Irrational: BioShock in the Sky Would Be "F**king Boring"

From what I've seen thus far the game does seem a little different, but in a good way. The first two shocks of bio didn't grab my interest that much but I've seen the trailers of Infinite shocks of bio and I wait with much anticipation to get my thumbs on it (and index fingers too, for the shoulder buttons).

However, why are they trying to treat this as a massive departure from the other games? That's how I'm perceiving Irrational's comments although I could be wrong. I know that in terms of gameplay and style, the game may be a bit of a departure but wasn't it stated a while back that Infinite would be a prequal loosely tying into the overall story of the Bioshock universe? Hmm, maybe I misread something...

This feels like a really nice way of saying "our publisher overlords wanted a sequel because a pre-existing fanbase guarantees sales, but we didn't want to remake the same fucking game, so we tacked 'Bioshock' on the title even though this game has nothing to do with that one, and please don't get mad at us if it ends up being a completely different experience".

So they're deliberately misleading people then? Why call it Bioshock if it's "not Bioshock". If I cooked something called bell peppers and beef, then you wouldn't be in the wrong for expecting the ingredients that comprise the name of the dish to actually be ingredients used.
Must..give..kudos...

Good Cowboy Bebop reference!

While i still disagree with you on the Bioshock naming, while there is a game Bioshock, and a popularly terrible Bioshock2, "Bio" has many meanings, all effectively cool when set with words like shock and why should they be restricted for using such a cool term as a Bio-Shock, just because someone had a baby and named it George, and it was popular in sects as both good and bad, shouldn't mean every other George should have to alter their name to avoid similarity, praise, and shame thats been tagged along with it.

Thats like harping on Grand Theft Auto because someone produced a game earlier named Epic Automobile Robbery.

I'm not normally obsessive enough for shit like this, but when I saw the demo for this I mapped out in my mind how it wanted to end.

It only works if there ends up being some link in it to the first two games, which I'm not sure there will be. In my idea there's a controllable epilogue. It fast forwards to the 50s and you wake up, leave an apartment and find yourself in Rapture at it's full glory. After a few money shots of the city and a few minutes to explore, you're led up to Andrew Ryan's office where he turns round and says "I've been expecting you" or some corny shit like that, then it cuts to the credits.

I think too much about things.

this is either a keen eye by me or the fact that im a nerd and idiot for immediatley thinking 'Cowboy bebop' when i read "bell peppers and beef"
:S. The statement seems to have lost me in the crossfire, im not exactly sure what its implying; whether its originating from the idea that a bioshock game in the sky would be terrible because its not underwater? Or that the story would be boring? From what i've seen of the game, it was enough to spark my interest, because the gameplay looks nice and the story seems quite intriguing. When it comes out though i may very well be saying that Bioshock infinite is awesome, and that the 1st bioshock was "fucking boring"

While it does look as though there will be a lot of similarity to the earlier games--and, well, it is a sequel--the new tone and location alone is enough to sell it for me.

They're pushing the boundaries of environments more than any other mainstream company I can think of. And shit, they're tackling to subject of racism? Not space-racism, or orc-elf racism, but alternative-history, semi-real world racism? In a game? Heady fucking material, mates! Another sign of the medium continuing its arduous process of growing up! Hear fuckin' hear!

Art direction-wise, BioShock Infinite has also taken a different turn. Irrational showed the evolution of the game's concept art which started very dark, and eventually became the more colorful world we see today. The studio says a brighter world can be even more alarming than a dark one, pointing to the lit scenes in The Shining as a comparison.
Yeah, because that worked SO WELL with Resident Evil 5...

I'd say the lighting was hardly one of the things that made Resident Evil 5 bad
No, but it meant they had to leave horror out of the question, You can't put horror in daylight, End of story! by making the game set in the Bright sunny filled plains of Africa.. well there's no sense of unknown, mystery, of darkness and depth... just lots of sand...
Actually, they THOUGHT they could do bright and sunshiney horror with RE5, and it wasn't scary in the slightest. That was my point with this: sunshine=not scary.

What I am wondering is how they plan to explain the whole "immigration" aspect. Why would the Ultranationalists see it as a big problem, considering the city is in the sky? It isn't as though foreigners could just fly on up whenever they wanted. The whole concept seems much more bizarre and outlandish than the first one.

The philosophy behind it might be interesting, but it doesn't look that impressive so far. They'll have to really change a lot of the core mechanics if they want this one to be different. Changing the setting and the overall philosophy only works for so long, even if the game is still an eye orgasm. And yeah, if the game has no continuity with the others, calling it a BioShock game is just another cheap move designed to cash in on brand recognition and seems stupid. But, business is business and they are in it to make coin.

In any case, let us hope they manage to tackle the subject material in a sophisticated way. They seemed to do well the first time, so this ought to be no exception. Still skeptical though.

Bioshock being set under the sea gave the sort of feel to the game that most horror shooters would kill for. Setting it in the sky makes it sound like fucking Rainbow Road. If you're making a completely different game, call it something different, don't try and lure us in with unrelated content. In fact, just don't develop the game.

"Did they just called their game boring?
Last time, I recall it is still titled BioShock, right?"

I bet they make it in like the Earth's upper atmosphere so its like floating, but not quite in space yet...and during some endgame event pieces of the city fall to earth, and the final boss fight is in a capsule that hits the Ocean near Rapture.
