With turn based games it removes the skill factor turning the game into pie charts and graphs.

Harsh but true, turn takings should stay single player.
Yes, no skill required AT ALL [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess]
What does chess have to do with turn taking RPGs. You could bring up a game of High/Low because that is turn taking too, but all luck since its just flipping the top card of your stack.

Chess and turn based RPGs are actually very simular. They both require countering and being a step ahead of your opponents.

You said turn based games. Chess is a turn based game. Simple, no?

On the topic of turn-based RPGs not requiring skill, I fail to see how Fire Emblem, Mario RPG or Chrono Trigger entail any more of "pie charts and graphs", or luck, for that matter, than Diablo II, Neverwinter Nights or Oblivion.

Why is there no turn based MMO's? As far as I know FFXI isnt turn based. I think that turn based would be perfect for MMO's, tactics would get extremely advanced.
Second of all, why is there hardly any JRPG's on PC?
And third of all, what are some good pc/ps3/wii/360 turn-based JRPG's?
Also, whats with JRPGs and no customization?

And what are some good JRPGs for iphone? Turn based or not, I dont care.
JRPGs will most likely never proliferate because in Japan and much of Asia, people don't use computers for much of anything but boring shit like office work.

the reason? Component prices are through the roof. Consoles are cheaper, they come with an immediate standard that you know every person has such and such system specs, and many consoles like ps2 and ps3 even support keyboard (ps3 supports mouse too!)

They make one set of code for the platform they choose and that's about it. It isn't worth it for them to make a PC version. FFVII got one and it sold like shit.

FFXI is not, but it IS heavily based on teamwork and tactics. If you just run in there you WILL die.

I can't speak for PC or 360, but Wii has Fire Emblem.

PS3: Cross Edge, Ar Tonelico, Enchanted Arms

Upcoming PS3: White Knight Chronicles, 3d Dot Game Heroes, FFXIV

Hope this helps.

Actually it does have a free 14-day trial. If you go to their main site there's a link that explains all about it. Hop on Hades server, look me up. I'm a Black Mage by the name of Fobiov, been on the game 5 years now. Be happy to show you around.

Edit: If you don't have your Content ID, you're better off just getting the FFXI Ultimate collection. It's 20 bucks and contains every piece of content in every expansion in the last 7 years. Just released a few weeks ago, they do it annually.

Allright.. I think.. Can you buy the ultimate collection online without having to have it delivered? Hate waiting for games to come via mail.

Yeah, you should be able to grab it off Direct2Drive if iirc.

D&D is a turn based game, you know. I believe that Gary Gygax even said that he would still have made it turn based if the technology was there to make it real time.

I'm not sure turn based MMORPG's would be too engaging once every nerd figured out 'the system', the appeal of battling in real time is exactly the possibility of error. (The very thing that holds us back from winning) ain't that a kicker?

It's an interesting thought, one I'm sure has been considered, but that's the fatal flaw I can see.

Hm, isn't Atlantica online turn based? You even have some units which have different initative values and such. (Of course your turn has a timer, so you can't wait forever... but basically...)

1) Turn-based would be horrible for an MMO enviroment. There are multiple possibilites. The first is that you go up to a creature and engage it and the battle switches to a grid/hex/etc for the turn based gameplay. This would make it a single player experience or potential co-op, which makes no sense to run it in an MMO enviroment. The second is to have turn based whenever cyou enter "hotile" areas, this will get bogged down by farming zones and bosses, since everyone will be running trying to get the boss kill/mob xp all slowly in a TB fashion. TB relies upon its tactics being heavily developed before the game, particularly if this was thrown into an MMO enviroment. PvE = no real tactics required, just memorising a pattern. PvP = would simply involve you having hard counters + whoever gets first turn to spam the appropriate critcal move to minimise your participation in the fight.

2) No JRPGs on the PC? Well some have said its the market. I say its because PC gamers like western rpgs. PC Gamers are the closest to the table top gamers and hence share a passion to be able to make their own decisions when playing a ROLEPLAYING game. You know, they like to roleplay, if you prefer the JRPG method of simply worrying about the story (i use it very lightly in some cases) unfolding and simply crunching numbers rather than involving themselves in the story, they generally head to the plug in and play of consoles. PC gamers are used to making their own decisions, thats what a PC is good for and this translates to their games.

3) Personally good and JRPGs are rarely in the same sentence.

4)No custimization in JRPGs is simple, thats what they are about. Playing a JRPG is rarely about your individual choices, your always getting told what to do and blindly following it to progress. If you want custimization and choice you play a western RPG, no offense to those who like one or the other but thats the way things are.

Instances go against the idea spirit of MMOs as well but they have been adopted. Turn based combat needn't be any worse if it was done well enough. Combat systems in real time RPGs are already pretty messed up so switching to turn based wouldn't automatically fix or ruin that balance. Let's face it, a lot of people play MMOs by memorising a sequence of hotkeys and hammering the same sequence out for every fight.

I say its because PC gamers like western rpgs.
A lot of people playing games like WoW come from a background of playing Japanese console RPGs.

That depends on the title more than which country the game was made, in my experience.

1. I don't know, I like that idea, you should mail it to Squeenix.
2. Because the Japanese prefer consoles. Though I think Lost Odyssey and FF7 are on PC.
3. Well Final Fantasy 13 will be out soon enough, other than that I suggest you look into the Mario RPGs and if you can, buy a PS2 for cheap and pick up all the classics for cheap.
4. If you mean character customization it's because the characters are tailored to be memorable in visuals. However if you mean stat based I think every JRPG I played allowed me to mix and match.
5. I think Kingdom Hearts Coded is on the iPhone.

Well for pc I might have a suggestion, although it isn't a JRPG (cause it wasn't made in japan :p ) it does have turn based combat more or less identical to jrpgs and in general it more or less plays like one it's called Anachronox it is fairly old 2000 I think but if you don't mind the graphics which aren't exactly great by today's standard (although back then it looked gorgeous ) it is an absolute gem of a game, great concept, great story, briliant characters, good gameplay, fun, humorous, it is with out a doubt a really good game, it is sad that it was overlooked by most but it is more than worth a try

Disgaea 3 on PS3 is really good. Should last you a good few hundred hours too.
This was going to be my suggestion. The first two are brilliant, as well. Actually, pretty much anything published by NIS (mostly PS2 games) is great (and more likely than not, turn-based).
