Japanese Fallout: New Vegas Ads Hate On JRPGs

A group of Japanese protesters anticipating Fallout: New Vegas aren't happy with the typical JRPG anymore.

JRPGs used to be king of the roost, and in sales some of them Fallout: New Vegas [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99276-Final-Fantasy-XIII-Is-the-Fastest-Selling-Final-Fantasy] in Japan, which questions why JRPGs have to be the way they sometimes are.

The ad features eight protesters holding signs questioning various typical aspects of Japanese RPGs, and boy do they look pissed. Translated by Andriasang [http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/08/04/fallout_protests/], one sign reads: "What's the point of playing again if there's no change to the story." Another angrily asks: "When did games become something that you watch?"

A third protester believes "a game where you just follow the scenario is like living life on rails," while a fourth says "it would be nice if the main character had a mission aside from just wiping out evil." All of these comments have direct ties to the gameplay and storyline of Final Fantasy XIII [http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-XIII-Playstation-3/dp/B000FQ2DTA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1280943427&sr=8-1], the latest entry in one of the world's most popular JRPG series that was released in Japan in December 2009 and everywhere else in March 2010.

The ad of course offers a solution to these woes by making sure everyone knows that Obsidian Entertainment's Fallout: New Vegas is coming out later this year (Nov. 4 in Japan, Oct. 19 in the U.S., Oct. 22 in Europe). New Vegas is an extension of the open-world, choice-filled gameplay Fallout has always been always known for, but that was recently expanded and brought back into public consciousness with Bethesda's Fallout 3 [http://www.amazon.com/Fallout-3-Game-Year-Xbox-360/dp/B001REZLY8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1280944174&sr=8-2]. The message here is clear: If you're sick of JRPGs, western RPGs that let you decide whether you want to annihilate mounds of super mutants or not are your solution.

Well, you don't complain that FPS's don't change there anything, why complain that JRPGs don't? At least they try. Not that I don't like fallout of course, but this is stupid.

The irony, of course, is that Fallout 3 at least didn't have much in the way of REAL choices.

Ha, ha, ha!

I think this might work for the Japanese sense of humour, I could be wrong, but they seem to like spite-filled sarcasm and parody.

i do love RPG's, both W and J, however they both are rife with problems. JRPG's have the problem that they are all virtually the same (with the exception of the Tales of games, but they are starting to look kind of genericy too) and Western RPG's have the problem that they are all trying to tell Lord of The Rings all over again. Sometimes with minorly varrying themes but only minorly.

No kidding. RPGs seem to be the ones pushing the envelope trying to evolve. Granted not every one is genius but at least they are trying.

I concur. Not only is it stupid, I think it is a bit depressing.

*Yawn* Companies are becoming professional trolls like yahtzee. No surprise there.

Yes i see the hardcore fans of jrpgs getting very upset over this.

Fallout 3 wasn't that great ill borrow or rent this before i make my final judgement to buy or not.

This looks pretty funny, if a tiny bit pointless.
It get's the attention of anyone who notices it, so it furfills its purpose.
