Irrational: BioShock in the Sky Would Be "F**king Boring"

Why name it Bioshock? Yes, there's that whole idea of instant Brand recognition......but this is fucking 2011 (2012 by the time the game comes out); everyone is on the internet and everyone would instantly know that this game is from Irrational and is a spiritual sequel to Bioshock, because everybody is connected and shit.

Heck, a lot of people went for Bishock itself because they loved System shock, right?
Brand association (in the games industry) is an anachronistic concept, I think.

HAH.

System Shock 2 would like a word. Were you guys "freaking bored" when you lifted the story structure wholesale from SS2?

Maybe they mean to say it would be boring the THIRD time, as opposed to both the previous times.

This entire article begs the question that others here have already mentioned: if it's so different, then why put Bioshock in the name? The fact that they're going to cash in on brand familiarity is a given, but the underlying issue is that the AAA game industry as a whole are giant pussies who have too much money invested to take a chance on completely new IP.

In this case, I'm not positive about who out of 2K or Irrational is more to blame for the game's title, but it seems like Irrational wants to create something original but is stuck trying to play the familiarity card to generate sales potential so that they can afford to put out their game. This game shouldn't be called anything involving the word shock, remember how stupid it was that Bioshock shared very little with the System Shock series, and yet they bandied it about as some kind of spiritual successor. Why name a game that way, which creates expectations for fans, and then fail to meet those implied expectations? Why not just come up with something original?

This seems about as likely to work as making a family friendly horror movie.
Just to be pedantic, they did.

And <link=http://www.metacritic.com/movie/coraline>it worked.
Admittedly it'd work occasionally, but the track record isn't in favour of such a move.

I think many users are misinterpreting that statement. I assume they mean that if the game played the same way, then it would be boring in the new setting so 2K is completely overhauling the concept to create a similar game with a completely new feel.
I for one LOVE when designers try something new for sequels instead of just rehashing the last game with a new paintjob so I have high hopes for this game.

well i couldn't have cared less for bioshock or bioshock 2, so if this is near opposite of those then color me interested based on that.

Did they just called their game boring?
Last time, I recall it is still titled BioShock, right?
Point: Missed.

They're saying that Bioshock: Infinite will NOT be the same as the first two. I don't believe them, but that's what they're saying.
If they made falling to your death a constant threat every second it would be nice.
Though all shooters play similarly theses days.
This button does this and that button does that all the time....I mean all shooters are set up like that these days.
It may as well be this :/

Well then why call it Bioshock?

I'm sure Irrational will do a great job as they always do but this sounds more like a spiritual successor then a new installment and the Bioshock name is just to sell more copies. They should call it Aeroshock or something.

nothing makes a point clearer than repeatedly dropping the f-bomb for emphasis. & here I was thinking it was like calling a bison a buffalo.

okay then, it wasnt like they could give it a new name, what with it being all about genetically modifying superpowers and giant robots, and obviosuly it wasnt going to be like the original, first two had a very survival horror feel to them, this seems to colourful and open to create that feeling,
but its a fantastic game tho and i cant wait

I don't think they're suggesting that it's going to be totally different; the trailers alone make it obvious that it isn't. I think they're planning to take the same basic idea of guns/plasmids-or-whatever-they're-calling-them-now and use it in a different way.

Huh? Infinite sets itself in a retro-futuristic premise, tackles a political ideology, has something similar to the Big Daddy, and involves supernatural powers - that just screams 'Bioshock' to me. Not naming it Bioshock would've been retarded.

I'm personally glad with the way irrational has sequeled bioshock 1 with infinite, when playing bioshock 2 it felt as though the creative team had nothing to do with the characters and storyline, so upon investigation I found that Irrational had nothing to do with bioshock 2 and was instead working on a sequel which lived up to the expectations I had for the studios next move after first playing bioshock.

I think the only real problem infinite has is that bioshock 2 may have sullied the name of bioshock leaving Irrational at a disadvantage. If people approach infinite as though bio 2 hadn't been released they'd find their interest for this game as high as mine

Because each Final Fantasy game is exactly the same as the previous one (among, I assume, other examples that I'm too lazy to think of right now)? The game clearly has significant elements of the franchise, just in a different setting. That suggests 'Bioshock' to me.

Bioshock is no longer that game set under the water with interesting political overtones and cool special powers. It's now that franchise set in a variety of differing locales with (I assume) differing political overtones and cool special powers.

Personally, I completely fail to see how this is a bad thing.

edit: Rhetorical question; I'm well aware of the two possible answers.
1) it's not actually that different.
2) Trying to cash in on the name
Or for the reasons they've said before. I.e. Fantastical setting and heavy-weight themes.

*cue a rant on how games won't be more than they are if people never expect them to be*

OT: Can't help but feel they should have announced it later (I mean come on, 2 years before the initial release date!) so that they could get things clearer by actually showing more of it.
