I don't have an extreme for 3D. Some 3D movies were just awful and not fun at all (Final Destination, etc.), but movies like Piranha 3D are made to be stupid fun rather than a piece of art that will be appreciated for generations to come. Not all movies can be Cameron epic proportions (at least 2 1/2 hours, 2 hours of which must be useless dialogue). I miss the Cameron that made Terminator 2 and Aliens..

Anyways! 3D will never help make a movie any better than it is made..it's just a way to put a little extra fun in movies that already know that's what they're made for.

The entire concept of 3D is a gimmick until people find ways to view it WITHOUT stupid glasses. Nintendos on the right track with its 3DS but 3D movies are just gimmicks. Not worth the price of admission.

Every goddam movie has to be in 3D now! Thanks James Cameron! Avatar ruined hollywood so its either '3D or bust'. At least not everyone is on the 3D train, Chris Nolan didnt put Inception in 3D and thats why its currently #4 on IMDB top 250.

3D is currently a gimmick and James Cameron's best work was before mid-90's (True Lies, Terminator 1/2 etc.)

...Piranha 3D had boobs. Lots of Boobs. Some of them even undressed. Even if, magically, this is some kind of renaissance in Hollywood, and 3D is the next best audience-alienating advantage that certain films have...who gives a shit? Piranha 3D had cheap thrills, plenty of blood and titties, and Ving Rhames tearing into hungry fish with a fucking outboard. That it had more plot than Avatar did is (albeit vaguely) irrelevant. Not every film is meant to be a showcase, and certainly not every film needs to pander to every possible audience like his newest umpteen billion dollar codpiece. It's a bad monster movie taking the piss, and standing tall despite it, triumphantly achieving what it wanted, which was to startle the audience with cheap thrills. And titties.

Coincidentally, is anyone else annoyed that Avatar is back in theaters, for no apparent reason?

James Cameron, seriously?

His movies are so derivative you could take an integral of them.
I seriously want to find you and bake you a cake for that.

Honestly, this movie wasn't suppose to be the next Academy winner. It was suppose to be fun.

Making fun of it is like making fun of a blind deaf kid. You're just making yourself look bad.

3-D doesn't add anything to any movie. The only movie I've seen where I didn't mind wearing those bloody glasses was Toy Story 3.

Maybe the good Mr. Cameron should remove his head from his arse and realise Avatar only worked because of all the hype. It really wasn't all that.

I dont think 3D deserves its higher pricing in cinemas, but most likely that is the direction which many studios will migrate towards. Reminds me of what Pixar animations did to Disney hand drawns.

See I would agree with Mr. Cameron if I thought his little pet technology was anything but an utter waste of time and money.

3D: Avatar, YES
Piranha 3D, NO. Piranha 3D is a step backwards in 3D evolution.
Its the evolution of a gimmick so it doesn't really matter.

On the OP: I sense that this is a little more personal for him. Seeing as how Piranha 2:The Spawning was his directorial debut.

First of all in my opinion Avatar was not a piece of art for being in 3D and I think that he is hating on this movie cause of a past history he had with it. I saw Avatar in 2D and left unimpressed. The only difference between 3D and 2D is the headache afterwards. I hope that this gimmick will only be a passing fad and I think that we could something much more with movies that that whole, LOOK AT ME POINTING THEEERRRREEEE!
everytime I see I laugh like crazy!

Cameron is right that Piranha 3-D is the retarded brother in the movie biz. No Duh, James...that's the point. People didn't watch Snakes on the Plane for its gripping drama.
But him holding 3D up like it is the lost Ark of the Covenant of movies is starting to smell of Hollywood senility. Movies don't need a gimmick to sell tickets. Three weeks in and the movie Expendables is still selling seats(Ranked 3rd at this post, upset only by The Takers and Last Exorcism). Ensemble movies have a reputation of being low sellers at theaters and yet the 2 dimensional Expendables is breaking that boundary. Thanks to a fairly sound story and actors not hogging the spotlight.
People want a good plotline and a story that doesn't cause viewers to start looking at their watches. And much as what some here seem to say about Avatar, it doesn't slow down like Titanic did. But then again that movie never sped up. One would imagine that if the ship didn't sink and instead made it to port, it would have been a small blip on the ticket sales radar. I have my doubts it broke records because of the characters.
Anyway I digress. Mr. Cameron's rants about Pirahna 3-D are really smelling of anger towards other issues, and are speaking a little too much that maybe it is time James retired before he really goes downhill and takes a studio or two down with him.

Seeing as Avatar was nothing more than a vessel to show off all his new technology, (3D included) he can't really rip on a film like Piranha.
Yeah, when he makes something that's not scenery porn, I'll take his shots at use of 3-D seriously.

That gets me to thinking if I wasn't the only one who for the past two decades, upon hearing a movie had nudity, immediately and correctly determined that there was going to be only bare male ass featured.
Call me male (because I am), but I would like to see a renaissance of the boobs in movies. Lots of boobs.

It's funny he's talking about how Hollywood is going all crazy with the 3D, even though it's all his fault for bringing the craze back with Avatar.

The movie has 8 extra minutes of plot revealing movie that will, int he worlds of an Avatar supporter, "Tie up all loose ends of the movie, give you a more in depth look, and add to its fantastic story and plot that you cant understand becuase you see it as nothing moer then another 3D movie".

All I heard out of it is, "It is James Cameron's excuse to make more money so he can rival the mass and size of K2 (mount Everest) then burn it all to the ground and piss it out as he laughs at the poor who wish they could have that money."

Hmmm...I was going to come in here and defend Cameron's movies (even Titanic and Avatar), but I can see I'm clearly in the minority when it comes to the internet. Interesting how the most popular things are the most bashed, especially online.

That said, I happen to agree with Cameron only in the respect that I completely and utterly despise 3D films that simply use 3D as an excuse to throw shit at the audience. Say what you want about Avatar, but I'd say it's the first movie to date to really get 3D right.
