Didn't a former Irish president post on Twitter or something that SHE was appalled at what SOPA was trying to do? I remember reading it on Memebase... so the legitimacy of it is in question...
Mary McAleese and I don't think that was legitimate. There were a load of spelling mistakes, she's a very well educated woman, and Tweets are only 140 characters, it seems too long, not that I've counted.

If this law works out okay, will the rest of the world hate us?

Well damn, now this has passed other countries will follow I think.
Follow Ireland? Why would anyone do that, the country is a mess.
Shh... Some people still think we're cool.
Oh I know. My dad was Irish and because of that I can speak in the really stereotypical film accent they always give Irish people. Every time I do it people want to talk to me. It's quite worrying.

If I was the kind of guy that downloads illegal torrents, what would this mean for me?
probably allot jail time even if you just uploaded a picture of let,s say Gordon Freeman with a mustache on your FB page.
I think it,s sad a country that,s a member of the European Union pulled a stunt like this.
I really hope the main land government doesn't pull shit like this.

People! Hear me!

You may not wish to believe this, but it is in fact GOOD NEWS EVERYONE! Please, allow me to explain.

Ireland is a rather small internet market compared to other industrialized nations. This will be a perfect experiment to show what the law will do. It will likely fail miserably, and eventually in such a small country the outcry will be too much and it will be repealed. The damage will be undone, and we'll have a shining example of why we SHOULD NEVER put forward such a law.

Had this happened in America, politicians would have tried to come up with other issues to distract us from trying to get it repealed and it may have come to be a fact of life.

So this does suck for Ireland, but for the whole world it could be a bit of a boon.

what I,m afraid of is that before it fails politicians say "hey look we can easily violate human rights like the Irish!"

Bleh. I think this'll collapse if they try and make any big moves. Shut down FB or youtube and everyone who was kept in the dark about this will suddenly get very very annoyed.
This is the point that youtube and FB go dark voluntarily due to the fact they would have to change their policies to accommodate Ireland. This would piss of a good chunk of the remaining 4 million or so Irish citizens not already signing petitions.

Would someone explain to me why someone hasnt voted this areshole out of office from a rooftop?
mainly because Irish politics are a joke. All the parties have pretty much the same opinion on everything. Except for Sinn Fein who do their own stupid thing. One of their campaign slogans was something along the lines of "Lets not pay back Europe" And most people I know voted for a Sinn Fein TD because "He seemed the nicest". He was also the only one who actually lived in his constituency. Anyway the reason he wasn't voted out is because the others would have done the exact same thing

They already think they can. They already want to. The question is whether they can get away with it or not. If there is a huge backlash in Ireland from the repercussions of this bill, it will send a message that it can't be done. That they aren't that powerful yet.

So we just need to hope that Ireland doesn't screw it up for humanity.

No pressure or anything, Ireland. Please don't shame the 12.5% of my heritage that comes from you!

So perhaps the Irish need to use the IRA again.
Why do people keep saying this, even in jest? I don't think people realize what the IRA actually is today...
is it the internet rebellion army/jk I know what the IRA is

OT: thank god northern Ireland isn't effected by the laws of the republic of Ireland
Amen to that Brother.

I anticipate riots.

Why? Because it's Ireland. History shows that we (because I am of Irish descent) tend to frown on stuff with torches and pitchforks.

Why do foreign people constantly refer to themselves as Irish?

Why do people who come to America call themselves American? 'Because you live there' is really less of a reason than genetic traits, family, or history. Even still, I don't call out people for THAT, so you can let this one slide.
