I have FO1 and FO3, and as I'm 20 I'm more used to your LOL I POINT AND FINGZ DIE games so FO1 is much more of a challenge for me, not to mention it full screens on a 1600x900 monitor. I'm not too bothered by Turn Based combat due to my frequency with RPGs, but FO1's is a bit cumbersome. Half tempted to get FO2 to finish the set, too.

I'm playing Fallout 2 right now, I would reccommend getting that over Fallout 1. It just feels more forgiving and fun.

Fallout 1 had a number of useless stats, skills and perks and the game hated you if you didn't pick the right ones.

Then again... I pumped all my points inot small guns, lockpick and speech in F2 so I'm doing better with it.

Oh, and they are ten times harder than Fallout 3, and you often have to watch some dull large scale combat occur in turn based hell. just bear that in mind.

ALso, don't be fooled by the nostalgia.

Fallout 3 is more fun than both of them put together.
L O L. You must mean easier, Fallout 3 more fun than a 1/100 of the first Fallout?, pfffftt. For the difficulty part Fallout 2 on easy would fuck up a Fallout 3 "hardcore" player. And rape it up the bum. With a doodly stick.

I grew up with Fallout and Fallout 2 so to me Fallout 3 is a steaming pile of turds. The engine being awful is its main flaw on top of totally removing the humor element once you leave the fault. Boring combat, etc. So it is my experience that people who like one generally don't like the other. The combat in Fallout and Fallout 2 is also generally awful but it's much less awful than Fallout 3. If you can live with it, the characters/dialog/story/quests/world make up for it. So much so that it's the best RPG I've ever played. It really isn't that hard, but I guess people these days are conditioned to Call of Duty and Halo.

Of the two, Fallout is much better. Fallout 2 is still amazing though.
Agreed.

Most under the age of 20 are going to find 1 and 2 very difficult. You kids are spoiled on easy hand-holding games of this generation. Back in MY day games were something for you to MASTER and CONTROL, not something to enjoy :D
Giving commentaries like:

"I can't kill that guy because I'm stupid, this game SUCKS"

Really destroys the market for some good games.

I was a little late to the Fallout party when I jumped on with Fallout 3. I find the story very intriguing and would like to play the first games. So my question is Fallout 1 & 2 worth getting? I look forward to reading your comments.
THey are 1000X time better than Fallout 3... if you can pass over the very dated graphics and turn based combats (I can)

Yes. Get them. Fallout 2 is, in my opinion, the better of the two, but Fallout 1 is still a giant boatload of fun. Just the annoying time limits can get to be a turn off if you really want to explore the whole world.

I played FO3 before either of the first two, but picked them up cheap on steam. Both are good fun, rewarding and have some very satisfying death animations.
Also if you like the Fallout world, its nice to spend more time there.

To be honest, I think 3 is funner than Fallout 2, and I have loved and played Fallout 2 since 1999.

Nope, I mean more fun.

Fun always comes down to peoples' personal taste.

I like the story and feel in the first two but I can't stand the turn based combat, especially when there are 6 or 7 enemies to fight at once.

I'm 29, I've been gaming for over two decades and I like all 3 games a lot, but Fallout 3 is by far my favorite.

Also contrary to all game design of the stupid ages (now), you're given a ton of character options that actually have an effect on your character (as opposed to, say, how far apart your neon yellow eyes are). So unless you're one of those boring people who read guides and/or cheat (same thing), you're likely going to die a lot. But thats why its fun. You could create the best character possible and just blow through the game, or you could create a character that reflects who you really are (or one that just seems unique) get your ass handed to you the whole way, and feel the triumph of just barely managing to complete the game despite nearly everything being stacked against you.

But these are the stupid ages. The times where difficulty just makes people angry and fun is synonymous with easy.

And to correct a previous post, fallout 1&2 are harder on easy than oblivion with guns is on hardest.

So if you feel like proving you're capable of thought, try them.
I don't see how the character options made a huge difference in F1 and 2 as opposed to 3? Sure, a high speech skill gave you some more dialogue options, and repair gave you access to things that F3 doesn't.

I also don't undestand your final point about being capable of thought. How are the older games in any way more thought-inducing than the third?

You just have to do do more math, that's all.

Yes, I understand you, it does comes down personal taste, I mean you can't compare a game from 2009, and a game from 1999, yeah, Fallout 3 is fun like a line, the fun is not always THAT great but it's present at all times, when in the original two Fallout's it just jumps up and down. For the turn based combat I agree, there are sometimes when you wish you were never born, in Fallout 3 you can outrun everyone because it's real time, and in Fallout 2 you have to use your AP wisely and plan everything. (it sounds good in theory but it's not, trust me)

Fallout 2 is the best of the originals in my opinion. Well worth a play. It might also help with understanding Fallout New Vegas as the NCR is possibly involved (the flag is in the trailer). And if its a bargain there's no excuse for not getting it.

This cutscene in Fallout 2 makes all of Fallout 3 look like Barney the Dinosaur;

It's simultaneously thought provoking yet aesthetically fulfilling - it represents WHY everyone should play Fallout 2.
umm.. wtf?

is that the new rick-roll or soemthing?

I liked fallout 2.. after a while i grew to love it.. however, i found i did need a walkthrough.. i didnt refer to it that much, but i found so many side quests are a lot harder to find than in fallout 3, and you kindof need eveyr experience point you can get.. (i think i have yet to level up past level 12 or something... shame cuz the higher level perks are really interesting..)

They're aged enough now to qualify as "retro gaming", but they're classics and totally worth a visit. It's remarkable to me how R-Rated the original games were as well, as being PC only they never attracted the media hubbub that the GTA series did. FO3 carried on the tradition of eye popping violence, but the originals were steeped in crass sexuality as well. In what other game can you force the lesbian hillbilly you were forced to marry in a shotgun wedding to serve as a fluffer for a post-nuclear porn studio? Aside from that German Sonic the Hedgehog adaptation?
