Right now, I have nine or so models on my desk here at the office, probably worth anywhere from $250 to $300, ballpark. And those are medium-quality kits, even.

The highest-quality model kits (like, say, this Perfect Grade Astray Red Frame [http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN958463], for example) can run you anywhere from $150 to $200
that doesn't look right, the medium kits are worth 250-300 while the high quality are only worth 150-200?

sorry, just looks odd
I meant all of them combined.

Envy! The MG Exia is a thing of beauty. I saw a goddamn beautiful 1/100 00-Raiser a few weeks back, though.

Huh, who knew?

Also 29 and that into his toys and living with mom? Come on now, although now i wish to play your "Super Arson Setting Master Ectasy" game... You think they can make it a series?
Actually the living with parents part isn't that strange in Japan. Japan doesn't attach the same stigma to living at home. In fact the whole living with friends thing isn't really done in Japan and their one bedroom apartments (called mansions in a case of rather ironic Engrish) are rather depressing. It's even perfectly normal for three generations to continue living in the same house.

The byzantine laws and exorbitant fees involved with renting a home, let alone buying one, means that the vast majority of the Japanese population, both otaku and non-, live with their parents until they get married, even beyond their 30's. They sometimes continue living with their parents after marriage, to take care of them in their old age.

...the moar you know, right?

EDIT: ...yeah, better read till the end of the thread next time.

Yeah, who'd have guessed a guy with a Haro avatar would like Gundam? ;)

Does anyone see what's wrong with this sentence? Lemme highlight it for you:
- 29 year old man.
- Lives with his mother
- Burns house over toys
Different culture. Considering housing prices there it's not terribly unusual.

Yeah, who'd have guessed a guy with a Haro avatar would like Gundam? ;)
It's all a clever ruse I'm sure.

Haro! Haro! Rakusu! Haro!

I don't play Japanese games for fear of becoming Japainsane.

Western games are damn good anyway.

Isn't he a little old to be watching Gundam, or living with his mother at that? I used to watch that show along with Dragon ball Z when I was like twelve. I find it pathetic that people seventeen plus still watch these cheesy kids shows.

Well when you worked in a factory for say, 12 years out of your life, and your pride and joy that you worked so hard for was just casually tossed away, I would be really fucking pissed to. That would be like my mom throwing away my whole video game collection because she felt that I was too old for it! I've got over a few thousand dollars in rare and import games and systems and I would be devestated if they were just thrown out.

I can understand his pain. The guy is a 29 year old factory worker who lives with his mom. I doubt he has much else besides his gundam figures. I blame his mom. She must have had some idea how important those figures were to her son before she threw them out.
Or maybe she was like:

"My son is 29, still lives with me, and plays with toys. F this noise!"
*picks up Gundam model*
"TRASHCANNED!"
*throws model away*

On the bright side, this is unlikely to be blamed on a videogame, for once. For all Japan has odd taste in games, I don't think they have Super Arson Setting Master Ecstasy ... yet.
Yeah, I can't believe they canceled the sequel to Arson Setting Master Bedazzlement either.

From what I've heard the much of the press over in Japan consider Otaku scapegoats a delicacy, the same way media in the US enjoy the refreshing taste of gaming moral panic.

Yeah because the one guy out of 127 million japanese could have shot himself instead of burned his house.

But no really. Is there a requirement that every thread like this have a "This is why X country is dumb" or "This is why I've lost faith in humanity".

That's more an open question to everyone really.

You are thinking too much like a resident from the united states, you have to take into consideration 2 things

1.- Japan in the MECA of young siucides
2.- they dont care that much about the "monetary" value of things as much as the "sentimental" value.
Fair enough, but I'm not American.
i know, thats why i said you are thinking like one (America being the #1 country of stupid lawsuits to try to rip off people or companies)
I have noticed that basically everyone going to college in the US is going for a business or law degree.

Very few people shooting for science or health anymore. Probably why we have a bunch of people bashing healthcare and an economy that is ailing. Too many people rolling need when they should have rolled greed.
