that every day more and more of our elected officials are bought out by the corporations. If the United States ratifies ACTA, that will prove it beyond any doubt.

I forget who I'm quoting here, but I believe they said, "America is designed for business."

...fuck. Almost makes me wish the world actually was going to end in 2012. It'd be better than putting up with 60+ more years of this crap.

Damn that looks painful, but at the same time, pretty damn awesome.

OnTopic: Anyway like everyone else already said, this won't pass at all so don't worry.
Remember the real threat is chocolate covered dolphins.

Common people are rarely to blame for anything global. WW2, for instance, was not the fault of nazi germans but their leaders.
When people point a finger at the US they point it at the congerss house, the pentagon or the white (out)house.
Lucky though that international treaties and agreements take a long time to get a shape of any kind or get other countries to agree to them.

Barbara! Get me...4chan!
if I may, I would probably mention that 4chan is actually already on the case, though they are also actively looking for allies, this is much bigger then Scientology, and a direct threat to them in so far as I'm aware.

see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fBxi2eaVPo&feature=related among many others, I'd also suggest rolling over the b 4chan forums, you might get some of their threads there.

I can't see this realistically gettingthrough, for one thing it breaches our human rights.
Secondly there is already so much protest for it already it will not get through. This is just a scare campaign so people will fear the power of the USA

Honestly I am borderline racist towards Americas because of their religiousness, political bullshit, racism towards black and stupidity. if it wasn't for some of the guys on the Escapist and one person one Xbox live I probably would be.

I pitty your image you give to the rest of the world America

I didn't know about the specifics until recently, so since then I've been doing a few days straight (aside from work) of research into it, last time I was this pissed off I was watching people get rounded up like cattle on the streets of Toronto for the G20.

Fair enough. By now I've completely and utterly forgotten what this thread or my comment was concerning but, yes, yes indeed.

Dammit, that means a severe limit on the types of pornography that we are allowed to watch.

Y'know, if all of this goes through, there are going to be new hacker groups popping up that can broadcast pirate internet connections via wireless that can fight through all of the government's blocks and censors. They'll fly around sewers in electromagnetically powered ships, rescuing people form the bullshit that the government feeds directly into our brains. And then, every single one of those people freed from the government will abandon their real names in favor of their internet handles and X-Box Live user names. Won't it be fun?
You've just described the plot of sewer shark. (video game, look it up)

huh? the matrix?...never heard of it. Go away.

If this is true, I won't be surprised. This is exactly the kind of stuff that the Obama Govt. is all about.

Though I'm not saying that I expect it to pass, or believe this source.

ACTA doesn't care what country you're from, they're trying to get everyone to hop on board with this one so jurisdiction issues wont matter (like between the U.S. and Poland).

This is serious, there's a lot of talk going on about it, and it will be bad news for everyone other than big business / government. For U.S. citizens it will completely override the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) so don't think you're safe there.

If you're concerned about this, which you should be, make sure you get active with your local government or whatever. Get this wretched thing fired off into space.

I don't understand what any of this means. Can someone explain it for stupid people like me?
Basically:

1) Free speech will no longer exist on the internet. Because:

Websites can be taken down simply by someone claiming the site has copyright infringing material (note that they don't have to prove it).

ISPs are held accountable for copyright infringement, meaning they will (most likely) actively police it and outright ban anyone who attempts an infringing action.

Very large fines imposed on anyone who ever looks at copyrighted material the wrong way.

2) Any and all DRM countermeasures will be made illegal, and the creators have no legal requirement to ensure said DRM actually functions.

3) Any customs officer can search your person and luggage without any sort of real evidence. As long as they suspect you have copyright infringing materials, they can go through your stuff without any repercussions.

There's one big problem here, which I think most of us can see.

Who's gonna police this? Can you tell which MP3's are illegal? What about your dad? Or your granddad?

Now add in all the people who are ready with the lawyers for the first person to even challenge them.

I don't think we need to worry until they get people who actually know something about piracy on their side.
They don't have to police it, that's the problem. Based on the structure of the bill (from what I understand, I'll be the first to admit I'm no lawyer), it seems highly likely that the vast majority of censorship and limitations imposed on the internet will be directly from ISPs. The service providers are being held accountable for copyright infringements committed by any of their clients, which means that they will do everything in their power to stop it, including outright blocking people from connecting to sites containing copyrighted information.

And if that wasn't enough, just about anyone could point at a website and go "I COPYRIGHTED THAT!" and the website would be forced to shut down, at the very least until the end of the investigation if not permanently.

Not to mention the incredibly vague "Customs officials". It wouldn't exactly be that hard to create a portion of Customs that does nothing but run around domestically and "searches" people's various electronics for "copyright infringements".

This bill does terrible, terrible things to the very idea of free speech. It will basically destroy the internet as we know it.

Edit: Wow at the necrobump. I gotta watch post times more.

Well, a couple of things spring immediatly to mind:

1)That site doesn't seem that credible to me.
Then check out the other hundreds of sites posting information about ACTA.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Counterfeiting_Trade_Agreement

2)If something like this did happen, there would be so much of a public shit storm that it would have to be reversed.
This is likely, I highly doubt the public is going to accept this. The only way such drastic change like this could happen is for it to happen over time and not all at once. But it seems like they are pushing for quick change, but we'll see how it plays out.

3)I'm from England, so this wouldn't really affect me.
This includes the EU.
