Irrational: BioShock in the Sky Would Be "F**king Boring"

Another part of this grand travesty is how this undermines the story of Bioshock. Suddenly, Andrew Ryan is less of a visionary than a moronic copycat who failed to see that one utopia set apart from society is just as likely to fail as the next.

Visually, whatever, triple-A games look good. Whatever. Plotwise? Gah.

We know nothing of the plot or whether it's even in the same universe as the original Bioshock. And if you're going to go "Why name it Bioshock then?", first: marketing, and second; look at my above post. Even if it is in the same universe, I don't think it would undermine Andrew Ryan's story because it could easily be taken as a standalone title.

I'm thinking the reason they kept the BioShock name is because if they didn't, they'd just face accusations of, "It's just BioShock in the sky!" and they decided that since one of the major complaints against BioShock 2 was that it didn't do ENOUGH things differently from the original, they decided that, "Hey, this barely has anything in common with BioShock!" would be the lesser of two complaints.

You know what would have made people differentiate it from Bioshock. Calling it Systemshock. That would spur some "irrational" excitement right there. Har-dee-har.

Spoiler:(trololo)
In the end of the game, the city falls in the Atlantic. And that psychic woman leaves a beacon of some sort. Then we get a cut-scene where 50? years later, Andrew Ryan wakes up, shocked. Runs out on deck, and shouts: We begin building here!

I'm fucking calling it.

The gameplay looks much the same as Bioshock-- gun/plasmid power/swarms of baddies. Why shouldn't they call it Bioshock? It's the same game in a different setting.

And I'm very very glad they didn't go back to Rapture. Frankly, I never finished Bioshock 2. My enjoyment of the first came from the world building and exploration. Second time around, there were a few new things to discover, but it just didn't have that feeling of exploring the unknown.

And hey, Steampunk is in. Also really like the snippets of political satire we see-- that time period was filled with xenophobic/rectionary political movements. It'd be cool if Infinite throws in some takes on the whole class warfare issues of the time as well ala Haymarket Affair et al (the Battle of Blair Mountain might be a bit late for the circa 1900 atmosphere, but it's altenate history)

So basically, it's the new Devil May Cry situation again?
Studio wants to release a new IP but is quite aware that nobody buys 'new games' on release, so they incorporate it into a loved franchise so it doesn't end up being bought used.

Fair enough.

Well bioshock was pretty boring and unimaginative and the mechanics and AI sucked as well.

I think what they are getting at is its more action adventure than a poor attempt at action horror.

If it's so different why did they call it bioshock? Why not call it.. I dunno... off the top of my head Aeroshock?

edit: Rhetorical question; I'm well aware of the two possible answers.
1) it's not actually that different.
2) Trying to cash in on the name
Their company is called BIOware. Thats why it's called BIOShock.

They must have realized that a game called Bioshock Infinite would make people think of, oh I don't know, Bioshock.

Bioshock was, appropriately, a sudden and abrupt change from what console owners were used to from FPSs. It was a fantastic shoot-em-up and thought-provoking mind trip with a dash of "holy shit I just electrocuted the whole room". It stayed in people's minds. Irrational should be proud that they created a game like that, and not be surprised that that word evokes Ayn Rand and underwater exploits. If a single word can take you on a trip, then you made a great experience.

They should have chosen a different title that didn't include the same name if they didn't want people drawing comparisons constantly.

For the same reason there are twelve fifteen twenty-one a bunch of Final Fantasy games but none of them even takes place in the same universe. Final Fantasy means it'll be a turn-based RPG with an epic storyline, a weird technomagical universe, outrageous hairstyles and clothes, and a naked chick called Shiva you can summon. By that token, they're probably working Bioshock to mean a first person shooter with weapon mods and magic that's called science in an alternate version of early 20th century and in a place that's taken an already extreme political stance to its extreme.

and that's fine in my book. It allows developers to create sequels without being derivative: they are not obliged to bring elements that don't fit well. And yet, the investors aren't riled. It's what, to an extent, Call of Duty and GTA have been doing already, and those franchises are kind of famous.

Why am I not surprised by the number of illiterate dullards repeating "duuuuuur they just called their game boring" and "well, if it's not Bioshock, why'd they call it that?" Let's recap:

-Infinite explores similar themes and ideas to the original Bioshock
-However, it has a new setting, art style, and new political idealogy.
-They are trying to have the new setting effect the established style of the series in a different way, both in terms of storytelling and gameplay (such as by utilizing the fear of heights as opposed to, say, the fear of drowning in the first game).

Therefore, what they are saying is that it's not the original Bioshock just put in a different skin, but rather a new way to explore the same concept (think of Martin Scorsese's gangster flicks, the only difference being that Irrational Games are making it in the form of a 'sequel'). How does this not get through to people?
