Normally I duck out of these "list off stuff you like" threads, as people are usually able to name all of the stuff that I like. However, Here and there, now and then is absent.

Escapist, I am disappoint.
That animé is incredibly boring.

I've spent a good chunk of my free time these past years watching the animes that caught my attention. At first it was refreshing to see new ideas, settings, and plots explored. As time went on though, I started actively searching for new things to watch. I stumbled upon a few hidden gems, but things progressed, the pickins got slimmer. I'm sick of the cliches. I'm sick of the stereotypical characters. I'm sick of the wasted storytelling opportunities that Japanese animation revels in.

I've seen too many to list here, but I want to ask if the internet has any other recommendations before I swear off the medium entirely. Is there anything left for a jaded anime fan?
If you've always wanted a romance anime with characters who are actually three-dimensional, interesting, and non-stereotypical, look no further than Toradora. It's a slice of life anime...that's actually good. Awesome, in fact. Awesome characters, beautiful animation, great story, incredibly well paced. I highly, highly recommend it, as an anime fan who also cannot stand stereotypical and unrealistic characters.

+1 for Highschool of the Dead. I'm trying to get back into anime just now and I found it for cheap. It's heavy on the fan service, but it gives it a grindhouse feel and it balances it with a lot of genuine horror moments.

Maybe also try Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne - immortal private detective, plenty of violence and interesting plot elements.

Another vote for Katawa Shoujo. What needs to be said has already been said, and it's the visual novel that made me want to get back into anime.

Un go is good, Phi brain is alright. Brave 10 is decent. Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon is neat but dumb. High School DxD is ok, Last_Exile_-Fam,_The_Silver_Wing is GREAT! Fairy tail is good.
I must admit to being vaguely saddened in only finding a mention of Fairy Tail by the 4th page, but ah well.

I don't watch much anime at all anymore, but Fairy Tail is simply awesome (it's the only anime I watch nowadays). I highly recommend everyone at least giving it a shot. :D
Still better than US tv/basic cable by a mile!

Our definitions of boring probably differ. Sure, the anime in question certainly isn't all that "fun" in the same way one with mecha battles would be, but I found it far more fulfilling. To each their own.

You've clearly seen a lot more anime than me, but if you haven't seen any of Studio Gainax's stuff, you're missing out. They live to laugh in the face of anime conventions.

Oh, and there's a not very popular Ghibli movie I feel inclined to mention: Only Yesterday, directed by Isao Takahata (who made Grave of the Fireflies). Hardly anyone's heard of it because Disney is holding on to the distribution rights without releasing it, but it's one of the best of the Ghibli movies.

Watching Higurashi no Naku Koro ni at the moment. I don't really understand what's happening but it seems good.

1. Agree there, as original as one can be with detective concepts.
2. Got it, would you like to expand (haven't watched any yet).
3. Yes, yes it is. I personally don't think it's as good as the original (thus far, at least), but it holds its own very well, even if the narrative is a tad choppy.

If you want EXTREMELY detailed realism and great character development, go for PLANETES.
Ah, I should so watch that again... and read the manga... again... you'll find the animation in planetES to be a lot smoother (it was done at 30+ instead of the usual 20-24).

OT: I'm watching Fafner: Dead Aggressor again... I remember thinking it was pretty good, considering I'm not a fan of mecha series.

Anyway, my top list is the following:

Gunslinger Girl
Haibane Renmei
le Chevalier D'Eon
Ergo Proxy
Serial Experiments Lain
Paranoia Agent
Gankutsuou
RahXephon
Aria (plus its sequels)
Usagi Drop
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
Fuujin Monogatari
GitS: SAC
Hourou Musuko

The bolded two are an acquired taste, but I believe to be fucking awesome... (and as un-tropey as you can get as far as anime themes are concerned).

That's because you need to wait until Kai, the second season. That's where the "answer" episodes are.

Give busou renkin a shot. Great anime that not many have watched. Kenichi is also good and I haven't heard of it much. Defies a few cliches. There are still good ones out there, they're just tough to find cuz there are so many. Keep looking.

Your implying anime was good to begin with.

I've never understood why kids tv being in a different language or from a different culture makes it any more acceptable for grown men and women to watch.

Right, now bring on the hate.
The fact that you can even call an entire genre "kid's tv" without dying of laughter is massively amusing to me. You can find anime just as dark and gritty and intellectual as any live action tv show.

That's a pretty good spread you've got there, but you're missing comedy. Specially, "sit-com" style comedy, where the humor comes from everyday life situations. Also, something "arthouse" would be good too.
Thanks for the tip. :)
I considered some of the sillier shows to cover comedy (such as soul eater being an action-comedy, or dokuro-chan being a comedy-fanservice(?)) but i guess there's a difference if you're mentioning it.

Any specific examples you recommend?

FLCL (or Fooly Cooly or Furi Kuri or however the kids spell it these days). Still one of the best anime I've ever seen. Nothing parallels it's crazy awesomeness.

In addition, have you seen Perfect Blue? It's pretty awesome.

This thread needs more 'Thexnolyze'! If you haven't seen it and like mature, dark anime, then check it out!

Well, Dokuro-chan is a comedy, but what you need is something more "sit-com" like I said.

And they don't get much more sit-com than Lucky Star the "Seinfeld" of anime (i.e it's a show about nothing). It's the day-to-day lives of a group of senior high school girls, one of whom is a massive geek. It finds humor in everyday situations (such as absent-mindedly turning the light off when you leave the room, despite there's still people using the room) that make you laugh because they've probably happened to you. Keep in mind, they changed directors after episode 4, so the first 4 episodes are not as good as the later ones.

Seitokai Yakuindomo is a great comedy too. I've done a review of it, so have a read [http://fireaza.blogspot.com/2012/01/okay-heres-another-post-from-escapist.html]. Suffice to say, it's very funny, and you're definitely better of watching the uncensored (well, as uncensored as they're allowed to be, they uncensor some of the dirty English words anyway) blu-ray version.

Genshiken, the greatest geek comedy bar none. Obviously, it's funnier if you know what's being referenced, and you know people like the characters in the show.

My Ordinary Life/Nichijou seemingly an ordinary comedy, save for the strong streak of absurdist humor that flows though the show. Such as the time the frail old school principal German suplexed a deer or the girl who has a crush on a guy, but tries to hide it with heavy weaponry. Rounding out the absurdity is the soundtrack: epic, high-quality classical music, because why not?

My Little Sister Can`t Be This Cute is probably the second greatest geek comedy. Despite the creepy-sounding title, it's actually poking fun at the ridiculous and unrealistic relationships depicted in semi-incest themed anime/games. Basic story is about a guy who discovers that the little sister he hasn't really talked to in years is actually a closet geek. Literally, she hides her hobby in her closet. Though her, he comes to understand geek culture, as well as his little sister a bit better. It's funny, well-animated and the characters have strong personalties.

Hetalia: Axis Powers - The history of the world, as portrayed by personifications of various countries. Naturally, each country is a stereotype of the country they represent (i.e Italy loves pasta, women and wine, but isn't near as good at war as his grandfather Rome was). Funny stuff if you know your history.

You can try Gintama. I know its not exactly dark or bloody but it has mature humour plus its just awsome

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZvmTQ2kVs4

Also try one piece, although its not really mature, I find its a combination of both
