Cause I was black.

he he he he he he.

But yeah, I was the race that was black (don't remember what they were called). And seeing how I ended up being a huge thief, so I was guessing there was a connection to that.

I got the game (GOTYE) for Christmas and I'm barely into the storyline so sorry if it tells you later, but as far as I know the game never tells you why you were in jail at the beginning. There is no right or wrong answer, just based on you/your characters personality or whatever why do you think you were in prison? :)
well my first character was a Kajit and she was in jail for indecent exposure... not exactly sure why she was sentenced to death for that but it all worked out in the end

my second character was a Dark Elf and (obviously) he was jailed for getting blitzed on mama potion and giving a High Elf a wedgie

my Ork was put in jail preemptively for not specializing in melee and heavy armor and being a drag to play as

Seeing as I remade my Morrowind character could be anything (He was head of the Morag Tong, Thieves Guild, House Hlaalu and was a vampire then a werewolf.) So really there was alot of scope

I stole someones ceramic mug and rather than pay the fine, indiscriminately slaughtered an entire town between Leyawiin and Cheydinhal and raised the town to the ground. Inevitably I eventually grew weary of the screams and tiresome "attempt to arrest me" when I went to bars, so I paid the fine for the mug, as long with a meager side discrepency payout for the murder of 182 people, and arson. Luckily the mug sent a messenger in the form of the emperor and I set about my quest to once again become master of the mug.

She was picked up in a "dangerous" part of Leyawin, to protect her from the Argonian bourgeoisie and refused to show the guard proper "appreciation." Then escorted to the maximum security prison for attempted homicide with a shoe against the same guard one day when he dropped of her food. They hadn't thought to install those sliding food doors in the cell doors yet.

Petty theft, grand theft, murder, disrupting the peace, conducting private warfare, you know, the kinda stuff I went right back to doing the second I got back out.
