How can a school ban media aimed at adults, when said adults are attending their school?

Are you in a private school.. ?

Do they disallow cigarettes and alcohol as well?
They are fine with it as long as it is off campus, but I don't want to go out of my room to play my games...

Also, the amount of blood is a little gratuitous in Oblivion for it to be 'T'. It wasn't JUST mods that caused it to be bumped up to 'M'.
The bump ups in the game were after the ESRB passed judgment on the rating. Since there was nothing Bethesda could do to stop it, they decided to at least fill in some more possibilities for them.
On May 3, 2006, the North American Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) changed the rating of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, a video game for PCs, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, from Teen (13+) to Mature (17+). The ESRB cited the presence of content not considered in their original review in the published edition of Oblivion. This included detailed depictions of blood and gore and sexually explicit content. The sexually explicit content was an art file, made accessible by a third party modification called the Oblivion Topless Mod, that rendered the game with topless female characters.[2][3]

-Wikipedia

In there it mentions detailed depictions of blood and gore.

Am I the only without a problem with his dorm prohibiting M-rated games? It's sort of entirely the dorm's choice what students can bring.

The ESRB is archaic. If they are taking user created content into consideration, then they must ban every game on the planet. As any game can be altered into anything else. You could alter Oblivion so you can play as an invulnerable Hitler, where all the NPCs are Jews. It can be as graphically violent or as sexually explicit as you want.

This is the very nature of modification.

Should someone ban regular magazines that feature pictures of regular women? Because surely it would be sexually explicit if someone were to draw nipples on all the women with a permanent marker.... oh.. the horror...

Apparently not.

But most people would assume college is an adult-learning center, where people can be comfortable enough to enjoy basic liberties, and to be treated like proper adults.

I'll need to look into this. It sounds beyond silly.. I'd like to know their reasoning behind it.

The blood disappears after 10 seconds, so I doubt that had any effect. Like I said the Dark Brotherhood bits are what helped push it over, as well as mods.
whats wrong with the wuestline (never joined the brotherhood) and i was wondering what the fuss is about?

No M games in college where everyone is 17+?
Brain...imploding...
Well, college isn't really.. "college" anymore. Clearly these places are turning into Orwellian indoctrination centers. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume the logic on banning M-rated games is because they don't want students becoming violent and shooting up the school. I seriously wouldn't doubt it.

Well its a very big spoiler. I'll try to be as vague as possible.

Basically its a high ranking Brotherhood member getting skinned, mutilated, and hung upside-down with characters around them reminiscing about how great it was to do these things. And while it is very messed up, if you play up to that point you understand why they did that.

Thats the worst, and it seems Bethesda didn't show this to the ESRB. So this, along with the nude mod, caused it to get re-rated.

Funny.

But seriously.. what's the point?

Should they start banning provocative books as well? Surely there are books far, far more disturbing than anything in Oblivion? Boobs & corpses, oh noes! Anything but boobs!

Hehe, yep. I'd say the Dark Brotherhood has the best questline in the game. Its just so throughly awesome.

Indeed. The nude mods in Oblivion are as about as erotic as a visit to the doctor's anyway. There's plenty of better things on the grand ol' internet.

What college are you going to that doesn't allow 'M' rated games? I'm curious because I also live in Alberta.

No, I don't use any mods for Oblivion and I actually don't play that game anymore. However I don't think the ESRB (or any such ratings board) should change a games rating because of user-generated content.

Still I find it odd that your college won't allow 'M' rated games because presumably every student at a post-secondary institution should be old enough to play them.

You commit ritualistic killings for a lord of murder depicted eating babies and revelling in their blood. There is also a statue of said god throwing malnourished babies to the ground while they claw it it with little hooks for hands. Its pretty sick if you actually think about it.

I'm curious to what college you go to as well as I live in Grande Prairie and attend GPRC, they didn't have any issues with M rated games in dorms there
