So today me and this guy are talking. He brings up regular show. Specifically this episode.
And lo and behold; He brings up time travel. Why? Cuz he says he wants to go back to the past and change some situation right now regarding an ex-girlfriend. Then he keeps telling me now he want to go back to the past and and kidnap his past self.I SHIT YOU PEOPLE NOT. And he's so adamant in that delusion. I tell him he needs to let her go, he keeps saying he needs to go back. He even says that him and I need to research time travel. I'm like: ARE YOU FOR REAL RIGHT NOW? And then keeps telling me that I don't understand his situation. What I understood is that he is losing it. So your toughts?

tell your friend, as I would in your situation, "with the best will in the world, and with all possible respect, you're being stupid, shit happens and even if you could go back to the past and stop one thing it probably wouldn't help you in the long run" I actually said that to a friend in a similar situation, there are many things I wish I hadn't done, but if I didn't do them, I wouldn't have learned from them and probably would've screwed up some other way, time travel, even theoretically is a bad idea

EDIT: also try telling him it's a rookie time-travel mistake, if someone goes back in time to stop an incident from occuring, they'll probably end up being the cause of said incident, and if they succeed then the incident in question will never happen and you will never feel the need to go back in time and stop it, therefore it will still happen, does that make sense?

Here is your solution agree to work on it, then when you finish it go back and kidnap him so he doesn't ever bring it up

Explain to him that kidnapping himself would have happened to himself already if it was possible.

Have your friend watch a marathon of Back to the Future, Timecrimes, and Triangle. Post results.

Play along with his delusion by hiring an older, unkown gentleman who maybe sort of looks like him 30 years from now. Get this man to claim to be his future self come back in time to warn him from developing time travel and changing his past, because it will only make things worse for him.

Lolz will be had.

Obviously not. Yes! Yes he is! This has nothing to do with how he's appeared out of nowhere, told me how tomorrow is going to go, and is now pressing a gun against my temple in an attempt to convince you to help him.

Seriously, though, he was probably messing with you. You were probably freaking out early in the convo, and he just got worse for the lulz.

Oh boy, there has been plenty of film/ media where time travel was involve (not literal) but the overall result was to simply let it go and enjoyed the present.

Ah wait there's this one

Alternatively you could look up that Doctor Who (Christopher Eccleston) episode when Rose alter history by saving her father is result in the timeline getting destoryed by some flying creature things or any other media that time travel result in chaos!!

Just explain to him that even if he did somehow manage to make it back, removing the reason to go back would create a paradox, and well unless it goes by the many worlds interpretation, paradox's are never good.

Yes, this must happen ^

Either this, or your friend is trolling you instead.

I suggest a liberal application of smacks to the upside of his head. If you're truly his friend you know he needs it.

Just you watch, he's probably gonna invent time travel now and be all like, "HAHA Told you So!" And then ***** slap you like fifty times just for the hell of it. At least, that's what I'd do if I invented time travel

But no, he doesn't really sound serious

Yeah, I'm not getting it either. Maybe it's because I'm sleepy, but I'm not seeing the problem here. Are we supposed to be scared he's actually going to manage to go back in time, or something?

They were called the Reapers, and The Doctor could have fixed it but Rose fucked up again. Then when that got fixed she travelled to a parallel universe, then smashed back through to this one despite The Doctor telling her that would ruin everything even more efficiently.

Frankly he got rid of her just in the nick of time.

Oh, and she tried to convince him to spare a Dalek.

Is... is he serious?

I think you should give him support, but in the way that he wants. Steer him away from that line of thought, and make him question his belief. It sounds like he needs a bit of help realizing what's possible for him to accomplish and what he should be striving for.

On a more serious note, I think it's safe to say he was just daydreaming with the whole "travel back in time" thing. I doubt he was actually suggesting that he and you start trying to build a time machine.

Better;
Break into his room at night, beat him, tie him up, and say you're from the future and only doing this at his request. He'll regret ever having come up with the idea.
