I'm playing Fallout 2 right now, I would reccommend getting that over Fallout 1. It just feels more forgiving and fun.

Fallout 1 had a number of useless stats, skills and perks and the game hated you if you didn't pick the right ones.

Then again... I pumped all my points inot small guns, lockpick and speech in F2 so I'm doing better with it.

Oh, and they are ten times harder than Fallout 3, and you often have to watch some dull large scale combat occur in turn based hell. just bear that in mind.

ALso, don't be fooled by the nostalgia.

Fallout 3 is more fun than both of them put together.

Most under the age of 20 are going to find 1 and 2 very difficult. You kids are spoiled on easy hand-holding games of this generation. Back in MY day games were something for you to MASTER and CONTROL, not something to enjoy :D

From what i've heard, if you liked Fallout 3, you'll probably hate the other 2, if you disliked fallout 3, you'll have more chance of enjoying the other two.

Fallout 1 & 2 are worth getting if you're patient or are really dedicated to the Fallout universe. I've not played 3 myself, but be aware that the classics will be extremely different both in terms of appearance and function. They will most definitely seem slower-paced and more restrictive, but if you give them time and appreciate them for what they are, you should get enough enjoyment out of them.

My personal preference between the originals is the first. I played it first, so naturally I'll have fonder memories of it, but compared to FO2, it's got much more concision and cohesiveness. FO2 does a lot of new stuff and bumps the scope of the first game way up, but at a certain point I stopped caring about what I was doing because a lot of places felt tacked on for extra gameplay lengthening.

FO2 is in my opinion the most open ended RPG ever made (without ever devolving into the "sandbox" nonsense that we are so used to today) and has one of the best main storylines as well, with a truly explosive ending. Graphically it doesn't look good for today's standards of course, and turn based combat doesn't sit well with some people, but for me it is the second best game I have ever played. There always is a possibility that it won't be your cup of tea of course, since back then games placed some demands on the players in order to get the most out of them.

FO1 is like 2 but with a less imaginative story, fewer weapons and items and massive problems in its user interface and party design. You can't even push people out of the way if they are blocking you, you are just screwed. There' still a great game underneath all that but it's unplayable by today's standards in my opinion. FO2 fixed most of those problems so it plays smoothly.

Eh, they are very clunky and dull and it's not like the writing is even that great to make up for it.

I grew up with Fallout and Fallout 2 so to me Fallout 3 is a steaming pile of turds. The engine being awful is its main flaw on top of totally removing the humor element once you leave the fault. Boring combat, etc. So it is my experience that people who like one generally don't like the other. The combat in Fallout and Fallout 2 is also generally awful but it's much less awful than Fallout 3. If you can live with it, the characters/dialog/story/quests/world make up for it. So much so that it's the best RPG I've ever played. It really isn't that hard, but I guess people these days are conditioned to Call of Duty and Halo.

Of the two, Fallout is much better. Fallout 2 is still amazing though.

You can grab them on Good Old Games for fairly cheap.

I agree, fallout 2 was a bit overdone, the original fallout was a little bit simpler and fun.

You should start playing fallout 1 first.Fallout tactics was pretty good although it is kinda different from its predecessors. Basically it is like fallout 2 but with more combat and far less dialogue.

They were good games in their time but they might be a bit painful to play now. Read a summary if you want the stories, but I'd pass on playing them now

F1 and F2 are some of the best games i haver ever played, (F1 been the best of the two), they are worth by the sheer hilarity of some of the stuff you find in the game :D

I would say Fallout 2 is better but Fallout 1 starts out much better and introduces some stuff that does show up in the second one. I would say unless someone hates point and click isometric games, hates RPGs, or is a graphic, whore both games are worth playing.
Fallout 1 does start better.

The Temple of Trials keeps me from replaying it.

Yes, if you've got the paitience to deal with them. The can be trickey and they don't look that pretty (now) but they're damn good games. If you're a graphics whore or a namby who can't deal with difficulty they'll get frustrating very quickly (espeically the opening of FO2)

While many don't rate it, Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel (the other game in the collection) isn't a great Fallout game but is a pretty fun tactical combat game as far as I'm concerned.

They're both really good games but for whatever reason I have a hard time getting into them again. My play time is limited greatly in my older age so perhaps that's it. They're the kind of games you really have to sink your teeth into, because they both make modern rpgs look a little underwhelming with their complexity.

This has proven to be a quite useful thread. I've never played Fallout 1 or 2 before. Have been planning to, though. Now I must take a look at them. Insanely difficult shouldn't be too much of an issue. That's basically the Normal-setting for older games. Ah, good old times when you weren't forgiven and given a pat on the back all the time you did something wrong.

A lot of people also don't like 2 because of the often quite silly humor and pop culture references. Personally I wasn't disturbed, but I guess for some people it kinda destroyed the illusion.

True. Just remember when playing the second one, watch out for drugs. This game doesn't mess around. Just saying.

I was late with this too and hadn't even heard of Fallout before Fallout 3. I find that if you're so used to playing the modern game then playing one of the first games for the first time, due to the huge difference in gameplay, it might be a struggle.

I am planning on getting those first two games at some point and can't wait for New Vegas.

Get them get them get them!!! Seriously, do it!!! I love those games and I still play them from time to time. Yeah the difficulty's mental and the graphics are dated, but they're still mad fun. :)
